Media Theory and the “Third Spaces of Digital Religion” an essay by Stewart M. Hoover and Nabil Echchaibi This essay assumes that what is needed in scholarship on digital religion is a re-centering of the "object" of digital religious practice into and on its own emergent terms, and that scholars and observers need to find new ways of thinking about and interpreting practice that assumes this re-centering. Our reflections on this are rooted in our own explorations in a research project focused on finding the ways and places that religion is represented, in significant ways, in media cultures2. While we intended to look across all media, "new" and "legacy," it soon became apparent that the digital revolution is so driving the way that media are operating today that we shifted our focus entirely to "the digital." Once we made this shift we decided to cast a wide net. We did not limit ourselves to looking at only those places where "the received religious" was active, expressed, or contested, but instead decided to adapt an aphorism applied to religion (and variously identified with Peter Clarke, Martin Marty, and J.Z. Smith) that points to the categorical inclusion of those things which "...bear a family resemblance to religion...." There is a compelling theoretical reason for this. Buss, Chair David Carlson Teresa McCarty ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY August 2017 ABSTRACT Implementing an assimilative agenda within the traditional U.S. education system has prevented the authentic inclusion, validation, and development of American Indian students. The enduring ramifications, including the loss of cultural identity, underscored the critical need to decolonize, or challenge, the historic assimilative agenda of the school space. The purpose of this action research study was to examine the connection between the cultural exploration activities of Culture Club, cultural identity, and the creation of a Third Space to serve as a decolonizing framework for this Indigenous program conducted within a school space. The epistemological perspective guiding this study was that of constructionism. The theoretical frameworks were post-colonial theory, Indigenous methodology, and, most prominently, Third Space theory. A thorough review of Third Space theory resulted in deduction of four criteria deemed to be necessary for creating a Third Space. These four theoretically-deduced criteria were (a) creating new knowledge, (b) reclaiming and reinscribing hegemonic notions of identity and school, (c) creating new or hybrid identities, and (d) developing more inclusive perspectives. The criteria were employed to create the Culture Club innovation and to determine whether a Third Space was effectively created within Culture Club. -

Casey Abstract Older cities struggling with issues of survival focus on jobs and the economy, but competition requires all cities to pay attention to the quality of life that attracts residents. Creating such an inviting environment includes “third places” that foster community and communication among people outside of home and work, yet we have little empirical evidence that speaks to the subject, or their importance for a community’s quality of life. -

Carr-Chellman Professor of Education Head of Department of Learning and Performance Systems *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School iii ABSTRACT In this ethnographic study, I explored two discussion groups and discovered Third Space elements such as cultural hybridity, counterscript, and sharing of experiences and resources contributed to a safe learning environment existing at the boundaries between participant personal and professional spaces. The groups operated under the auspices of a professional membership organization located in the Washington, D.C. area. One group discussed federal government topics; the second focused on organizational coaching topics, and there were 53 participants among both groups. I incorporated video recorded observations and open-ended interviews. I used open and focused coding techniques to categorize the data. I found that during the meetings participants frequently engaged in collective sense making while contributing experiences and opinions that may have resulted in problems for them had they expressed these experiences and opinions within their workplaces among co-workers or clients.
