+Mileena's True Intentions+... by Jashlyn Davis +Mileena's True Intentions+... By Jashlyn Davis "Love can be blind, beautiful, and irresistible. Our hearts are taken over by its power, reborn anew. But in the midst of our own minds, love can conquer all and love can deceive us all." “Auntie Milly!” shouted out Kiona, one of Liu Kang’s and Kitana’s twin daughters. She happily ran to her favorite aunt with a drawing in her hands. Kiona was more like her mother in almost every way, except her good- natured style. She liked Sais, the color violet and teddies. She was a sweet girl with a lot of personality and joy inside her heart. She was only 5 years old, filled with excitement and cheer at already a young age. Kiona had her mother’s hair and her eyes; she had her father’s golden color and smile, the same smile her mother loved so very much. Since the time of her and her sister’s birth, Mileena grew very close with the two children and taught them how to make teddy bears during their free time. Mileena was just like them, a child with a newfound heart inside of her soul. She’s been through so much pain and confusion in her life, that she finally found the long peace she sought for. Mileena still had her beautiful face that her “father”, Shao Kahn gave her when she tried to kill Kitana years ago. Her face was so radiant, so beautiful, that many men around Edenia wanted her hand in marriage. Of course Mileena refused because her heart belonged to one man, Kuai Liang, known as Sub-Zero. They met in Earth-realm after Shao Kahn was defeated and both grew close as the years began to come. They were outside the Edenian palace, gazing at the night sky as the stars above were shooting beautiful white beams. “Make a wish, Kuai.” Mileena said as she looked into his ice-blue eyes. Kuai smiled at her, leaning closer as he gave her a nice, wet kiss. Mileena touched his hand, enclosing it with hers as she began to suck and kiss on his bottom lip. Kuai stroked her hair, holding the back of her neck as the kiss gets deeper and sexual between them. She moaned through the kiss as Kuai stopped to kiss her neck. He licked circles on her collarbone as his tongue wiggled on her sweet spots. Mileena’s dragon eyes glowed so beautifully in the night sky. “Kuai…..mmm……so naughty.” moaned Mileena. Kuai stopped kissing her neck and picked her up to take her back inside the palace. Mileena giggled as she gave him a quick kiss on the lips. Suddenly, Kiona found her aunt being carried by the man she calls, “Uncle Subby”. The two lovebirds stopped as they saw the pint-sized Kitana-lookalike staring at them. Embarrassed, Mileena laughed nervously, “Sweet child, where is your mommy?” Kiona replied, “Mommy is with Grandma and Daddy to Earth-realm. They won’t be back until tomorrow. Look! I drew you this picture Auntie Milly!” Mileena’s eyes grew big as she saw a stick figure picture of herself that read, “For Our Best Auntie Ever, We love you! –Love, Kiona and Kion.” Mileena’s eyes let out tears as she asked Kuai to put her down. She took the drawing in her hand as tear droplets landed on the tan-colored paper. Her niece smiled at her and hugged her tightly as she could. “I love you Auntie Milly, please promise that you will always love me too.” Kiona’s words touched Kuai’s heart as he tried not to cry himself. He was amazed that Mileena was loved by her two nieces and new family members of Edenia. He thought about his brother and how he became a servant of evil under the rule of Shao Kahn. Kuai began to blame himself for not protecting his brother and went into deep denial of ever wondering if he could get his brother back from the Forces of Darkness. Mileena cried as he and Kiona both comforted her together. The mere love that surrounded Mileena made her own heart weep of joy. For once, she was a good person, growing closer to her sister every day the time went by. She liked the new her and she was free to love and protect her loved ones without obeying any master. After Mileena tucked in her two nieces into bed, she started humming lullabies as the two beautiful twin girls slowly fell asleep. She continued to hum as she thought about Hattori Hanzo, the ex-general from her father’s army. She remembered the long nights he use to hum to her whenever she had trouble sleeping when they were on a mission to kill Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung. In her mind, she tried to forget him, but in her heart, she began to miss him in so many ways. Mileena…I promise to protect you and love only you for the rest of my days. His voice made her shiver, his skin made her melt, she wanted to stay with him so he could fulfill that promise he once had made to her. But isn’t this wrong? Her heart is for Kuai Liang, the man that would place her as co-leader of the Lin Kuei in the near future. Kuai wasn’t attracted to Mileena because of her face he was attracted to her heart and her loving smile that made him forget about all the other women that have ever approached him. These feelings that Mileena had for Kuai…she wanted him to know how important he really was to her, no matter what it took. She sighed and left from her nieces’ room, thinking about Hattori even though she should be thinking about Kuai, the love of her life. She went into the room that she and Kuai shared and laid on the bed with him. Without taking off her dress, she fell asleep beside him as Kuai got up to place the teddy bear she made for him beside her sleeping body. Kuai left the room and wept outside. He cried because…he knew of Hattori and he knew that Mileena gave her virginity to him. His tears froze as he kept crying, thinking about the first night he spent with her. She asked him to take her virginity, but that’s when he suddenly realized that Baraka was telling him the truth. Kuai had Baraka by his throat as he made an icicle with a sharp edge pointed to Baraka’s throat. “*GASP!* Ack! I’m telling you the truth!! She and Hattori Hanzo took out Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung. They were together!! I’m just delivering a warning meesage!” Kuai wasn’t convinced at Baraka as the sharp edge was 2 inches away from his neck. “Demonic beast, prepare to die. I don’t have time for your deception.” Kuai said as his hand was gripping the life out of Baraka’s throat. “GAK!! P-please!! I will prove it to you! Hattori took her virginity in Outworld! She was in love with him and so was he!! When I spied on them after witnessing the death of my master, she and Hattori were kissing in a ball of flames! He hummed lullabies in her ears as she went to sleep on his chest! EGGHH!!” Baraka screamed as he was losing air. Kuai dropped Baraka as he looked down to the floor. He couldn’t believe that Mileena wanted him to take her virginity but it was already taken by some guy he never met or heard before. With Kuai lost in his trance, he was suckered punch by Baraka as he went towards the room Mileena was in. Since then…Kuai went into thinking, he felt like Baraka was lying to save himself, but the more he observed Mileena’s behavior, the more he doubted that Mileena didn’t actually love him. He formed a piece of ice and carved it into a heart. He stroked his finger across it with the initials, “MXS” (Mileena and Sub-Zero) His beautiful ice creation was held in his hands as he thought about Mileena. He didn’t care about what had happened between her and this Hattori fellow, so he decided to go back to Earth-realm for a special gift, just for HIS Mileena. The next day, Mileena was awoken by her nieces and sister, Kitana. The two twin girls jumped happily on her bed as Mileena giggled childishly with them. “Wakey wakey, Aunt Milly! We made you breakfast in bed!” said Kion. Mileena smiled as she pushed her hair back to see what the girls have made. Two eggs on slightly buttered toast, grapes, and a small bowl of hot cereal with a smiley face made with raisins. Mileena smiled as she stuffed her mouth with hot cereal as Kion and Kiona hugged their aunt tightly. “Go on girls, me and your aunt need to talk.” said Kitana. “Okay Mommy!” the girls said in unison and left the room with smiles and giggles. Kitana looked at her sister with smirk on her face. Mileena was eating childishly as her cheeks were filled with hot cereal and eggs. Kitana laughed at her as she wiped her sister’s mouth with a hanky. “Mileena, my children adore you. They have grown to love such a person that equally loves them so much. I am so blessed to have you in our hearts.

Her people, her kingdom, her realm, all of it. safe, forever, from the influence of Shao Kahn or any other who would try to claim it for their own. And the price had been her. All of her. Mind, body, and soul. To kombat Shao Kahn's latest ploy to regain his hold on Edenia, Kitana had required what the Earthrealmers called a "ringer" in a Mortal Kombat tournament, someone who could not only defeat Shao Kahn's warriors, but who could, in doing so, guarantee the safety of Edenia. Such a warrior had been impossible to find in the Realms, so Kitana had made her bargain to have a warrior imported from elsewhere. Though there were six different realms within the universe, that universe was not the only one. There were others, parallel dimensions where things were similar yet different. The power of all the realms could allow one unlimited access to these alternate universes, where more power lay for the claiming. This was one reason Shao Kahn sought to control and merge all the realms with his own Outworld. Without this power, opening portals to these alternate universes was tricky. It had only happened once before, with the agreement of powerful beings on both sides. However, Kitana was both knowledgeable and tenacious, and had found ways to barter with stranger beings then the Elder Gods to allow her access to one such portal. Through it, she had summoned her ringer. His soul unbound by allegiance to any Realm, Erik could win the tournament not for Edenia, and not for Outworld, but for himself, and so could become an eternal champion.

  • Mortal Kombat: Annihilation
Mortal Kombat: Annihilation A Novel by Jerome Preisler Based on a Story by Lawrence Kasanoff & Joshua Wexler & John Tobias and the screenplay by Brent V. Friedman & Bryce Zabel “Somebody’s gotta remind this windbag, cheaters never prosper,” Johnny said, stepping forward and flexing for battle. Shao Kahn, however, was one cheater who had come prepared. With a horrible ripping sound, the sky above the devastated landscape opened like a slit paper bag, the edges of the newly opened Portal actually peeling back before Johnny’s awed, disbelieving eyes. He watched in amazement as dozens of humanoid forms began to rain from the widening tear in the chrono-spacial fabric, hooded Outworld warriors armed with hand and foot spikes, hooked chains, throwing stars, nunchaku, bo staffs, and other hand-to-hand combat weapons he’d never seen before – weapons that had not been devised by any earthly intelligence. The Extermination Squad spilled from the impossible hole in the sky, landing on their feet after executing a perfectly coordinated sequence of tae-soo flips, fanning out around Rayden’s small group of champions in a half circle. Outnumbered, caught by surprise, Johnny Cage turned back to his fellows, his bravado suddenly failing. “Uh, guys,” he said, “any volunteers?” CHAPTER ONE It isn’t supposed to be like this, he thought. Cloud-shadows gathering under the sun, blotting out the daylight... Dead birds, whole flocks of them, dropping from the sky, the feathers plucked from their carcasses, swirling like confetti in some madly festive slaughter... The wind howling like ten thousand demons, sweeping across the darkened landscape in violent gusts, uprooting bushes, tearing limbs off trees, flinging the trees themselves through the air as if they were weightless splinters..

  • Mortal Kombat II Tournament
SPECIAL SECTION GAMING INSURRECTION’S TOURNAMENT from the editor aming Insurrection, as a whole, is a longtime fan of the G Mortal Kombat franchise, and in 2010, we brainstormed about ways to put that love into play. The plan material- ized in a competition under tournament conditions. The result was our Mortal Kombat II tournament. Completed through a year and a half of recording, writing and analyzing, myself and former Associate Editor Jamie Mosley played through a double-elimination bracket. The results were highly surprising. Fan favorites (and some of our own personal favorites) made it far. Others did not. Tiers were clearly defined and broken down, a truly fascinating process to watch unfold. Also part of the tournament was an experiment to see if our high level of play matched up with a long-ago ranking chart from the now-defunct GamePro magazine. We’re happy to say that it didn’t necessarily match tier for tier. The results of our tournament revealed just what we hypothesized: Everyone plays Mortal Kombat II differently, and when it comes down to it, tiers aren’t necessarily as important as one would think. This special section is the culmination of hard work and Lyndsey Hicks, editor-in-chief fun. Read on for bone-crunching analysis, tips and ideas we learned as we completed our first Mortal Kombat II tourna- ment. • Mortal Kombat: Guts, Girls, and Gore Jonathan Gros March 8, 2020 Mortal Kombat, a Fighting Game Series Well-Known for Its Focus
Mortal Kombat: Guts, Girls, and Gore Jonathan Gros March 8, 2020 Mortal Kombat, a fighting game series well-known for its focus on gory and brutal deaths and fatalities, is experiencing a shift in its ideals and executions of character designs. When people normally hear about Mortal Kombat, the first thing that usually comes to mind is extreme violence and women fighters in skimpy clothing.1 NetherRealm studio, who currently develops the series, is trying to get past this way of thinking. The two most recent titles in the series, Mortal Kombat X (2015) and Mortal Kombat 11 (2019) have started a new shift into the feminist territory. These particular titles have introduced women fighters in a more “realistic” style in character design, and the female characters in these games have had a larger impact in the story than previous titles. Kronika sets into motion events that would never transpire without her actions. The introduction of Kronika into the Mortal Kombat series creates a shift in power in which empowered female characters have greater influence on plot and lore than previously; due to this, Mortal Kombat 11 focuses on female power, which ultimately gives the series a fresh start and the freedom to focus on female characters, as opposed to the traditional male gaze- dominated route the series has taken in the past. The male gaze is a theory that often is accused of being prominent in the Mortal Kombat series. This theory is all about the male perspective: The Male Gaze is a term from Gaze theory that describes the tendency of works to assume a male viewpoint even when they do not have a specific narrative Point of View, and in particular 1 The first Mortal Kombat game was responsible for the parental rating system ESRB.

  • Gender and Battle Cries in Classic Arcade Fighting Games
Media and Communication (ISSN: 2183–2439) 2019, Volume 7, Issue 4, Pages 186–197 DOI: 10.17645/mac.v7i4.2300 Article Audible Efforts: Gender and Battle Cries in Classic Arcade Fighting Games Milena Droumeva School of Communication, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, BC V5A 1S6, Canada; E-Mail: [email protected] Submitted: 28 June 2019 | Accepted: 10 October 2019 | Published: 20 December 2019 Abstract Video games are demanding work indeed. So demanding that our screen heroes and heroines are constantly making sounds of strife, struggle, or victory while conducting surrogate labor for us running, fighting, saving worlds. These sounds also represent the very real demanding labor of voice actors, whose burnout and vocal strain have recently come to the fore in terms of the games industries’ labor standards (Cazden, 2017). But do heroes and she-roes sound the same? What are the demands—virtual, physical, and emotional—of maintaining sexist sonic tropes in popular media; demands that are required of the industry, the game program, and the player alike? Based on participatory observations of gameplay (i.e., the research team engaging with the material by playing the games we study), close reading of gendered sonic presence, and a historical content analysis of three iconic arcade fighting games, this article reports on a notable trend: As games self- purportedly and in the eyes of the wider community improve the visual representation of female playable leads important aspects of the vocal representation of women has not only lagged behind but become more exaggeratedly gendered with higher-fidelity bigger-budget game productions. In essence, femininity continues to be a disempowering design pattern in ways far more nuanced than sexualization alone.

  • Mortal Kombat Playground
Mortal Kombat Playground Written by Eric Williams Illustrated by Dexter Morrill Chapter 1: The New Kid Years ago, Outworld Elementary School and Earth Realm Elementary school merged into one. Raiden and Shao Kahn, the principals of the schools, couldn’t decide who should be in charge. So they held a playground tournament among the students twice a year. The principal of the winning side rules the entire school however they see fit. It was Liu Kang’s first day of fifth grade at Outworld-Earth Elementary school. His parents had transferred him to the special school after discovering his peculiar talents. Liu adjusted his red headband and walked towards the main entrance. “Ah, you must be Liu Kang,” said a low whispery voice. Liu looked up to see a man in white robes and a straw conical hat. “My name is Assistant Principal Raiden, and I represent the students of Earth Realm Elementary School. I’m happy to meet you.” Liu was taken aback by the sparkle of electricity in the man’s eyes. “Um, hello. I was told to look for the principal. Are you taking me to him?” Raiden offered a tight lipped smile. “I don’t think so. Principal Shao Kahn leaves most of the day to day duties to me. It’s better that way. I’ve actually arranged for a student to show you around and help get you acclimated to our school.” Raiden stepped aside to reveal a short brown haired kid standing behind him. He was wearing black pants and aviator sunglasses. “Hey dude, my name’s Johnny Cage, but the ladies just call me JC.
