The Hawks are off to a 2-1 start after winning their first two games over Lehigh and Delaware State before dropping last week’s game against FBS opponent Kent State. The Bucs are 1-2, playing two of the toughest teams at any level in North Dakota State and Florida State with a tilt against Kentucky State sandwiched between. Charleston Southern has owned the first two games of the series, which have been played in downpours each of the last two years. The Bucs used its potent rushing attack to keep the offense off the field while the conference’s top-ranked defense allowed seven points in the first two meetings. This is the first home of three home games for the Blue & White, with Fordham making its first appearance to Monmouth Stadium next week. Monmouth’s bid to open the season 3-0 fell short last week as the Hawks suffered a 27-7 setback to Kent State. The Hawks defense held the Golden Flashes to a field goal in the first quarter and forced a turnover on the first series of the game but the Mid-American Conference member was able to pick up chunks of yardage on the edges and on broken plays while its defensive line controlled the trenches allowing just seven points. Monmouth’s offense has averaged 31 points per game against FCS opponents and features the Big South’s top passing attack. Both redshirt sophomore Cody Williams and RSFR Kenji Bahar at with Williams earning the lions share of the opportunities. Zach Welch and Ed Royds have filled in for injured star running back Lavon Chaney who has missed the last six quarters after being injured against Delaware State. The MU defense, led by safety Mike Basile, is ranked second in the league in rushing defense and third passing efficiency defense. Charleston Southern had a bye week last week after facing FBS juggernaut Florida State in a one-sided 52-8 affair. The Bucs opened up the season with a marquee matchup against No. 1 North Dakota State, giving the Bison all they could handle on national television before falling in overtime to the five-time national champs. Charleston Southern got their first win of the season against Division II Kentucky State, 57-7. In that game the Bucs showed their explosiveness scoring on four plays of 42 or more yards but lost starting QB Kyle Copeland for the season with an injury. The CSU defense, one of the top in the country features All-American DL Anthony Ellis.
