Quarterly Newsletter May/June 2007 derrinstownderrinstown digestdigest ALHAARTH BAHRI ELNADIM INTIKHAB MARJU MARJU STRIKES AGAIN IN HONG KONG VIVA PATACA (by MARJU) arguably ran the race of his life when winning the G1 Audemars Piguet QEII Cup in fine style at Sha Tin. He beat local hero Vengeance of Rain who stayed on for second, and reversed the placings of the G1 Hong Kong Gold Cup, run earlier this year. Viva Pataca raced comfortably in mid division and produced a scorching burst of speed a furlong out to win by 1 3/4 lengths. This son of Marju then went on to win the G1 Hong Kong Champions & Chater Cup in June for the second year running, and in the process, smashed the Sha Tin course record. INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Viva Pataca will now be aimed at the G1 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in October. Viva Pataca, now a multi Group 1 winning son of Marju, also won the G1 Hong Invasor wins World Cup 2. Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s Invasor was a very impressive winner of the 12th running of the Dubai World Cup, the World’s richest race. Ridden by 19 year old Fernando Jara, the Kiaran McLaughlin trained star won with plenty of style easing into a comfortable lead to score by 1 3/4 lengths. With Discreet Cat in trouble from the onset, it was up to Premier Tap to throw down a challenge, but to no avail. A delighted trainer stated “It’s a joy to come back here with a World Cup favourite and win for Sheikh Hamdan” (Racing Post). According to his trainer, he will run next in the Suburban Handicap G1 in June at Belmont Park, a race he won in 2006. His main aim will then be the Breeders Cup Classic (which he also won in 2006), in October at Monmouth Park. If every- thing goes to plan, Invasor will surpass the great Cigar for all time earnings of a US-based horse. He has already won in excess of €6 million! Another of Shadwell’s stable stars Jazil, will aim for the G1 Stephen Foster H at Churchill in June. El’s Belle ELLA BELLE, by Elnadim, led all the way to take the Listed Likely Exchange Stakes over a mile at Santa Anita. This is the second Stakes victory of her career following her win in the Winter Green Stakes in 2006, a race in which she was placed this year. ASCERTAIN, by INTIKHAB, narrowly defeated Always First in the Elkhorn Stakes G3 at Keeneland in April. After finishing 3rd in the July G3 Stars & Stripes BC H at Arlington, Ascertain battled it out to win by a neck for his trainer Niall O’Callaghan. Ascertain will now be aimed at the G1 Manhattan Handicap at Belmont Park on June 9th. ELECTROSTATIC, 3yo f by ELNADIM, was beaten by a nose in the G3 Windsor Park Stud Breeders Stakes in New Zealand. She was most recently placed in the Rotorua Stakes at Arawa Park. DUBAI TWILIGHT, 3yo son of ALHAARTH, finished second in the Blue Riband Trial over the Derby distance of 12 furlongs. IN SAFE HANDS, 3yo f by INTIKHAB, was narrowly beaten when finishing second in the Listed Swettenham Fillies’ Trial Stakes at York in May. COOL TOUCH, by MARJU, was placed in the Listed Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan. KEEP UP-TO-DATE WITH ALL OUR NEWS on www.derrinstown.com RED HOT INTIKHAB HAS GROUP 1 WIN WITH EVIE RED EVIE (4yo f by INTIKHAB), landed the second Gr.1 of her career when she put her nose in front to win the G1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury. Ridden patiently by Jamie Spencer, Red Evie tracked the leaders and produced a scorching burst of speed to deny Classic winner Ramonti on the line. Red Evie won the G1 Matron Stakes at Leopardstown; G3 Oak Tree Stakes and Listed Sandringham Handicap in 2006, and has now added this G1 event to her growing list of career wins. She will head straight to the Royal meeting at Ascot for the G1 Queen Anne Stakes, where she will again meet Ramonti. INTIKHAB seems to have a lot of luck with the ladies, as he is also the sire of Group winning fillies Paita; Moon Unit and Toupie. MAGICAL “MIKE” WINS LISTED PAVILION FOR INTIKHAB HOH MIKE (3yo c by INTIKHAB), took the honours when winning the Listed Pavilion Stakes at Ascot recently. He was unlucky not to have won the G2 Norfolk Stakes at the same venue last year. However, Hoh Mike has been consistently placed in stakes races including the G2 Flying Childers Stakes at York and the G3 Cornwallis Stakes. He will be aimed at the Temple Stakes at Sandown or a Listed race at the same track for 3 year olds only. His dam Magical Peace visited INTIKHAB again in 2006 and owner/breeder Mrs John Malone has reported that she is very pleased to have a “very attractive bay filly foal”. Hoh Mike’s half sister Endless Peace also visited INTIKHAB this year, and has been successfully scanned in foal. Derrinstown Stud Derby and Guineas Trials staff profile - Derrinstown Stud were yet again proud sponsors of the G2 Christy FLYNN Derby and G3 Guineas Trials at Leopardstown in May. The Derby Trial provides us with an indication of possible Christy Flynn, one of the longest serving hopeful's for the Epsom and Irish Derbys.
