PIAA BOYS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS (1920-2020) TEAM CHRONOLOGIES Beginning in 2016-2017, PIAA grouped boys’ basketball in six classifications – 6A, 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A, and 1A. The number and designation of classifications have changed several times throughout the years. Here is the chronology of the classifications: 1920 through 1944: One classification, historically called Class A 1945 through 1950: Two classifications, the larger called Class A and the smaller called Class B 1951 through 1983: Three classifications The largest was called Class A from 1951 through 1975, then rebranded Class AAA from 1976 through 1983 The middle class was called Class B from 1951 through 1975, then rebranded Class AA from 1976 through 1983 The smallest class was called Class C from 1951 through 1975, then rebranded Class A from 1976 through 1983 No Class C state championship games were conducted from 1948 through 1950. The first official PIAA Class C Boys Basketball championship game was conducted in 1951 1984 through 2016: Four classifications The largest was called Class AAAA, the second-largest Class AAA, the third-largest Class AA and the smallest Class A from 1984 through the 2015-2016 school year. 2017 forward: Beginning in the 2016-2017 school year, PIAA expanded basketball to six classifications. Those classifications are identified as 6A, 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A. PIAA has decided as a matter of consistency to rebrand the historical classes from the first tournament in 1920 through 1983. As a result, the largest class is designated as Class 3A, the second-largest as Class 2A and the smallest as Class 1A. From 1984 through 2016, the designations Class 4A, Class 3A, Class 2A and Class 1A are used. NOTE: Allentown’s 1946 and 1947 AAA titles were vacated when it was discovered post-tournament that the school had used an ineligible player both years. PIAA has ruled that while the titles were vacated, the results of Allentown’s 1946 and 1947 PIAA playoff games will stand. The titles were vacated administratively; therefore the games played by Allentown in 1946 and 1947 are recorded as wins and losses. Such games are noted below by an asterisk (*).
