In fact it contains the history of the Diocese and the parishes. Archival work is very important as a reference point as we plot a course for the future . The Archives Manual put together by Julia Mathieson, Honoary Diocesan Archivist, (recently retired) will be helpful to us as we continue her good work. I commend this Manual to you as a necessary tool to help us record and tell the story of God’s love in our Diocese. There are 17 houses, and about 116 men, not counting women and children. We found sheep and cows here. —Father Baudoin, ca. 1697 Like other seventeenth-century observers in Newfoundland, Father Baudoin demonstrated a knack for "not counting women and children" and a propensity to lump them together with the livestock.1 English naval officers in the late seventeenth century were also somewhat relaxed about counting women, and certainly about identifying them, in their census reports to the Commissioners of Trade: a mistress of a fishing plantation, if she was enumerated at all, appeared only as the numeral "1" next to her husband's name in a column headed "Wife"; servants were tabulated together in another column, undifferentiated by sex. However, the census system became more systematized with the passage of the Newfoundland Act of 1699, and numbers of mistresses and women servants were more regularly (if not always accurately) reported by the naval commodores and governors annually from that point onwards. Still, the task of tracking Irish women immigrants to the southern Avalon is not an easy one. Newfoundland is not exceptional for the paucity of its early census and immigration records. Historians studying early migration patterns to other parts of North America have also encountered difficulties in ascertaining the actual numbers of people who arrived in the New World. -

A thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of History Memorial University of Newfoundland October 2002 St. John's Newfoundland 11 Abstract This thesis sees religion as a major category of social history. Its focus is the evangelical opposition from 1845 to 1857 to the Tractarianism of Bishop Feild ofthe Church of England. The people of Harbour Buffett, Placentia Bay, and Thomas E. Collett were catalysts in that opposition which echoed back to England, itself. Refusals to pay to the Church Society were not the source of the opposition but merely one avenue of resistance to the theology and practice of Bishop Feild. Bishop Feild introduced Tractarianism to Newfoundland in the context of a robust Roman Catholicism under Bishop Michael Anthony Fleming and a vibrant, expanding Methodism. The latter cooperated with the evangelical Anglicans in the Newfoundland School Society. Feild drove both to toward political collaboration with Roman Catholics in bringing about Responsible Government by pressing for a denominational school system under the control of his clergy, These factors were prominent in Placentia Bay with its expanding economy, population and access to government services. Harbour Buffett was founded out of a desire of a scattered and mobile people, mainly of the evangelical Church of England, to centralize and establish a community with a school and a church. -

David Sydney Nicholas 10 August 2007 2 Abstract A persistent oral tradition links Derwent Coleridge, first principal of St Mark's College, Chelsea, to the training of deacon schoolmasters during the period 1841 to 1864. This innovative model ofelementary schoolteacher made a distinctive contribution to teacher training in England. Justified theologically rather pedagogically, the deacon schoolmaster model gave the college a unique character in the surge towards a comprehensive system ofChurch education. This thesis breaks fresh ground by using documentary evidence to test the oral tradition. The introduction of the model and subsequent training of deacon schoolmasters at St Mark's College have been delineated. Alternative models, and their place in Coleridge's experience and thought, are drawn from contemporary sources. The immediate and long-term effects of increasing control over teacher training by central government, and the impact of opinions within the Church, are assessed in relation to Derwent Coleridge's aims for the College. These influences are described in the context of public debate on deacon schoolmasters in three mid-nineteenth century settings: the Church, Parliament, and the British colonies. The international dimension to the deacon-schoolmaster model is one that previously has not been researched. Hitherto unused documentary sources have added important detail to imprecise elements in the oral tradition ofSt Mark's College, and re-examination oflittle-known material has refreshed and broadened the conventional interpretation and estimate of significance of deacon schoolmasters.
