Nel corso della storia spesso questa manifestazione ha dato grandi sorprese, su tutte la fiaba della Danimarca nel 1992 o quella della Grecia nel 2004. Alcune volte questa competizione è stata anche una sorta di palestra per abituarsi a vincere, facendo da prologo alla vittoria al campionato del mondo, qui possiamo ricordare la Germania Ovest del 1972, poi mondiale nel 1974, la Spagna vincitrice nel 2008 e nel 2012, unica nazionale a vincere due edizioni consecutive, oltre al mondiale sud africano del 2010.
