In the words of Marc Smirnoff, the magazine was "established under the idea that it is time for a good general magazine to originate from the South." The Oxford American publishes fiction, essays, poetry, interviews, reports, commentaries and various forms of graphic art including photographs and drawings. After halting production in Oxford, The Oxford American moved to Little Rock, Arkansas and is currently produced in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Scope and Content Note Collection contains typed and holograph manuscripts, correspondence, ephemeral items, advertising records, photographs and clippings related to The Oxford American magazine. The Contributors grouping is the largest and is organized alphabetically by author's name. Correspondence is arranged chronologically. Frequently, items in the Correspondence series pertain to authors with Contributor files; it is recommended to search the Correspondence series in addition to the Contributor Files if looking for materials on a particular author. The processed materials in this collection have been donated in seven distinct groupings [Original Collection: Boxes 1-8 ; Accretion 1 (96-63): Boxes 9-13 ; Accretion 2 (97-54): Boxes 14-28 ; Accretion 3 (99-68): Boxes 29- 30 ; Accretion 4 (99-69): Boxes 31-70 ; Accretion 5 (2000-156): Boxes 71-73 ; Accretion 6 (2001-69): Boxes 74- 85]. To facilitate research, the various accretions have been gathered in this finding aid cohesively; thus folder numbers do not appear progressively consecutive.
