The best ROMs for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 [Video] We all know that what sets the Android OS apart from its competition is its open-source nature which gives us the ability to customize and tweak the interface to suit our own needs. Of course, the ability to create such “custom ROMs” requires a certain level of technical expertise which a lot of everyday users don’t have. Specialized teams of developers have been working hard to build such ROMs, that not only replace the existing interface your device features, but in most cases also enhance the overall performance of the device. One of our very own here at Android Authority, Sam Cater, wrote a wonderful article explaining what exactly a custom ROM entails, so I won’t be getting into that here. What I am hoping to do today is provide a list of, what we think, are some of the better custom ROMs for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. The selection of the Top 6 ROMs that we have chosen are based on set criteria that I believe are everyone’s requirements when looking for a custom ROM, including: Speed Functionality User Interface Ease of Installation Bug/glitch free. Overcome ROM V2.3. If you are one of those users that crave a stock Android experience, this is the ROM for you. The features of the Overcome ROM include. A complete stock Android experience with the fonts, soft-keys, and icons of the original Honeycomb OS Android Open-Source Project(AOSP) Glass tile transitions Settings still have a TouchWiz theme, but is the only place that you will find TouchWiz on this ROM. Apps include My Files, Google Play Store, Play Music, SwitchMe profile manager, and other apps found on a stock tablet. Upgraded launcher BusyBox installed for all your rooted apps Running Honeycomb 3.2 Upgraded power menu options add Reboot, Recovery, and Download to the standard Silent Mode, Flight Mode, and Power Off. Clean UI with no lag, bugs, or glitches. If this is the ROM you are looking for, you can find download and installation instructions here. Clean ROM v1.3. As the name suggests, this is a “Clean” version of the TouchWiz UI, removing all Samsung bloatware. The features of this ROM include: TouchWiz overlay – Includes Task Manager, Calendar, World Clock, and Calculator in the dock bar. TouchWiz icons and settings menu toggles. Android 3.2 Honeycomb Pershoot’s kernel allows you to overclock your device to up to 1.4 Ghz. Antutu CPU Master included. Unfortunately, we have been unable to run this app as it continuously force-closes, hence we use SetCPU. Apps include all the Google Play apps, QuickOffice HD, File Manager HD, and SuperUser. Fast reboot capability No lag, fast transitions, and bug-free. If you prefer TouchWiz UI without all those Samsung bloatware apps, this really fast ROM is the choice for you. You can find download and installation instructions here. Bindroid v3.4. With XDA members as the lead developers of this ROM, the expectations from the ROM are quite high. And it does not disappoint. Features of this ROM include: Impressive lockscreen May seem bloated, with the home-screens loaded with stock Galaxy Tab widgets right from setup All the icons, toggles, notifications, softkeys, TouchWiz launcher, and Settings menu are themed. Android Honeycomb 3.2 with a native Bindroid kernel Native kernel allows you to overclock the device up to 1.4 Ghz. (using SetCPU) Apps list features “Ad-free”, which removes all possible ads from the Android system. Other apps include ES File Explorer, Samsung Music Hub, and Polaris Office. Even with all the widgets on screen, there is no lag, and very speedy transitions. Customized power menu with Reboot, Recovery mode, and Download mode. This might be too gaudy for some, but if you are looking for a completely customized UI with easy access to apps and widgets, this is the ROM for you. You can find download and installation instructions here. GalaxyTask ROM v14. This is another custom ROM that, with the exception of a few tweaks, is TouchWiz reminiscent. Important point to note with this ROM include: TouchWiz overlay with a standard status bar and notifications and toggle menu. There a few bugs and glitches which you need to watch out for. Host of apps pre-installed including Photobrowser, Photo Editor, and HideBar(which hides the status bar). There are some issues with the functionality of the HideBar app though, as seen in the video below. It can be overclocked using the Pershoot’s kernel, but does not come with it, so you are stuck at the 1Ghz level. Android Honeycomb 3.2 No Samsung bloatware No lag and speedy transitions. This ROM does have a few kinks that need to be worked out, but with more updates, it should be a viable alternative to the above two choices. You can find download and installation instructions here. Blazar ROM. This ROM is for users looking to move back to Android Honeycomb 3.1 experience. Features of this ROM include: This ROM is strictly AOSP with no custom themes, and is a return to the “classic” Android 3.1 experience Classic menus Increased brightness Not TouchWiz inspired Android Honeycomb 3.1 Allows you to overclock stably up to a whopping 1.6 Ghz (done using SetCPU) with no over- heating.

  • Living Without Google on Android
Alternative for Google Apps on Android - living without Google on Android Android without any Google App? What to use instead of Hangouts, Map, Gmail? Is that even possible? And why would anyone want to live without Google? I've been using a lot of different custom ROMs on my devices, so far the two best: plain Cyanogenmod 11 snapshot on the Nexus 4[^1], and MIUI 2.3.2 on the HTC Desire G7[^2]. All the others ( MUIU 5, MIUI 6 unofficial, AOKP, Kaos, Slim, etc ) were either ugly, unusable, too strange or exceptionally problematic on battery life. For a long time, the first step for me was to install the Google Apps, gapps packages for Plays Store, Maps, and so on, but lately they require so much rights on the phone that I started to have a bad taste about them. Then I started to look for alternatives. 1 of 5 So, what to replace with what? Play Store I've been using F-Droid[^3] as my primary app store for a while now, but since it's strictly Free Software[^4] store only, sometimes there's just no app present for your needs; aptoide[^5] comes very handy in that cases. Hangouts I never liked Hangouts since the move from Gtalk although for a little while it was exceptional for video - I guess it ended when the mass started to use it in replacement of Skype and its recent suckyness. For chat only, check out: ChatSecure[^6], Conversations[^7] or Xabber[^8]. All of them is good for Gtalk-like, oldschool client and though Facebook can be configured as XMPP as well, I'd recommend Xabber for that, the other two is a bit flaky with Facebook.

  • 1Understanding Android
1 Understanding Android In mobile device terms, the word Android can refer to either an Android device or to the Android operating system. In very simple terms, an Android device is any device that runs the Android operat- ing system. You might also encounter androids from science fiction films and books, which are robots that resemble people, but that’s not the type of Android I discuss in this book. You don’t need to understand what Android is or how it works to use it. You can simply turn your device on and start pressing buttons and tapping icons and you’ll probably get along just fine. That approach worked just fine for my 3-year-old daughter; she figured it out pretty quickly, much to my dismay. But in case you want a small peek behind the Android curtain, this chapter is for you . Introducing the Android Operating System Android is the operating system that powers all Android devices. Much like how the Windows operating system powers laptop and desktop computers, or Apple’s iOS (formerly known as the iPhone OS) powers iPhones and iPads. Think of it as the underlying software that instructs your device what to do. When you install an Android app onto an Android device, you are installing an app that was written spe- cifically for the Android operating system. You can’t install a Windows app on an Android device, and you can’t install an Android app onto a Windows computer. Actually, that last part isn’t exactly true. You actually can install Android apps onto a Windows computer — and even on Macs and Linux PCs, for that matter — but only if the computer is running a special piece of software called an Android emulator, which creates a virtual Android device on your computer.

LEXICAL BORROWINGS IN THE COLOMBIAN ONLINE NEWSPAPER EL TIEMPO FROM 1990 TO 2012 by LORENA GÓMEZ MICHAEL PICONE, COMMITTEE CHAIR ERIN O’ROURKE ALICIA CIPRIA DILIN LIU DOUGLAS LIGHTFOOT A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the department of Modern Languages and Classics in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2012 Copyright Lorena Gómez 2012 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This study examined the introduction, adaptation, usage, and acceptance of lexical borrowings in the Colombian online newspaper El Tiempo from 1990 to 2012. While building on the foundation of prior research of sociolinguistic orientation on languages in contact, this study also included innovative approaches: the texts analyzed incorporate not only articles by El Tiempo journalists, but also the comments of bloggers linked to the newspaper’s site; online interviews were conducted with journalists and bloggers alike in an effort to determine their attitudes and motivations in relation to their vocabulary choices; and pronunciation patterns in relation to borrowed words were analyzed in videos from ET Canal El Tiempo. Contrary to the research questions posited at the outset, differences between the language of professional journalists and the language of the at-large bloggers proved to be minimal. The research found that there was a prescriptive tendency among journalists and bloggers alike to look for linguistic correctness and that their linguistic decisions were highly influenced by the guidelines from the Real Academia de la Lengua (RAE). When tracking and analyzing the different lexical choices and their relative frequencies in the writing of these two groups, no definite pattern surfaced, but only weak tendencies.

  • Good Technology Device Activations Report
Good Technology Device Activations Report Q1 2011 Verizon iPhone 4 Launch Boosts iPhone Enterprise Adoption, Tablet Momentum Continues Page 1 Copyright 2011 Good Technology Executive Summary In Good Technology’s Q1 2011 metrics report, we take a look at the mobile devices activated by Good Technology’s enterprise customers over the first quarter of 2011. Much noise has been made about Android’s overall smartphone market share growth and we still expect Android smartphone activations by Good’s customers to overtake iPhone activations over the course of 2011; however, it’s clear that Verizon’s launch of the iPhone 4 and AT&T’s subsequent iPhone 3GS price reduction significantly boosted overall iPhone activations by Good’s customers in Q1. Apple’s move to allow Verizon to carry its iPhone 4 resulted in the highest rate of activation (16.9 percent) for any new device since Good Technology has been publicly tracking and publishing reports (since calendar Q3 2010). Tablet activations remained strong in Q1, ranging between 18 percent and 23 percent of all device activations. This was driven by continued adoption of the original iPad and the release of the new iPad 2 in March. February’s dip in iPad activations can be attributed to the anticipated availability of the iPad 2, which became available for purchase on March 11. Motorola Xoom was the most popular Android tablet, breaking through with more than 1 one percent of all activations for the first time ever. Calendar Q2 should shed more light on tablet market trends given that iPad 2 and Xoom were launched late in Q1 and many more tablets based on the latest Android Honeycomb OS are expected to launch throughout Q2.
