The word LARP actually means: Live Action Role-Playing. This is essentially a real life version of the game World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy. The players range from elves to humans. T Each player then gets to pick out his or her class, this consists of: fighter, mage, thief, or monk (or even a mixture of classes). The player (if they are a mage) can use magic and weapons (non lethal of course). After choosing your class, larpers band into differ- O ent kingdoms or countries. Then gather together to venture on their quest to conquer the king- dom. This game is played all throughout our country the world by real life everyday people. This is a game that is on the rise and has even made an appearance in multiple movies such as, “Role Mod- els.” Alex Apgar (one of our writers) is a current larper, he claims to be a level 10 mage, so even I our own Trojans are capable of participating. So what are you waiting for? Get out and LARP! - Alex Apgar and Kyle Keszei T Let’s Get Fit! The warmer the weather the more options you have to get out and hang with your friends. Most people like to sit on their couch and do nothing but watch TV or Netflex, but not this summer! Being fit is one of America’s biggest problems, with so many food options the bad food is always the first choice. First step to getting in shape is stop drinking pop, pop kills your teeth and depending on how much you drink once you stop you can lose up to 20 pounds easy! Water is always an option and it’s healthy, Getting outside and going for a hike or jog is good exercise and you’ll get sun but don’t forget your sun screen. Instead of fast food go home cut some fruit and vegetables up, they are low in calories and healthy with vitamin’s depending on what you eat. If you don’t like healthy food then just cut down on what you eat; eat smaller pro- portions and spread them out. Always eat a good breakfast and exercise at least three times a week. Get out and live life— get fit! T H E T O R C H -Tiffany Montgomery P A G E VOLUME XIII, ISSUE IX Great Ways to get a Great Glow! As the weather begins to grow warmer and the days go by faster we are faced with the beginning stages of summer. Once this beloved season has come, the days inside will be no longer. Everyone will want to be rid of their pasty white skin and welcome a new glowing tan. In case you missed the memo, tanning is bad for you, though it does have its benefits to your skin, such as vitamin D, overall it isn’t healthy. Exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun or tanning beds, not only increases your risk of skin cancer, but it also ages your skin dramatically. If you still want to look golden for the sum- mer, here are a few safe methods of doing so. Instead of spray tans try a safer technique, such as tanning lotion. Within the lotion that includes an ingredient called di- hydroxyacetone, or DHA, which dyes the skin and provides a healthier looking glow. This method has been researched and has been proved safe for manual and external use, only. When doing this technique don’t forget to exfoliate your skin, mak- ing sure that it is smooth before the application of the tanning lotion. If you do decide to lie out in the sun, make sure you apply sunscreen. When deciding on which types of sunscreen to ap- ply look at the labels carefully. Sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are better at blocking UV lights, and providing a longer application time for water sports. Though these sunscreens stay on longer, it still needs to be reapplied regularly. Reducing the amount of time actually spent in the sun is the best way to keep your skin safe. Yes it’s tempting to stay out longer, creating a more noticeable tan. However the more dangerous and stronger UV rays are present from 10am- 4pm. Staying in the shade as much as possible during that time is a must, even if clouds are present, 80% of the sun’s UV rays can get through the clouds. Dressing for the function is a smart idea, especially for your skin. Wearing the new trend may look cool, but the feeling of burnt skin won’t. It’s important to wear clothes that protect your body, it might not look as cute as another article of clothing, but you won’t have peeling skin. -Sydney Geier A YEAR IN REVIEW—CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Everyone enjoys getting off school in the winter, who doesn’t love to sleep in and go sledding when there is tons of snow outside? This year the freezing weather and snow certainly gave us a ton of calamity days this year. We had so many calamity days that the district had to issue us more and the school board enforced a new way to make up the assignments and lessons that we missed. Blizzard Bags were a hassle on both the students and the teachers, and it was a definite shock for Glen Este to actually have to use them.
