The city has a strong underlying economy, and there are many indicators within the 2016 AMR which show significant improvement and suggest that Manchester is continuing to make substantial progress to achieve the sustainable development goals set out in the Local Plan. Development that supports economic growth has remained at a high level, with 120,000 sqm of employment related floorspace being completed over the past year, a significant proportion of this is in the Regional Centre, which remains the main employment location and economic driver of the City Region. -

PRESS RELEASE UNDER EMBARGO UNTIL 00:01, THURSDAY 8 APRIL 2021 THE NATIONAL GALLERY ANNOUNCES SIX SHORTLISTED DESIGN TEAMS FOR ITS NG200 PLANS The National Gallery has today (8 April 2021) announced six shortlisted design teams in its search for a partner to work with it on a suite of capital projects to mark its Bicentenary. An initial phase of work will be completed in 2024, to mark the Gallery’s 200th year. The shortlisted teams are: • Asif Khan with AKT II, Atelier Ten, Bureau Veritas, Donald Insall Associates, Donald Hyslop, Gillespies, Joseph Henry, Kenya Hara, and Plan A Consultants • Caruso St John Architects with Arup, Alan Baxter, muf architecture/art and Alliance CDM • David Chipperfield Architects with Publica, Expedition, Atelier Ten, iM2 and Plan A Consultants • David Kohn Architects with Max Fordham, Price & Myers, Purcell and Todd Longstaffe‐Gowan • Selldorf Architects with Purcell, Vogt Landscape Architects, Arup and AEA Consulting • Witherford Watson Mann Architects with Price and Myers, Max Fordham, Grant Associates, Purcell and David Eagle Ltd The shortlist has been drawn from an impressive pool of submissions from highly talented UK and international architect-led teams. In addition to members of the executive team and Trustees of the National Gallery, several independent panellists are advising on the selection process, which is being run by Malcolm Reading Consultants. These are Edwin Heathcote, Architecture Critic and Author; leading structural engineer Jane Wernick CBE FREng; and Ben Bolgar, Senior Design Director for the Prince’s Foundation. The extremely high quality of the submissions led the panel to increase the number shortlisted from the originally envisaged five, to six. -

Twelve months pass so quickly and Donald Insall Associates continues to build on the legacy of our past, with its customary creative energy, passion and analytical vigour; we look forward to celebrating our 60th Anniversary in 2018. We work hard to maintain a continuity of approach, even in changing times, learning from our collective experience and particularly from our pioneering colleagues of the early days of our Practice. For me, researching the 50th anniversary of the Civic Amenities Act in 1967 has revealed just how young the conservation movement is and how central in debate, influence and philosophy was Donald Insall Associates. It is pleasing to look back on a year and reflect that the quality of our work continues to shine through and that we continue to grow and develop. The Insall name is now also established in the great cities of Birmingham and Manchester; a personal highlight has been to see our teams taking root in both wonderful places. -

Acknowledgements I was inspired to write about the two print collections while working in the Art Section at the Australian War Memorial. The many striking and varied prints in that collection made me wonder about their place in that museum – it being such a special yet conservative institution in the minds of many Australians. The prints themselves always sustained my interest in the topic, but I was also fortunate to have guidance and assistance from a number of people during my research, and to make new friends. SDC Sustainable Communities Review Manchester Visit Sustainable Communities Policy Review – Manchester/Salford [Evidence collated from an SDC visit, Audit Commission Manchester Salford Pathfinder reports (2003 & 2006) and materials provided by Urban Splash.] Headlines • The Pathfinder proposes a net increase of 22,500 homes in its area over the next 13 years • There is significant coordination between funding streams to support delivery • Key challenges include addressing the wider causes of housing market failure (including the attractiveness of local environments, crime levels and the quality of local public services like schools) and encouraging owner occupation, especially given low wages, recent rises in house price levels, and the continuation of buy to let and speculation on the capital values of new homes Context The Manchester Salford Pathfinder sits at the core of the Greater Manchester conurbation as the regional centre of the North West, encompassing areas surrounding the city centre. 40% of all homes within the Manchester and Salford local authority areas fall within the Pathfinder. The Pathfinder area has been divided into four Area Development Frameworks (ADFs) – Central Salford, East Manchester, North Manchester and South Manchester. The intervention area covers 19 of Manchester’s 33 wards and 8 of Salford’s 20 wards. The structure of the Pathfinder’s housing stock is distinctive – only 36% of residents own their own homes compared with the national average of around 69%. The Pathfinder area has an oversupply of older, smaller terraced housing and flats that have declined in value leaving owners in negative equity. Just over half of residents who rent their homes do so from the two local authorities, but private landlords and housing associations also provide very large numbers of homes for rent. -

7 Manchester’s Historic Character – Analysis and Recommendations 7.1 Unenclosed land broad type Figure 4 The area of the former Shadow Moss is indicated by the distinctive field boundary patterns depicted on OS 6” 1 st edition mapping of c1882 Description This character type comprises areas that are currently of low economic value and where there is little or no settlement. It includes marginal land such as open mossland and marsh, and other unimproved land which may nonetheless be exploited, such as common land, pasture and moorland. Unenclosed land only occurs in Manchester district as a previous type. 7.1.1 Open moorland Description and historical context Moorland does not exist as a current type within the Manchester landscape; it appears as a previous type only in the Baguley Moor area. Some areas of the former moorland have not been developed and although their character has changed, they may still contain palaeoenvironmental and archaeological evidence. 27 For example, the playing fields associated with Brookway High School (HLC Ref HGM13548) and the playing fields east of Church Stoke Walk (HLC Ref HGM13842) have both been enclosed from farmland that was formerly moorland. 7.1.2 Mossland Description and historical context Although there is no surviving untouched mossland in Manchester, there were several mosses in the district in the past. Mossland has thus been recorded as a previous rather than a current character type. Like the upland moors, the former lowland mosses were probably enclosed at a relatively late date. The three main former mosses in Manchester are Hough Moss in the area which is now Moss Side and Whalley Range; Shadow Moss, near Moss Nook and Manchester Airport in the south of the district; and White Moss, near Charlestown in the northern part of the district. -

It helped perhaps that he always enjoyed acclaim, for his many book illustrations and his ceramic designs, as well as for his paintings. But it was also a matter of temperament. He loved dancing, tennis and pub games, was constantly whistling, and even in the mids found little time for politics, working up only a mild interest in the international crisis or the latest Left Book Club choice. He was, by all Ravilious: The Watercolours, excellent company. Cheerfulness kept creeping in. His delight in the world informs his work. Alan Powers, probably the greatest authority on the artist, has written that "happiness is a quality that is difficult to convey through design, but Ravilious consistently managed to generate it". And David Gentleman has remarked that Ravilious Ravilious: The Watercolours "an easy artist to like". His woodcuts for books and vignettes for Wedgwood the alphabet mug, the boat-race bowlare regularly described as witty and charming. And many of his watercolours, too, attract such epithets as "friendly". Much of his subject-matter Ravilious: The Watercolours pastoral and unassuming, and he was a virtuoso at capturing everyday scenes and little details from English provincial life. Among the sequences of his paintings were those featuring, Ravilious: The Watercolours his words, "lighthouses, rowing-boats, beds, beaches, greenhouses". Even when he became an official war artist, he tended to domesticate any novelty or threat — fighter planes line up harmlessly beyond a garden hedge, and barrage balloons bob cheerfully in the sky. -
