This Installation Explores the Final Girl Trope. Final Girls Are Used in Horror Movies, Most Commonly Within the Slasher Subgenre
This installation explores the final girl trope. Final girls are used in horror movies, most commonly within the slasher subgenre. The final girl archetype refers to a single surviving female after a murderer kills off the other significant characters. In my research, I focused on the five most iconic final girls, Sally Hardesty from A Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Laurie Strode from Halloween, Ellen Ripley from Alien, Nancy Thompson from A Nightmare on Elm Street and Sidney Prescott from Scream. These characters are the epitome of the archetype and with each girl, the trope evolved further into a multilayered social commentary. While the four girls following Sally added to the power of the trope, the significant majority of subsequent reproductions featured surface level final girls which took value away from the archetype as a whole. As a commentary on this devolution, I altered the plates five times, distorting the image more and more, with the fifth print being almost unrecognizable, in the same way that final girls have become. Chloe S. New Jersey Blood, Tits, and Screams: The Final Girl And Gender In Slasher Films Chloe S. Many critics would credit Hitchcock’s 1960 film Psycho with creating the genre but the golden age of slasher films did not occur until the 70s and the 80s1. As slasher movies became ubiquitous within teen movie culture, film critics began questioning why audiences, specifically young ones, would seek out the high levels of violence that characterized the genre.2 The taboo nature of violence sparked a powerful debate amongst film critics3, but the most popular, and arguably the most interesting explanation was that slasher movies gave the audience something that no other genre was able to offer: the satisfaction of unconscious psychological forces that we must repress in order to “function ‘properly’ in society”. -

Trauma and Agency in the Remake of a Nightmare on Elm Street
Este é um artigo publicado em acesso aberto (Open Access) sob a licença Creative article Commons Attribution, que permite uso, distribuição e reprodução em qualquer meio, sem restrições desde que o trabalho original seja corretamente citado. “Nightmare is over”: Trauma and Agency in the Remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street Rosana Ruas Machado GomesI https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1104-0863 I - Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Porto Alegre (RS). Brasil. Abstract: The 2010 remake of the horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street focuses on the earthly abuses committed by the now confirmed pedophile Freddy Krueger. The fact that the victims of Krueger’s sexual assaults start get- ting murdered in their sleep is relevant to the trauma studies, as nightmares are one of the most common symptoms observed in people diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Therefore, one of the goals of this paper is to analyze the ways in which trauma is portrayed in the movie. Considering that the teenagers can only overcome Krueger — and therefore, their trauma — once they are able to witness the terrible events of their past, this work also aims at observing and discussing the trajectory that allows the protagonists to survive. In order to meet these goals, some central concepts to trauma theory are presented and discussed in relation to their portrayal in the film. The analysis shows that the main character Nancy can only defeat Krueger once she knows everything that has happened in the past and is able to have agency in the story. Keywords: audiovisual; A Nightmare on Elm Street; horror; trauma. -

A literature review for slasher ilm theory precedes a detailed analysis of the symbolic and thematic connections between the opening and closing sequences in each ilm. he conclusion highlights the remake’s resigniication of the original movie’s Gothic legacy by updating its supernatural monster into an earthly threat and by endowing its heroine with the strength and proactivity necessary for the inal confrontation with the monster. -

Blaze has been defeated; The forces of Earthrealm, Outworld, and Netherrealm have been slaughtered. Only Raiden and Shao Kahn remain. Before Raiden could be struck down, he used the power of his amulet to send a message to his past self- changing the future. In the past, the tournament that will decide the fate of Earthrealm is about to begin. Raiden will receive a message from his future self when it starts; “He must win.” The deadliest forces in Mortal Kombat history are ready to test their might. Whose side are you on? Take +1000 KP (Kombat Points) to prepare yourself for Kombat. Timeline The events described above have (mostly) reset the Mortal Kombat timeline; by default, you will start out a few days before the next Mortal Kombat tournament on Shang Tsung’s island. Though there are a few fighters in the tournament that are here for their own reasons, the two main sides belong to Outworld and Earthrealm. Outworld has won the Mortal Kombat tournament nine times now, thanks to their champion; the mighty Goro. If they win again, their emperor, Shao Kahn, will have free reign to add Earthrealm to his empire. If the timeline goes unchanged from here, Liu Kang will defeat Goro in the tournament. Afterwards, Shao Kahn will announce a new tournament in Outworld- with the prize for Earthrealm being the relinquishment of his claim to Earthrealm, forever. Liu Kang and Kung Lao will win the tournament, however Shao Kahn will murder Kung Lao and invade Earthrealm anyways with the help of Quan Chi, a Netherrealm demon, in an attempt to merge Outworld and Earthrealm together using the souls of fallen Earthrealmers as a catalyst. -

Bad Boys and Final Girls: Fleshing Out Gender in Slasher and Horror Media Brandon Bosch When it comes to the slasher genre, typically only three types of people matter: the Slasher Villain, the Victims, and the Final Girl. Today I want to talk about how gender is often represented with these characters. Slasher villains-like many media villains-are often lacking in masculinity. We have characters like Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th), Leatherface (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Michael Myers (Halloween), and Norman Bates (Psycho) that are shown as being childlike and/or obsessed with family members (especially moms). We also see horror villains (not just slasher) having makeup (e.g., Leatherface, Texas Chainsaw Massacre; Pennywise, It), doll avatars (e.g., Child's Play, Saw), and speaking softly (e.g., NOlman Bates, Psycho; Hannibal Leete!', Silence ofthe Lambs). -
Costume Ideas: the 30 Creepiest Characters in TV and Film
Costume Ideas: The 30 Creepiest Characters in TV and Film From Pennywise to Po. BY HANNAH ONGLEY Haven't picked out a costume for this weekend? Just go as Pennywise the Clown. According to this sorta-kinda official list of America's creepiest characters from film and television, the case for a timeless look is just as strong at Halloween as it is any other time of the year. E-Score, the nation's leading character-research service, asked 1,500 consumers across different income, age, education, and geographic demographics to determine the creepiest inhabitants of America's small and big screen. It then sorted the characters by the percentage of people who Freddie Highmore as Norman Bates in Bates Motel rated them as "creepy." NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images While the 15 creepiest film characters are all pretty objectively terrifying, the television choices are slightly more controversial. Mr. Burns creepier than the Teletubbies? Clearly these people have never seen the latter in black-and- white. Anyway, here are your top picks, America: Creepiest Film Characters Creepiest TV Characters 1. Pennywise the Clown (Stephen King's It) 80% 1. Norman Bates 66% 2. Annabelle the Doll (The Conjuring) 77% 2. Dr. Hannibal Lecter 60% 3. Norman Bates (Psycho) 73% 3. Oswald Cobblepot (Gotham) 58% 4. Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Silence of the Lambs) 72% 4. Mr. Burns (The Simpsons) 53% 5. Chucky (Child's Play) 70% 5. The Governor (The Walking Dead) 49% 6. Leatherface (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) 70% 6. Norma Bates 47% 7. Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th) 68% 7.
