    Snow and low temperatures, December 2010 From late November to Boxing Day 2010 the UK experienced two spells of severe winter weather with very low temperatures and significant snowfalls. The first of these spells lasted for two weeks from Thursday 25 November to Thursday 9 December and saw persistent easterly or north-easterly winds bringing bitterly cold air from northern Europe and Siberia, accompanied by snow. Eastern Scotland and north-east England saw the most persistent and heaviest snow, which accumulated to depths of 50 cm or more across the higher ground by the end of the spell. However, lower lying areas were also affected and the snow increasingly spread to other parts of the UK, so that by early December many areas of the UK were under lying snow. Temperatures struggled to rise above freezing during the day and there were very severe frosts at night. Temperatures widely fell below -10 °C on several nights and on occasion below -20 °C in northern Scotland. This spell of snow and freezing temperatures occurred unusually early in the winter, with the snowfalls judged as the most significant and widespread in late November and early December since late November 1965. The period from 9 to 15 December saw milder and quieter conditions with a gradual thaw of lying snow. However, a second spell of severe weather began on Thursday 16 December as very cold Arctic air pushed down across the UK from the north. Snow showers affected the north and west on Friday 17 December, while there was heavier snow across southern England and Wales on Saturday 18 December.

    ‘NORTHERN GODS IN MARBLE’ The Romantic Rediscovery Marble of Norse Mythology [ KNUT LJØGODT ABSTRACT The Norse myths were rediscovered in the late 18th century, and became important to contemporary culture during the first half of the 19th century. The Romantics discussed the usage of themes from Norse mythology; soon, these themes became widespread in art and literature. Their popularity is closely connected with the national ideals and political situations of the period, but they were often given individual artistic interpretations. The ] Romantic interest in Norse myths and heroes held sway over artists and writers throughout the 19th century. KEYWORDS Norse myths, Norse heroes, pagan religion, Knud Baade, Romanticism vs Classicism. Introduction Karen Blixen’s short story ‘Sorrow-Acre’, published in Winter’s Tales (1942) takes place at a Danish country estate in the late 18th century. During a conversation between the baron and his nephew, they discuss Classical versus Norse mythol- ogy. The young man has discovered the Norse myths through a recently pub- lished work: ‘He mentioned the name of the author, Johannes Ewald, and recited a couple of the elevated verses.’ The book he refers to is Ewald’s play The Death of Balder (1775). He goes on to praise the Norse gods: ‘And I have wondered, while I read,’ he went on after a pause, still moved by the lines he himself had declaimed, ‘that we have not till now understood how much our Nordic my- thology in moral greatness surpasses that of Greece and Rome. If it had not been for the physical beauty of the ancient gods, which have come down to us in marble, no modern mind could hold them worthy of worship.

Schuler 2011 ABSTRACT This dissertation advances an account of how the genre of the chronicle history play enacts conciliar rule, by reflecting Renaissance models of counsel that predominated in Tudor political theory. As the texts of Renaissance political theorists and pamphleteers demonstrate, writers did not believe that kings and queens ruled by themselves, but that counsel was required to ensure that the monarch ruled virtuously and kept ties to the actual conditions of the people. Yet, within these writings, counsel was not a singular concept, and the work of historians such as John Guy, Patrick Collinson, and Ann McLaren shows that “counsel” referred to numerous paradigms and traditions. These theories of counsel were influenced by a variety of intellectual movements including humanist-classical formulations of monarchy, constitutionalism, and constructions of a “mixed monarchy” or a corporate body politic. Because the rhetoric of counsel was embedded in the language that men and women used to discuss politics, I argue that the plays perform a kind of cultural work, usually reserved for literature, that reflects, heightens, and critiques political life and the issues surrounding conceptions of conciliar rule.

    Intermediate Football Restructure Background One of the long-term objectives within the Irish FA’s 5-year strategy 2017-2022 is to reinvigorate the everyday game. Specifically, within this objective is a proposal for the restructure of Intermediate Football. The restructure aims to raise standards and continue the development of the game at Intermediate level by seeking to improve the standard of football on the pitch, introducing a more standardised league format and enhancing the quality of facilities/spectator experience. Senior Football 12 NIFL Premiership Intermediate Football 12 NIFL Championship 12 Premier Intermediate League via playoffs Northern Ireland General Intermediate Football Intermediate Intermediate A – 14 NAFL League Ballymena & Approx. 117 teams (excluding Premier – 14 Provincial Football NIFL Premiership reserve Intermediate B - 12 8 League teams) 1A – 14; 1B – 14; 15 1C - 14 Mapping of current Intermediate Football Clubs in Northern Ireland Mapping illustrates very heavy concentration of Intermediate clubs in Greater Belfast/ East of province, various colours represent current intermediate league they play in. Preferred Future Structure The preferred future structure provides for a better geographical split of clubs whilst limiting travel to regional opposition and standardising league formats. The future structure is assumed to sit on top of the existing Junior leagues structure. Region A – North/ North West Region B – Greater Belfast/ East Region C – South/ South East League Management A tender process is to be carried out to confirm league operators for each of the 3 regions. It is assumed that NIFL will continue to operate the Premier Intermediate League (National Intermediate League). However, if this is not the case then the National Intermediate League will be included in the tender process.
