Repeal of Baseball's Longstanding Antitrust Exemption: Did Congress Strike out Again? INTRODUCrION "Baseball is everybody's business."' We have just witnessed the conclusion of perhaps the greatest baseball season in the history of the game. Not one, but two men broke the "unbreakable" record of sixty-one home-runs set by New York Yankee great Roger Maris in 1961;2 four men hit over fifty home-runs, a number that had only been surpassed fifteen times in the past fifty-six years,3 while thirty-three players hit over thirty home runs;4 Barry Bonds became the only player to record 400 home-runs and 400 stolen bases in a career;5 and Alex Rodriguez, a twenty-three-year-old shortstop, joined Bonds and Jose Canseco as one of only three men to have recorded forty home-runs and forty stolen bases in a 6 single season. This was not only an offensive explosion either. A twenty- year-old struck out twenty batters in a game, the record for a nine inning 7 game; a perfect game was pitched;' and Roger Clemens of the Toronto Blue Jays won his unprecedented fifth Cy Young award.9 Also, the Yankees won 1. Flood v. Kuhn, 309 F. Supp. 793, 797 (S.D.N.Y. 1970). 2. Mark McGwire hit 70 home runs and Sammy Sosa hit 66. Frederick C. Klein, There Was More to the Baseball Season Than McGwire, WALL ST. J., Oct. 2, 1998, at W8. 3. McGwire, Sosa, Ken Griffey Jr., and Greg Vaughn did this for the St.

  • Pries a Bulldog on the Mound by Ryan Reiswig
STANFORD BASEBALL CLIPS April 6, 2011 Pries a Bulldog on the Mound By Ryan Reiswig There’s a defining moment in every great athlete’s career when they perform on level that made them realize they have something special, something that their peers long to experience. For Stanford junior right-hander Jordan Pries, that moment came in his freshman year, 2009. Pries and the Cardinal were facing off against the No. 2 Sun Devils of Arizona State. This game was especially big for Pries not only because of the high-powered offense he was facing, but because of the opposing pitcher as well. Starting that game for Arizona State was Mike Leake, who since that day was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds and became the first player in 10 years to go from college directly to the major leagues. “We had a 2-0 lead, I struck out ten guys that game, gave up two hits in front of like 5,000 people,” says Pries, an Alameda, Calif., native. “It was one of the biggest experiences of my life. I remember having guys at second and third at some point and I got a big strikeout, got a guy to pop-up. I remember thinking, ‘This is awesome.’” The modest and usually calm Pries got so caught up in the moment, he did something out of character. “In college, that was the most emotion I’ve shown on the mound,” says Pries. “I usually don’t fist pump just because I try and stay fairly collected but I remember I gave a few (fist pumps) that game.” Even though the Cardinal ended up losing that game, Pries proved to himself and the rest of the nation that he can pitch against the best.

  • The Legend of Big Klu Still Lives Large
Fifty years later: The legend of Big Klu still lives large By Paul Ladewski Staff Writer Posted June 9, 2009 The area once referred to as Argo is located eight miles west of old Comiskey Park, a decidedly blue‐collar town known for a corn milling and processing plant that is among the largest of its kind. As the barely 10,000 residents would tell you, it has the odor to prove it, too. But to many Chicago baseball fans, especially those on the South Side, the location is known for something of far greater significance. It also was home to Ted Kluszewski, the 6‐foot‐ 2, 225‐pound mountain of a man with the famous 15‐inch biceps, whose legend in White Sox history will live even longer than the home runs he hit decades ago. “I remember the first time that I saw Ted in those cut‐off sleeves," former White Sox pitcher Billy Pierce still recalls his trademark style nearly a half century later. "They were good‐sized. He was a big man. A big man." Says Bill "Moose" Skowron, the former White Sox and New York Yankees first baseman who crossed paths with Big Klu many times in their careers. "Everybody knows Ted could hit a baseball. What some people don't know is that he was a helluva first baseman and a helluva nice guy, too. And he always played in those short‐sleeve shirts. He was built like a rock, you know." How can the South Side of Chicago ever forget? There Kluszewski will forever be remembered as one of the greatest Brinks jobs in White Sox history, a local boy who made very, very good one unforgettable season.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings February 23, 2017 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1995 - Kevin Mitchell signs a contract to play for the Daiei Hawks in Japan. Mitchell spent three seasons with the Reds, batting .332 with 50 doubles, 55 home runs and 167 RBI MLB.COM 'Breaking' news: Cingrani develops cutter Reds lefty works in offseason to add another pitch offering By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com | @m_sheldon | February 22nd, 2017 + 50 COMMENTS GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Reds left-hander Tony Cingrani can throw his four-seam fastball 95 mph, and consistent with his career, he used it often in 2016. It was so often that PITCHf/x data showed he threw his fastball more than 87 percent of the time. Cingrani started using a split-fingered fastball sometime in the second half, but he realized it was time to diversify the repertoire even more. He needed a breaking ball and used the offseason to develop a cut fastball. "It's just another way to get guys out," Cingrani said. "It gets hitters off thinking it's just going to be a fastball. I'm still trying to work on how I want that ball to move, but it's good and feels comfortable." At the suggestion of teammate and fellow reliever Caleb Cotham, Cingrani traveled to Kent, Wash., in the fall and worked out at Driveline Baseball. The facility, owned by Kyle Boddy, has gained a reputation for providing data-driven pitch training and also encourages building arm strength by playing catch with weighted balls. "Caleb is a pretty smart cat," Cingrani said.
