PASTORAL STAFF EPIPHANY OF THE LORD READINGS: JANUARY 3, 2020 EQUIPO PASTORAL Today’s first reading is taken from the Isaiah 60:1-6 Book of Isaiah (3rd Isaiah, which was Psalm: 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-13 Rev. Angelo David, Pastor written shortly after the return from the Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 [email protected] x108 Babylonian Captivity or approximately Matthew 2:1-12 500 BC). This section emphasizes hope, Rev. Pedro Perez, Parochial Vicar joy, and the rise of the new Zion. It is important to note that not only the Jews will [email protected] x116 return to the New Jerusalem, but the Gentile kingdoms will also follow the light to the New Jerusalem. It also emphasizes that God is faithful to His promises, which is Antonieta Bustamante, Liturgy Coordinator the message that we have read throughout Advent, Christmas, and now the [email protected] x104 Epiphany. This particular section manifests or show’s God’s glory, which is the meaning of the word epiphany. Webster’s Dictionary describes epiphany as “an Jose Beck, Liturgical Musician (Youth) appearance or manifestation”. In Matthew’s Gospel, we read the time-honored story [email protected] x118 of the Magi, which is only recorded in Matthew’s Gospel. But who were these men and what was the star that they saw in the East? The Magi (from the Greek word FAITH FORMATION magoi) were believed to have belonged to a priestly caste of Zoroastrians, a very FORMACION DE FE ancient religion that survives even today. Zoroastrianism, Judaism, and Christianity have very similar beliefs, not the least of which is that they all believe in just one Yolanda Toulet, Faith Formation Director God. The Magi were also physicians who healed the sick and astrologers, but not in [email protected] x102 the modern sense of the term. Even though they did cast horoscopes, they were much more astronomers than astrologers. They were truly “Wise Men”. Now what was the star that they saw in the East? The word for star in Greek could mean an STAFF | PERSONAL individual star or a configuration of heavenly objects, which is what the Magi saw. On April 17th of 6 BC, the planet Jupiter (represented kingship) entered the Sharon Aeria, Parish Office Manager constellation Aries the Ram (represented the House of Israel in ancient times) in the [email protected] x117 East. To the Magi, that meant that a king had been born in Israel. However, Jupiter was partially eclipsed by the Moon which to the Magi meant that this was not an Tom Hess, Buildings & Grounds ordinary king but a divine and immortal king. That was what prompted the Magi to [email protected] x115 make the long journey (approximately two years) to Israel, where they found the child Jesus in Bethlehem. The Magi (Gentiles) announced the birth of the newborn King of the Jews and worshiped Him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. EMERGENCY PASTORAL CARE (Again, the epiphany or manifestation of the Son of God). The gifts themselves have Phone: 408-345-2445 a much deeper meaning. Gold represents a king; frankincense, a priest, and myrrh represents death. Frankincense and myrrh in those times were literally worth their weight in gold. These truly were fitting gifts for the Son of God. This fulfilled the EMERGENCY FOOD PANTRY prophecy from Isaiah that we read in the first reading. The journey of the Israelites DESPENSA DE EMERGENCIA from Babylon to Jerusalem is represented by the incarnation (birth of Jesus) and the Phone: 408-629-3030 x114 Gentiles coming to Jerusalem are represented by the Magi. The main theme of Matthew’s Gospel is to demonstrate that Jesus is the Messiah and that Jesus is the fulfillment of the prophecies regarding the Messiah.

Rinde homenaje. Amén.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? Catholic Life Explained

QUESTION: What is the difference between a chastisement and a punishment? ANSWER: The distinction between chastisement and punishment is, in many ways, a subtle one, but which is still relevant in our Catholic tradition. First, chas- tisement is a concept that is grounded in Sacred Scripture. Here, we see chastisement as a response by God to people’s actions that is intended to teach a lesson. As St. John Paul II observed, “chastisement appears to be … a kind of divine pedagogy, in which the last word is reserved to mercy: He scourges and then shows mercy, casts down to the depths of the nether world, and he brings up from the great abyss” (Tobit 13:2). The idea here is that in order to capture our attention or to highlight how we have not lived out our covenant-relationship with God as we should, there are times when God uses events in life to draw us back to the quality of relationship or faith that we should have. The concept of punishment, however, has a different sense. The Catechism of the Church observes that punishment is the con- sequence of a damaging action that “has the primary aim of redressing the disorder” and to protect the community and the common good from further damage or harm (see no. 2266). Although we always hope that someone who is being punished for a crime or some other harmful action will learn from their actions, punishment isn’t necessarily intended to teach a lesson in the same way that a chastisement is. Ultimately, how we make the distinction between chastisement and punishment is a matter of discernment. As with almost everything in life, our experiences can be an opportunity for grace — or for something less — depending on how open we are to recognizing the movement of God’s Spirit within them. © LPI EPIPHANY OF THE LORD La Epifanía del Señor Page 9

SHARING THE GOSPEL Jigsaw puzzles are fun. Solve a puzzle with your whole family, and it comes together even faster. God helped the wise men solve a puzzle. They wanted to find the newborn king. Together the wise men read God’s promises, did their homework, and followed the star. When all of their answers fit, they found baby Jesus. PRAYER God, thank you for all the people who helped me find Jesus. MISSION FOR THE WEEK Solve a puzzle together with your family. Work together like the wise men did.
