Landmarks Preservation Commission March 23, 2010, Designation List 427 LP-2387 THE BRILL BUILDING, 1619 Broadway (aka 1613-23 Broadway, 207-213 West 49th Street), Manhattan Built 1930-31; architect, Victor A. Bark, Jr. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1021, Lot 19 On October 27, 2009 the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation of the Brill Building and the proposed designation of the related Landmark site. The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with provisions of law. Three people spoke in support of designation, including representatives of the owner, New York State Assembly Member Richard N. Gottfried, and the Historic Districts Council. There were no speakers in opposition to designation.1 Summary Since its construction in 1930-31, the 11-story Brill Building has been synonymous with American music – from the last days of Tin Pan Alley to the emergence of rock and roll. Occupying the northwest corner of Broadway and West 49th Street, it was commissioned by real estate developer Abraham Lefcourt who briefly planned to erect the world’s tallest structure on the site, which was leased from the Brill Brothers, owners of a men’s clothing store. When Lefcourt failed to meet the terms of their agreement, the Brills foreclosed on the property and the name of the nearly-complete structure was changed from the Alan E. Lefcourt Building to the, arguably more melodious sounding, Brill Building. Designed in the Art Deco style by architect Victor A. Bark, Jr., the white brick elevations feature handsome terra-cotta reliefs, as well as two niches that prominently display stone and brass portrait busts that most likely portray the developer’s son, Alan, who died as the building was being planned.

Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager opened Studio 54 40 years ago, and it soon became the epicenter of New York City's nightlife for nearly three years. While it lasted, many photographers flocked to the bacchanal to capture the celebrities and other lucky denizens as they danced and snorted and frolicked under that iconic Man in the Moon with the coke spoon sculpture. One of the men on the scene was Gene Spatz, a pioneering paparazzo and street photographer who most people have never heard about. Unlike Ron Galella's work – which has been exhibited and is collected as fine art – after Spatz died in 2003 the archive of images was inherited by his younger sister, Amy Lowen, and packed away in filing cabinets in her Kentucky home. She avoided the task of assessing what she had in her possession for nearly a decade until she began to unearth her brother's forgotten treasures. "While he was working in the late Seventies, I had gotten married, moved to Louisville, Kentucky, and wasn't a part of Gene's day-to-day life," Lowen tells Rolling Stone. "It wasn't until he was gone, and I had brought everything home and put it in storage, that I began to open up these envelopes and discover his work." The black-and-white photographs included scenes from iconic clubs like Studio 54 and Xenon; shots of Carrie Fisher, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Mary Tyler Moore and Robert Redford; as well quirky New York City street life tableaus in the 1970s and Eighties. Lowen recognized some of the celebrities in the photos, but she wasn't sure what exactly her brother's archives contained – or its value to the world.

Summitridge Pictures and RSJC LLC present a film by James Crump. Edited by Nick Tamburri. Cinematography by Robert O’Haire and Alex Themistocleous. Produced by James Crump and Ronnie Sassoon. Sex Fashion & Disco is a feature documentary-based time capsule concerning Paris and New York between 1969 and 1973 and viewed through the eyes of Antonio Lopez (1943-1987), the dominant fashion illustrator of the time, and told through the lives of his colorful and some-times outrageous milieu. A native of Puerto Rico and raised in The Bronx, Antonio was a seductive arbiter of style and glamour who, beginning in the 1960s, brought elements of the urban street and ethnicity to bear on a postwar fashion world desperate for change and diversity. Counted among Antonio’s discoveries— muses of the period—were unusual beauties such as Cathee Dahmen, Grace Jones, Pat Cleveland, Tina Chow, Jessica Lange, Jerry Hall and Warhol Superstars Donna Jordan, Jane Forth and Patti D’Arbanville among others. Antonio’s inner circle in New York during this period was also comprised of his personal and creative partner, Juan Ramos (1942-1995), also Puerto Rican-born and raised in Harlem, makeup artist Corey Tippin and photographer Bill Cunningham, among others. Lower Manhattan in the late 1960s was a cauldron of creative talent, extremely selective, but inclu- sive of and tolerant to the seemingly disparate creative camps that cut a broad swath through culture; music, fashion, the visual arts, film and entertainment.

НАУЧНИ ТРУДОВЕ НА РУСЕНСКИЯ УНИВЕРСИТЕТ - 2009, том 48, серия 6.3 An American writer Ernest Hemingway’s life style and its influence to his creative activity Ruslan Mammadov Abstract: This dissertation work gives a deeper view of the literary style and philosophy of Ernest Hemingway - the American short story writer, novelist, non-fiction writer, journalist, poet, and dramatist. Mainly, it focuses on the connection between the life of Ernest Hemingway and his literary works. He enjoyed life to the fullest and wanted to show that he could do whatever he wanted and it is truly obvious that these facts deeply influenced to his future career, his creativity and private life. This paper examines reflections of the author’s childhood on his works and the effects of women’s special role on his life and creativity and on the moral and ethical relativism of Hemingway's characters. It also studies the importance and the influence of World War I on his short stories and novels. What’s more, it studies his thirst for cultural knowledge which has left indelible signs in all of his works. The aim of this research is to find out essential features of the writer’s literary activity and to explain why the above coupled with the essential messages on the concept of wealth and goodness, portrayed in Hemingway's novels, are some of the reasons why his works have been rendered classics of the American literature. Key words: Ernest Hemingway INTRODUCTION Every man`s life ends the same way. It is only the details of how he lived and how 1 he died that distinguishes one man from another.

The technical possibilities and visual experiences of industrial exhibitions and shopping arcades found analogous applications in museum spaces. As Mackie noted, “Both the retail shop and the public repository are designed for the display of information that is predominantly visual: looking is a means for possession as well as knowledge” (1996: 325). This blurring of commercial and intellectual cultures within the museum continues to create unease and controversy, particularly in the case of fashion exhibitions (Anaya 2013; Gamerman 2014). This chapter investigates how the introduction of fashion—an increasingly important economic and social product in the industrial period—into museums created new connections and tensions between these two worlds. It was because of its position between the disciplines of economy and history that historical fashion entered and was interpreted in museums.
