Robert Detobel is a translator and scholar based in Frankfurt, Germany. He is co-editor (with Dr. Uwe Laugwitz) of the Neues Shake-speare Journal, published annually in Germany since 1997. Author of the book, Wie aus William Shaxsper William Shakespeare wurde (How William Shaxsper became William Shakespeare) (2005), Detobel has appeared in The Elizabethan Review and The Oxfordian, among other scholarly publications. Together with the late K.C. Ligon, he is co-author of the book Shakespeare and The Concealed Poet (2010). This is his third appearance in Brief Chronicles. Michael Dudley, who holds Master’s Degrees in both Library and Information Stud- ies and City Planning, is the history, politics and Indigenous Studies Librarian at the University of Winnipeg. He is the editor of the book Public Libraries and Resilient Cit- ies (2013) and served for three years as the Editorial Chair of Plan Canada magazine. This is his second publication in Brief Chronicles. Jacob Hughes, PhD, graduated in English Literature at Washington State Univer- sity in May 2014. He teaches early English literature, Shakespeare, and composition courses at Washington State University’s campus in Richland. He has also taught courses on medieval and renaissance humanities and digital diversity. Hughes’s dis- sertation, titled “Shakespeare’s Chaucerian Entertainers,” focuses on how Chaucer not only informed some of Shakespeare’s key characters, such as Falstaff, but also how the poet influenced the playwright’s views on dramaturgy. He has published articles on English pedagogy, digital humanities, and several book reviews. Between 2009 and 2013, he was the managing editor of the Rocky Mountain Review of Lan- guage and Literature. Richard Malim was a practising English Lawyer. He qualified in 1962 and after a period in London joined the provincial family firm, rising to become senior partner Brief Chronicles VI (2015) v in 1993. He finally retired in 2003. In 1991 he joined the De Vere Society, and from 2003 has been the Society’s secretary. He was the General editor of the Society’s book of essays commemoratingthe quatercentenary of Oxford’s death, Great Oxford (Parapress 2005), and subsequently the author of The Earl of Oxford and the “Making” of Shakespeare: The Life of Edward de Vere in Context (McFarland 2012). James Norwood earned BA degrees in Drama and French from the University of California at Irvine, as well as MA and PhD.degrees in Dramatic Art from the Univer- sity of California at Berkeley. For twenty-six years, he taught humanities and the per- forming arts at the University of Minnesota. For a decade, he taught a semester course on the Shakespeare authorship question. He wrote the foreword to the paperback edi- tion of Charles Beauclerk’s Shakespeare’s Lost Kingdom and served as a consultant for the documentary film Last Will. & Testament. William J. Ray attended the University of California, Berkeley, and graduated “with great distinction” in the Political Science Department in 1968. He continued his intel- lectual and artistic interests while working and homesteading East of Willits, Califor- nia, publishing regionally in books, journals, newspapers, and most recently lecturing and writing on the Shakespeare identification issue. He is a former Shakespeare Fel- lowship Trustee who produces authorship related DVD’s, essays, and reviews, col- lected in the website, wjray.net. Don Rubin is a Professor and former Chair of the Department of Theatre at York University in Toronto. Founding director of York’s Graduate Program in Theatre and Performance Studies (MA and PhD), he is the Series Editor of Routledge’s six-volume World Encyclopedia of Contemporary Theatre and was the Founding Editor of Canada’s national theater quarterly, Canadian Theatre Review. He is President of the Canadian Theatre Critics Association and a member of the editorial board of the webjournal Critical Stages. Professor Rubin was coordinator of the 2013 Joint Conference of the Shakespeare Fellowhip and the Shakespeare Oxford Society in Toronto, and is a trust- ee of the Shakespeare Oxford Fellowship. Earl Showerman, MD, graduated from Harvard College and the University of Michi- gan Medical School, has been a patron of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival since 1974, and reads at the Hannon Library of Southern Oregon University in pursuit of the Shakespeare authorship question. He has served as a Trustee of the Shakespeare Ox- ford Fellowship and the Shakespeare Authorship Coalition. Since 2005 he has pre- sented and published a series of papers on the topic of Shakespeare’s “greater Greek,” explicating the Greek dramatic sources in Hamlet, The Winter’s Tale, Pericles, Much Ado about Nothing, Timon of Athens, Troilus and Cressida and the Tudor interlude, Horestes. James A. Warren was a Foreign Service officer with the U.S. Department of State for more than twenty years, during which he served in public diplomacy positions at U.S. embassies and consulates in eight countries, mostly in Asia. Following his career with the State Department he served as Executive Director of the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training (ADST) and then as Regional Director for Brief Chronicles VI (2015) vi Southeast Asia for the Institute of International Education (IIE). James is currently devoting his energies to literary and musical pursuits, and in 2013 received the Vero Nihil Verius Award for Distinguished Shakespearean Scholarship from Concordia University (Portland, Oregon) for his accomplishment as the editor of An Index to Oxfordian Publications. He is a Fellow with the Center for the Study of the Great Ideas and the Adler-Aquinas Institute. Richard Waugaman, MD, is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University School of Medicine, a Training Analyst Emeritus at the Washington Psychoanalytic Institute, and a recognized expert on multiple personality disorder. He is a regular reader at the Folger Shakespeare Library, and has written extensively on Shakespeare, the psychology of anonymity, and the case for Oxford’s authorship of the Shakespearean canon. Alexander Waugh is the author of several books, including Classical Music (1995), Opera (1996), Time (1999) and God (2002). His family memoir, Fathers and Sons (2004), was made into 90-minute BBC documentary; a second family memoir, The House of Wittgenstein the story of the Austrian family of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, was published in 2008. The General Editor of the scholarly 42-volume Complete Works of Evelyn Waugh for Oxford University Press, Waugh is a Senior Visiting Fellow at the University of Leicester, Honorary President of the Shakespeare Authorship Coalition and life-member of the De Vere Society. He co-edited, with John Shahan, Shakespeare Beyond Doubt? (2013) and published Shakespeare in Court as a ‘Kindle Short’ in 2014. Richard Whalen is co-editor with Ren Draya of Blackburn College of Othello in the Oxfordian Shakespeare Series. He is a general editor of the Oxfordian editions series and the author of Shakespeare Who Was He? The Oxford Challenge to the Bard of Avon (Greenwood-Praeger, 1994). What is the ratio of the area of the smaller square to the area of the larger square? © 2009 National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Inc. Resources for Teaching Math http://illuminations.nctm.org Solution: ½. One way to see this is to rotate the blue triangles onto the top of the red trapezoids, with the hypotenuse of the triangle flush with the shorter base of the trapezoid. Then it’s pretty easy to see that if the four red and blue triangles are folded over, they’d completely cover the yellow square. In other words, the area of the yellow square is equal to the area of red trapezoids and blue triangles combined, so the ratio of the smaller square to the larger square is ½. It is also possible to calculate the area of the larger and smaller squares. Start by assuming that the length of the shorter sides of the triangles is 1 unit, as shown below. Then the hypotenuse of each triangle is 2 , and since the hypotenuse is also a side of the regular octagon, then all sides of the octagon are 2 . Consequently, the side length of the larger square is 2+ 2, and the side length of the smaller square is 1+ 2, so their 2 2 respective areas are (22+=+) 642 and (12+=+) 322. Dividing the area of the smaller square by that of the larger yields ½. If those calculations are a little too messy for you, then here is an alternative solution.

    1 Reforming England’s ‘harde covetouse hert’: 1 William Worcester and the diagnosis of defeat. Catherine Halsey By 1450 the English had been defeated in battle at Formigny and had lost their lands in northern France, with the exception of Calais. In 1453 the Hundred Years War was effectively over. Inevitably, contemporaries attempted to diagnose the factors that had let to defeat. William Worcester offered a diagnosis in the Boke of Noblesse. Although the purpose of the Boke was to encourage and promote a new campaign in France, Worcester also sought to explain and assess the English defeat and to offer models of reform for the future conduct of the war. He conventionally attributed defeat to the nation’s ‘synne and wrecchidnes’ and, within this framework, he identified the particular faults of the nation which had led to divine disapproval. These faults were lack of prudence and governance ‘and havyng no consideracion to the comon wele, but rathir to magnifie and enriche oure silfe by singuler covetise’.2 He discussed the practical manifestations of lack of prudence with reference to the 1 William Worcester, The Boke of Noblesse, ed. He did this by emphasising issues of lineal and national pride and by presenting the French war as the forum for chivalrous and noble deeds.

H We know little of many who were once great in the earth, and still less of the life of the people in their times. The life of the past must be visualized by piecing together detached and scattered fragments from many sources. The result is a composite picture, not a portrait. It is only now and then that the student of history is able to penetrate be- hind the veil of obscurity and get glimpses of intimate per- sonal life and learn to know the men and women of the past with some degree of acquaintance. A rare opportunity to know English provincial life in the fifteenth century is afforded in that wonderful collection known as “The Paston Letters.” This familiar correspond- ence of a Norfolk family, whose position was that of small gentry, covers three generations in some of the most stirring years of English history. It was the age when England’s empire in France was wrested from her by Joan of Arc; the age when the white rose of York and the red rose of Lan- caster were dyed a common color on the battlefields of Barnet, Towton, Wakefield Heath, and Bosworth Field. It was the century of W’arwick the kingmaker, and Henry Tudor ; of Sir Thomas More’s birth and of Caxton’s “Game of Chess.” The intense human interest of these letters has command- ed the admiration of readers ever since John Fenn edited 116 Rural Life in XV Century England 117 them, or those then known, in 1787.

It emanated from the historical mutations of the post-Renaissance era that set in motion what Norbert Elias calls the civilizing process, one that spawned a repressive mode of socialization in tandem with the cultural and ideological hegemony of the new power elite. Accordingly, childhood became a metaphor for oppression targeting not only children, but also women, the underclass, the social outcast, and the colonized as they all were deemed “incompletely human”. From mid-nineteenth century on, however, childhood began to evince a liberating potential in tandem with the changing direction of modern Western civilization. This ushered in an alternative concept of childhood inspired by the shared characteristics between the medieval and modern child that finds expression in the works of distinguished literary figures of the Victorian era. What followed was an entire movement towards the recognition of children’s rights and status that set the context for the growing interest in childhood as a subject of historical inquiry in the twentieth century. This conceptual vicissitude of childhood is central to the present thesis which I pursue in relation to the literary genre of fairy tale.

    ABSTRACT THE PASTON WOMEN AND GENTRY CULTURE: THE DEVELOPMENT OF INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIAL IDENTITY IN FIFTEENTH-CENTURY ENGLAND This gender and social history examines the role of the Paston family in the developing gentry culture in fifteenth-century England. A family who desired to increase their social standing, the Pastons worked to first obtain land and wealth in order to become a part of the gentry. This study primarily examines the second way that the Pastons proved their gentility; through exhibiting behavior associated with the gentry, the Pastons proved to the public that they were above the peasantry and that they belonged in the upper echelons of society. In their quest for gentility, the behavior of the Paston women was particularly important to the efforts of their family. This thesis focuses on the ways that Agnes and Margaret Paston adopted the advice present in contemporary conduct manuals and how they incorporated such behavior into their letters. By presenting an image of gentility in their letters, Agnes and Margaret participated in both the developing gentry culture in fifteenth-century England and in their family’s efforts to increase their social status. Letter writing was a venue through which medieval women could express their opinions, and in the case of the Paston women, it was a way for them to directly impact the station of their family.
