Thus, the monuments acquire their place in the final risk array, according to their heritage significance combined with current and potential threats. By working through texts by Gregory of Nyssa, this dissertation fills out what fittingness and gratuity entail—what, that is, they do for beauty-seekers and beauty-talkers. After the historical set-up of the first chapter, chapter 2 considers fittingness and gratuity through Gregory’s doctrine of God because Beauty, for Gregory, is a name for God. That God is radically transcendent transforms (radicalizes) fittingness and gratuity away from a strictly Platonic vision of how they might function. Chapter 3 extends such radicalization by considering beauty in light of Christology and particularly in light of the Christological claims to invisibility, poverty, and suffering.

Jackson School of International Studies ©Copyright 2021 Owen Harris University of Washington Abstract Hellenes and Arabs at Home and Abroad: Greek Orthodox Christians from Aleppo in Athens Owen Harris Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Kathie Friedman Jackson School of International Studies Abstract: In this thesis, I show how communities living together in relative equality in Aleppo, Syria, and fleeing the same conflict, experienced very different outcomes depending on which religious community they belonged to. Members of the Greek Orthodox Christian community from Aleppo who have moved to Athens reported that their new home is exactly the same as the community they left behind. Members of the Muslim community from Aleppo in Athens did not agree with this statement. Why do Greek Orthodox Christians fare so much better than their Muslim compatriots in Greece? I argue that this inequality is a result of opportunities and challenges created by policies instituted during the great unmixing of peoples in the early 20th century and the refugee crisis in the early 21st century. Greek Orthodox Christians are equal citizens in a secular Arab republic that values ecumenism and members of the Greek diaspora in a Hellenic republic that privileges Greek ethno-religious belonging. They are Arab Hellenes, equally Greek and Syrian. Drawing on data collected in interviews with members of the Greek Orthodox Syrian community in Greece, as well as Syrians of different faiths in other countries, I examine what went right for Greek Orthodox Syrians in Athens and suggest policy tools that government and civil society can use to create similar conditions for Muslim Syrians in Greece.

Faculty of Law University of Toronto 2011 This dissertation concerns a crucial episode in the international legal history of nation-building: the Greek-Turkish population exchange. Supported by Athens and Ankara, and implemented largely by the League of Nations, the population exchange showcased the new pragmatism of the post-1919 order, an increased willingness to adapt legal doctrine to local conditions. It also exemplified a new mode of non-military nation-building, one initially designed for sovereign but politico-economically weak states on the semi-periphery of the international legal order. The chief aim here, I argue, was not to organize plebiscites, channel self-determination claims, or install protective mechanisms for vulnerable minorities Ŕ all familiar features of the Allied Powers‟ management of imperial disintegration in central and eastern Europe after the First World War. Nor was the objective to restructure a given economy and society from top to bottom, generating an entirely new legal order in the process; this had often been the case with colonialism in Asia and Africa, and would characterize much of the mandates system ii throughout the interwar years. When he was denounced as a dangerous mischief-maker and brought before the tribunal of the Governor Lucian, he responded to his threats in these terms, ―You little know what is for my good and well-being. Nothing could be more pleasing to me than to suffer for Christ. So don’t hesitate to put my old body to the tortures you deem the worst, and you will learn that the power of my Christ cannot be overcome.‖ He was then stripped of his priestly robe by the tormentors, who tore his flesh with iron claws without being able to elicit a single cry of pain from him.

When we celebrate the joyous occasion of Holy Baptisms and Holy Chrismations, we all have an opportunity to reflect on the themes we encounter specifically in this Holy Sacrament. First in both we are faced with the reality that we like the newly Baptized and Chrismated have received the power and operation of the Grace of the Holy Spirit. It is this power which enables us to live faithful lives as disciples of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The same power that filled the Saints that we honor in our Holy Church, is the same power that lives in our lives. Let us reach out and allow the Holy Spirit to fill us so we also may accomplish great things in faithful as the local Body of Christ. Second, we encounter our Lord's command-in the Gospel Reading for Holy Baptism- to spread the message of the Good News. Making the Holy Spirit real and effective in our lives fills us with the great joy for our own salvation but also with a deep and joyful desire to share that same Good News to others. In so doing we are fulfilling our Lord's command to share the Gospel message of Grace and Salvation.

By Meg Hunter-Kilmer ith many parents choosing to home- school their children for the first time this year (and plenty more continuing W after years of educating their children at home), homeschooling families around the world would do well to look to the saints who’ve gone before. Though none of them had to deal with online learning or an abundance of curricula to choose from, all of these homeschooling and homeschooled saints are models of how to grow in holiness while learning (and teaching) at home. St. Emilia of Caesarea (d. 375) is known as the Mother of Saints. Among her 10 children are three bishops (one a Doctor of the Church) and a total of six saints. And while her sons eventually left home and went off to school, Emilia and her mother-in-law St. Macrina the Elder taught them all at home in their youth, with Emilia’s oldest daughter (St. Macrina the Younger) helping out with the little ones. This was the intellectual foundation of Sts. Basil the Great and Gregory of Nyssa. As in many large homeschooling families, the siblings learned nearly as much from each other as they did from their parents, and both Basil and Gregory considered their older sister Macrina enormously influen- tial on their intellectual and spiritual formation.

    Population Exchange and the Politics of Ethno-Religious Fear: the EU-Turkey Agreement on Syrian Refugees in Historical Perspective Gregory J. Goalwin Department of Sociology, University of California, Santa Barbara Santa Barbara, CA, U.S.A. Abstract: In March of 2016 the EU and Turkey reached an agreement in which all refugees who reach Greece through unauthorized means would be returned to Turkey. The deal is the latest effort to ‘stem the tide’ of refugees who have fled the Middle East. Yet this is not the first time negotiations between Europe and Turkey have resulted in an agreement to exchange problematic populations. As part of the negotiations ending WWI, Turkey and Europe agreed to a transfer of populations in which Christians in Turkey would be sent to Greece in exchange for Greece’s small population of Muslims. This project draws upon historical research and contemporary policy analysis to compare the 2016 EU-Turkey Refugee Agreement and the 1923 Greco- Turkish population exchange. Vladimir Cvetković SEX, GENDER AND CHRISTIAN IDENTITY IN THE PATRISTIC ERA1 ABSTRACT KEYWORDS Focusing on three historical examples of a different understanding of gender, sex, Christian Christian identity, the paper seeks to address the role of contemporary identity, martyrdom, concepts of sex and gender in the creation of Christian identity. In the virginity, ecstasy, love, first case study, focused on the literary representations of the Christian marriage. martyrdom from the second and third centuries, special emphasis is placed on the demand for the ‘manly’ or ‘masculine’ way of witnessing faith. The second historical example relates to the creation of a wider ascetic movement in the fourth-century Asia Minor, and its specific focus is on Macrina the Younger. In her Vita, Gregory of Nyssa distinguishes between Macrina’s gender identity based on her virginity on the one hand, and her social role as a widow, and ‘mother’ and ‘father’ of her monastic community on the other. Finally, the focus is shifted towards Dionysius the Areopagite and Maximus the Confessor, whose teachings about ecstasy, as a way to transcend oneself in the movement towards the loved one, provide the basis for establishing a theology of marriage and creating a Christian identity based not on sexual or gender roles, but on the uniqueness of human nature.

It follows primarily demographic, social, and cultural aspects of the emigre group that was closely linked to the Communist Party of Greece. In particular, it pursues the issue of the forming of emigre identity in the era of De-Stalinisation. The article is concerned with social develop- ments in the emigre group and their gradual integration into the Czechoslovak society of the 1960s. It pursues the complicated process of building a new identity, the national and linguistic structure of the emigre group, its standard of living and employment, their educational system, the process of the formation of their own intelligentsia, and generation issues. Individual topics are examined on a socio-cultural level in the context of political developments in Czechoslovakia and Greece.
