Mortal Kombat: Kitana, Slave Princess Part I: Bargain Kitana Had Sold
Mortal Kombat: Kitana, Slave Princess Part I: Bargain Kitana had sold herself to save her people. Her people, her kingdom, her realm, all of it. safe, forever, from the influence of Shao Kahn or any other who would try to claim it for their own. And the price had been her. All of her. Mind, body, and soul. To kombat Shao Kahn's latest ploy to regain his hold on Edenia, Kitana had required what the Earthrealmers called a "ringer" in a Mortal Kombat tournament, someone who could not only defeat Shao Kahn's warriors, but who could, in doing so, guarantee the safety of Edenia. Such a warrior had been impossible to find in the Realms, so Kitana had made her bargain to have a warrior imported from elsewhere. Though there were six different realms within the universe, that universe was not the only one. There were others, parallel dimensions where things were similar yet different. The power of all the realms could allow one unlimited access to these alternate universes, where more power lay for the claiming. This was one reason Shao Kahn sought to control and merge all the realms with his own Outworld. Without this power, opening portals to these alternate universes was tricky. It had only happened once before, with the agreement of powerful beings on both sides. However, Kitana was both knowledgeable and tenacious, and had found ways to barter with stranger beings then the Elder Gods to allow her access to one such portal. Through it, she had summoned her ringer. His soul unbound by allegiance to any Realm, Erik could win the tournament not for Edenia, and not for Outworld, but for himself, and so could become an eternal champion. -

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation
Mortal Kombat: Annihilation A Novel by Jerome Preisler Based on a Story by Lawrence Kasanoff & Joshua Wexler & John Tobias and the screenplay by Brent V. Friedman & Bryce Zabel “Somebody’s gotta remind this windbag, cheaters never prosper,” Johnny said, stepping forward and flexing for battle. Shao Kahn, however, was one cheater who had come prepared. With a horrible ripping sound, the sky above the devastated landscape opened like a slit paper bag, the edges of the newly opened Portal actually peeling back before Johnny’s awed, disbelieving eyes. He watched in amazement as dozens of humanoid forms began to rain from the widening tear in the chrono-spacial fabric, hooded Outworld warriors armed with hand and foot spikes, hooked chains, throwing stars, nunchaku, bo staffs, and other hand-to-hand combat weapons he’d never seen before – weapons that had not been devised by any earthly intelligence. The Extermination Squad spilled from the impossible hole in the sky, landing on their feet after executing a perfectly coordinated sequence of tae-soo flips, fanning out around Rayden’s small group of champions in a half circle. Outnumbered, caught by surprise, Johnny Cage turned back to his fellows, his bravado suddenly failing. “Uh, guys,” he said, “any volunteers?” CHAPTER ONE It isn’t supposed to be like this, he thought. Cloud-shadows gathering under the sun, blotting out the daylight... Dead birds, whole flocks of them, dropping from the sky, the feathers plucked from their carcasses, swirling like confetti in some madly festive slaughter... The wind howling like ten thousand demons, sweeping across the darkened landscape in violent gusts, uprooting bushes, tearing limbs off trees, flinging the trees themselves through the air as if they were weightless splinters.. -

Mortal Kombat II Tournament
SPECIAL SECTION GAMING INSURRECTION’S TOURNAMENT from the editor aming Insurrection, as a whole, is a longtime fan of the G Mortal Kombat franchise, and in 2010, we brainstormed about ways to put that love into play. The plan material- ized in a competition under tournament conditions. The result was our Mortal Kombat II tournament. Completed through a year and a half of recording, writing and analyzing, myself and former Associate Editor Jamie Mosley played through a double-elimination bracket. The results were highly surprising. Fan favorites (and some of our own personal favorites) made it far. Others did not. Tiers were clearly defined and broken down, a truly fascinating process to watch unfold. Also part of the tournament was an experiment to see if our high level of play matched up with a long-ago ranking chart from the now-defunct GamePro magazine. We’re happy to say that it didn’t necessarily match tier for tier. The results of our tournament revealed just what we hypothesized: Everyone plays Mortal Kombat II differently, and when it comes down to it, tiers aren’t necessarily as important as one would think. This special section is the culmination of hard work and Lyndsey Hicks, editor-in-chief fun. Read on for bone-crunching analysis, tips and ideas we learned as we completed our first Mortal Kombat II tourna- ment. Mortal Kombat: Guts, Girls, and Gore Jonathan Gros March 8, 2020 Mortal Kombat, a Fighting Game Series Well-Known for Its Focus
Mortal Kombat: Guts, Girls, and Gore Jonathan Gros March 8, 2020 Mortal Kombat, a fighting game series well-known for its focus on gory and brutal deaths and fatalities, is experiencing a shift in its ideals and executions of character designs. When people normally hear about Mortal Kombat, the first thing that usually comes to mind is extreme violence and women fighters in skimpy clothing.1 NetherRealm studio, who currently develops the series, is trying to get past this way of thinking. The two most recent titles in the series, Mortal Kombat X (2015) and Mortal Kombat 11 (2019) have started a new shift into the feminist territory. These particular titles have introduced women fighters in a more “realistic” style in character design, and the female characters in these games have had a larger impact in the story than previous titles. Kronika sets into motion events that would never transpire without her actions. The introduction of Kronika into the Mortal Kombat series creates a shift in power in which empowered female characters have greater influence on plot and lore than previously; due to this, Mortal Kombat 11 focuses on female power, which ultimately gives the series a fresh start and the freedom to focus on female characters, as opposed to the traditional male gaze- dominated route the series has taken in the past. The male gaze is a theory that often is accused of being prominent in the Mortal Kombat series. This theory is all about the male perspective: The Male Gaze is a term from Gaze theory that describes the tendency of works to assume a male viewpoint even when they do not have a specific narrative Point of View, and in particular 1 The first Mortal Kombat game was responsible for the parental rating system ESRB. -

Gender and Battle Cries in Classic Arcade Fighting Games
Media and Communication (ISSN: 2183–2439) 2019, Volume 7, Issue 4, Pages 186–197 DOI: 10.17645/mac.v7i4.2300 Article Audible Efforts: Gender and Battle Cries in Classic Arcade Fighting Games Milena Droumeva School of Communication, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, BC V5A 1S6, Canada; E-Mail: [email protected] Submitted: 28 June 2019 | Accepted: 10 October 2019 | Published: 20 December 2019 Abstract Video games are demanding work indeed. So demanding that our screen heroes and heroines are constantly making sounds of strife, struggle, or victory while conducting surrogate labor for us running, fighting, saving worlds. These sounds also represent the very real demanding labor of voice actors, whose burnout and vocal strain have recently come to the fore in terms of the games industries’ labor standards (Cazden, 2017). But do heroes and she-roes sound the same? What are the demands—virtual, physical, and emotional—of maintaining sexist sonic tropes in popular media; demands that are required of the industry, the game program, and the player alike? Based on participatory observations of gameplay (i.e., the research team engaging with the material by playing the games we study), close reading of gendered sonic presence, and a historical content analysis of three iconic arcade fighting games, this article reports on a notable trend: As games self- purportedly and in the eyes of the wider community improve the visual representation of female playable leads important aspects of the vocal representation of women has not only lagged behind but become more exaggeratedly gendered with higher-fidelity bigger-budget game productions. In essence, femininity continues to be a disempowering design pattern in ways far more nuanced than sexualization alone. -

Mortal Kombat Playground
Mortal Kombat Playground Written by Eric Williams Illustrated by Dexter Morrill Chapter 1: The New Kid Years ago, Outworld Elementary School and Earth Realm Elementary school merged into one. Raiden and Shao Kahn, the principals of the schools, couldn’t decide who should be in charge. So they held a playground tournament among the students twice a year. The principal of the winning side rules the entire school however they see fit. It was Liu Kang’s first day of fifth grade at Outworld-Earth Elementary school. His parents had transferred him to the special school after discovering his peculiar talents. Liu adjusted his red headband and walked towards the main entrance. “Ah, you must be Liu Kang,” said a low whispery voice. Liu looked up to see a man in white robes and a straw conical hat. “My name is Assistant Principal Raiden, and I represent the students of Earth Realm Elementary School. I’m happy to meet you.” Liu was taken aback by the sparkle of electricity in the man’s eyes. “Um, hello. I was told to look for the principal. Are you taking me to him?” Raiden offered a tight lipped smile. “I don’t think so. Principal Shao Kahn leaves most of the day to day duties to me. It’s better that way. I’ve actually arranged for a student to show you around and help get you acclimated to our school.” Raiden stepped aside to reveal a short brown haired kid standing behind him. He was wearing black pants and aviator sunglasses. “Hey dude, my name’s Johnny Cage, but the ladies just call me JC.
