I LARPing N Most of you may be wondering, what is “Larping”? The word LARP actually means: Live Action Role-Playing. This is essentially a real life version of the game World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy. The players range from elves to humans. T Each player then gets to pick out his or her class, this consists of: fighter, mage, thief, or monk (or even a mixture of classes). The player (if they are a mage) can use magic and weapons (non lethal of course). After choosing your class, larpers band into differ- O ent kingdoms or countries. Then gather together to venture on their quest to conquer the king- dom. This game is played all throughout our country the world by real life everyday people. This is a game that is on the rise and has even made an appearance in multiple movies such as, “Role Mod- els.” Alex Apgar (one of our writers) is a current larper, he claims to be a level 10 mage, so even I our own Trojans are capable of participating. So what are you waiting for? Get out and LARP! - Alex Apgar and Kyle Keszei T Let’s Get Fit! The warmer the weather the more options you have to get out and hang with your friends. Most people like to sit on their couch and do nothing but watch TV or Netflex, but not this summer! Being fit is one of America’s biggest problems, with so many food options the bad food is always the first choice. First step to getting in shape is stop drinking pop, pop kills your teeth and depending on how much you drink once you stop you can lose up to 20 pounds easy! Water is always an option and it’s healthy, Getting outside and going for a hike or jog is good exercise and you’ll get sun but don’t forget your sun screen. Instead of fast food go home cut some fruit and vegetables up, they are low in calories and healthy with vitamin’s depending on what you eat. If you don’t like healthy food then just cut down on what you eat; eat smaller pro- portions and spread them out. Always eat a good breakfast and exercise at least three times a week. Get out and live life— get fit! T H E T O R C H -Tiffany Montgomery P A G E VOLUME XIII, ISSUE IX Great Ways to get a Great Glow!

As the weather begins to grow warmer and the days go by faster we are faced with the beginning stages of summer. Once this beloved season has come, the days inside will be no longer. Everyone will want to be rid of their pasty white skin and welcome a new glowing tan. In case you missed the memo, tanning is bad for you, though it does have its benefits to your skin, such as vitamin D, overall it isn’t healthy. Exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun or tanning beds, not only increases your risk of skin cancer, but it also ages your skin dramatically. If you still want to look golden for the sum- mer, here are a few safe methods of doing so. Instead of spray tans try a safer technique, such as tanning lotion. Within the lotion that includes an ingredient called di- hydroxyacetone, or DHA, which dyes the skin and provides a healthier looking glow. This method has been researched and has been proved safe for manual and external use, only. When doing this technique don’t forget to exfoliate your skin, mak- ing sure that it is smooth before the application of the tanning lotion. If you do decide to lie out in the sun, make sure you apply sunscreen. When deciding on which types of sunscreen to ap- ply look at the labels carefully. Sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are better at blocking UV lights, and providing a longer application time for water sports. Though these sunscreens stay on longer, it still needs to be reapplied regularly. Reducing the amount of time actually spent in the sun is the best way to keep your skin safe. Yes it’s tempting to stay out longer, creating a more noticeable tan. However the more dangerous and stronger UV rays are present from 10am- 4pm. Staying in the shade as much as possible during that time is a must, even if clouds are present, 80% of the sun’s UV rays can get through the clouds. Dressing for the function is a smart idea, especially for your skin. Wearing the new trend may look cool, but the feeling of burnt skin won’t. It’s important to wear clothes that protect your body, it might not look as cute as another article of clothing, but you won’t have peeling skin. -Sydney Geier

A YEAR IN REVIEW—CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Everyone enjoys getting off school in the winter, who doesn’t love to sleep in and go sledding when there is tons of snow outside? This year the freezing weather and snow certainly gave us a ton of calamity days this year. We had so many calamity days that the district had to issue us more and the school board enforced a new way to make up the assignments and lessons that we missed. Blizzard Bags were a hassle on both the students and the teachers, and it was a definite shock for Glen Este to actually have to use them. There were lots of set backs due to all the snow days we received, but in the end at least we’ll be prepared for next year if we have another harsh winter! This year was certainly full of memories, good, bad, or just plain embarrass- ing memories. Whether or not you danced the night away at Homecoming, got your electronic privileges taken away, had water fall on you due to our faulty ceiling panels, or had your grades slightly tank because of the amount of blizzard bags you had to do for all of your classes-- you’ll definitely remember all of it for years to come! -Sasha Geier P A G E Senior’s Favorite Memories... THE FIRST WITCH

In the year 1692, Bridget Bishop was the first person to be accused of being a witch and hanged for witchcraft. In the course of Bishop’s life, she had had three husbands. The first two died during their marriage, which was used against her in the court saying that she had used witchcraft to make them sick so they died and she could move on to the next one. Back in those days, it was absurd to even think of a woman getting remarried. Bishop was the town show. She was always giving the townsfolk something to talk about. For instance, she was always getting in fist fights with her first two husbands in the town hall.

A few of the women in the town were not fond of Bishop because she was a flirt and their husbands lusted after her. The women went to the court and made a complaint about Bridget Bishop being a witch and using the devils magic to compel them into seizures and made their insides hurt. The courts brought her in and questioned her. She was found guilty of witch- craft. Within a ten day time period, she was tried and found guilty and hanged. This was the beginning of the Salem Witch Trials. The Salem Witch Trials lasted less than a year, with 19 recorded hangings of accused witches. Those days have long past us by but at least we do not forget where it all started! -Jessica Bratton Charles Lindbergh Charles Lindbergh was a American aviator and in 1927 made the very first non-stop solo flight from New York across the Atlantic Ocean to Paris. Also while he was engaging in his feet, his son got kidnapped in the process. Lindbergh’s flight was so dangerous because every pilot who tried crash their planes and killed themselves. But every pilot before him had bigger planes with more people in them. Charles didn’t and this work to his advantage by making the aircraft lighter. Also Lindbergh made modifications to his plane by stripping the radio out to reduce weighted, adding a lot more gas tanks even in the windshield which added up to 450 gallons, this is why his plane gets the nickname” Flying Gas Tank,” Also, Lindbergh had to put his head around the cockpit just to see where he was happening, he took out brakes and parachutes to lose more weight. Lindbergh didn’t have a way to call for help, a safety chute, and no way of stopping! Lindbergh was the Evil Kenevilof his time. The flying gas tank was the plane of its time with weighing 2700 pounds, pushing 225 horse power from its radial engine and it had a 45 feet wingspan that got 10 miles to the gallon with a range of 4200 miles. Other planes weighed roughly 1800 pounds with a gas tank that holded only 56 gallons of gas.

Once Lindbergh made the flight across the Atlantic to a field in Paris he became a ultra-famous celebrity with huge headlines, newspapers, books, and even a movie about him. Charles Lindbergh also got a job to fly for the first air mail service called “Air Mail” which he worked for until he retired. Aviation would never be the same without Charles L Lindbergh. -Zac Rodenberg P A G E SENIOR SPOTLIGHTS s Karisa Martino Chelsea Doebereiner -At GE I didn’t feel academically chal- Glen Este has been off and on good. Our society is truly living in the future. Many things that we once considered outlandish dreams are becoming our reality daily. When we hear “future” it conjures images of holograms and flying cars. Those things are now in development and will be consumer products in our lifetime.

Do you recall the old spy movies where the spy would carry a tool on his wrist that had all kinds of hidden gadgets. Unfortu- nately, the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2™ does not fire lasers... yet... however it does wirelessly manage many functions of your phone such as the taking pictures, answering calls, and yes, it tells time. It wirelessly syncs to your compatible Samsung device from your pocket so that texts and calls come directly to it.

Perhaps even more impressive is the flying car. This fantasy is now closer than ever to reality. I'm not talking about hover- cars, those have been done and, while functional, weren't exactly a success. However, top scientists have now made a break- through in flying car technology. The idea is that when you want something to fly, give it wings. And just like that, I give you the Terrafugia Transition. Currently, it is still in development and awaiting certification from the National Highway Traffic Safe- ty Administration. While it is not expected in the next year, it has been shown off a couple of times. There are two things that set the Transition apart from previous attempts at flying cars: it's wings fold in and out in a short 30 seconds, and the driving and flying controls have been kept completely separate. They believe that this will be enough to make their attempt, a real commercial success.

As the technological age comes to an end, we find ourselves with products that, just one generation away, seemed hundreds of years in future. But as highly advanced as it all seems, the great leaps in technology seem to be slowing down. So it leaves one to wonder, what happens to society when we run out of things to invent? -Matthew Ferris
