As such, the dissertation considers texts made since the advent of neoliberalism in 1973, and up to the US presidential election of 2016, which marks a major shift in the meanings and values associated with democracy porn. Through historical, textual, and discourse analysis drawing on critical theories of affect, citizenship, and neoliberalism, the dissertation interrogates the complex ways in which democracy porn is constructed and functions within and surrounding moving image ii texts. The project thus tracks the ways neoliberal ideology manifests in the media texts in question, as well as how the consumption of these texts impacts viewers’ understandings of their own citizenship within a democracy increasingly steered by neoliberal principles. The project brings cultural critiques of neoliberalism—particularly of its impact on democracy and citizenship in the United States—into the disciplinary realm of cinema and media studies. This approach constitutes an intervention for the field, as analyses of neoliberalism within cinema and media studies have tended to approach the topic from an industrial standpoint. Ultimately, the dissertation seeks to begin answering the question: How is democracy porn symptomatic of the erosion of possibilities for democracy within the context of neoliberalism? iii The dissertation of Alice Elizabeth Royer is approved. African American women have consistently resisted, challenged, submitted to, and remixed racial myths and sexual stereotypes existing in American cinema and television programming. Mainstream film and television practices significantly contribute to the reinforcement of old stereotypes in contemporary black women characters. However, based on the efforts of African American producers like Shonda Rhimes, who has attempted to insert more realistic renderings of African American women in her recent television shows, black women’s representation is undergoing yet another shift in contemporary media.

Recent projects present new design concepts and improvements in artificial intelligence that are oriented to this goal. The expected behaviour of computer-played characters becomes increasingly demanding: proactivity, au- tonomous decision-making, social interaction, natural communication, reason- ing and knowledge management, etc. Our research project explores the possibil- ity for one of these characters to investigate, solving an enigma while dealing with incomplete information and the lies of other characters. In this paper we propose how to manage trust issues when modelling suspicion in the artificial mind of a Columbo-like detective, considering that our desired gameplay is a murder mystery game in which the player plays the role of the culprit. Everyone sees the actor at work, but very few people see the hours of research, the intrinsic skills, the gut instinct that the Casting Director puts into finding just the right person for just the right role. It’s a mix of routine and inspiration which brings the characters we come to love, and sometimes to hate, to the big screen. The Casting Director’s delicate work as liaison between director, actors, their agent/manager and the studio/network figures prominently in decisions which can make or break a project. It’s a job that can't garner an Oscar, but its mighty importance is always felt behind the scenes. And Andrew Bernstein was former first A.D., and now this is, I think this is his second episode that he has directed. JOSH: Right, after 365 days. Great guy, terrific director. And, uh, also very cool to see Alex flexing new muscles and writing an episode. This episode aired on October 16th, 2005. HRISHI: In this episode there are three major story lines which overlap in nice ways. First of all, there is the continuation of the leak. Margaret testifies in front of the senate committee. Everybody's gotten subpoenaed and Leo’s subpoena in particular is going to be very bad for the Santos campaign. The second story line is the Santos campaign. It’s education week and Santos discusses evolution and intelligent design in a way that trips up Vinick. Vinick had been briefed by Mr. Frost in a previous episode who leads us to the third story line which is the assignation of the Palestinian chairman Farad. JOSH: Yes. HRISHI: I thought it was nice the way the three story lines intersected. Sometimes we have talked about how the “A” plots and the “B” plots and the “C” plots don’t necessarily feel like they are relevant to one another at all.

In film, polite conversation is considered bad dialogue, unless it’s witty, sarcastic, or has a unique voice. The reason is that polite chat lacks tension, and tension is the key to dramatic storytelling. As Alfred Hitchcock once said, “Drama is real life with all the boring parts cut out of it.” The key to good dialogue is to understand that it’s not conversation, it’s action. What characters say in a scene should be said to get what they want in the scene. And to determine whether or not your dialogue sounds realistic, read it out loud. Garrison Keillor once advised, “If you read your work out loud, it helps to know what’s bad.” Try it. It works. Dialogue always sounds better in your head. Writing great dialogue can also sell the writer, for those who excel in this area are highly sought after to the tune of six figures per week for dialogue rewrites.
