A brief historical account, data on the distribution, a comparative analysis of the island diplopod faunas, and zoogeographical notes are given. Introduction The Russian Far East includes archipelagos and islands off the western coast of the northern Pacific and the islands off the Chukotka at the border between the East Siberian and Chuckchee seas (see Map 1). The most known among them are the islands of the Primorsky Province in the Sea of Japan, Sakhalin Island, the Kurile Islands, the Wrangel, the Commander, Shantarskie islands and Karaginsky Island. Knowledge of the millipede fauna of the islands of the Russian Far East is still incomplete. Some of the islands of the East Siberian and Bering seas, the Sea of Okhotsk have hitherto remained unexplored. However, it is possible to surmise that these islands are devoid of diplopods or that their millipede fauna is extremely poor. The Wrangel Island seems to be totally devoid of Diplopoda; at least, large long-term (within 12 years) materials on Wrangel invertebrates contain neither millipedes nor centipedes (Khruleva 1987, Stishov 2006). -

Of the 145 myriapod species currently documented, 40 species are not native to Canada. The myriapods have not been well documented with DNA barcodes and no barcodes are avail- able for Pauropoda. It is conservatively estimated that at least 93 additional myriapods species will be dis- covered in Canada: Chilopoda (40), Diplopoda (29), Pauropoda (17), and Symphyla (seven). -

21 Chapter 2 Myriapoda and Terrestrial Isopoda of the Prairies of Canada Bruce A. Snyder Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS, USA Abstract. Myriapods and terrestrial isopods play important roles in numerous ecosystem processes, especially decomposition, and in the structure of soil food webs. This chapter discusses fi ve focal taxa, specifi cally the terrestrial Isopoda (commonly known as pill bugs, sow bugs, roly-polys, woodlice, or slaters) and the four classes of the Myriapoda: Diplopoda (millipedes), Chilopoda (centipedes), Pauropoda, and Symphyla (sometimes called garden centipedes). After a brief review is given for each taxon’s phylogenetic position, global diversity, and ecological role, current knowledge of species diversity in the Canadian prairies is summarized. Biodiversity of these fi ve groups is relatively low in the prairies of Canada. Terrestrial isopods have yet to be discovered in Alberta, Saskatchewan, or Manitoba. Diplopoda are represented by 10 species, while six species of Chilopoda are known or suspected from the prairies. The Canadian pauropod fauna consists of two species that may be present in the prairies. Twenty-three species of Symphyla are known elsewhere in Canada, but none are known from the Prairie Provinces. Little research on these taxa has been done in this region and much remains to be discovered, likely including species that are new to science. In addition to diversity and distribution studies, future research directions should include studies of the biology and ecology of these species. Résumé. Here we describe the seasonal variation of the macroarthropod community associated to Til- landsia carlos-hankii Makuda (Bromeliaceae) in a deciduous forest located at “Petenera”, Santa Catarina Ixte- peji, Oaxaca, Mexico. Eight T. carlos-hankii specimens were collected during the wet season and 10 during dry season. We recorded 874 macroarthropod individuals, belonging to one phylum, four classes, 17 orders, 60 families and 81 morphospecies. The richest order was Araneae (21 morphospecies), from which Salticidae (4 spp.), Staphylinidae (4 spp.) and Lygaeidae (4 spp.) were the most abundant families. -

Checklist of the Millipeds of North and Middle America 3
Introduction Wenn sich die Weisen nicht zuweilen verirteten, so m ssten alle Narren versagen. .Johann Wolfgang von Goethe I may freely, without shame, leave some obscurities to happier industry, or future information. .Samuel Johnson Checklists and catalogues are regarded with disdain by some biologists who consider them mere hackwork, compiled from literature and devoid of phylogenetic insights. Systematists who are actually involved in transferring knowledge about the characteristics, relationships, and distribution of poorly-known organisms from the alpha to gamma level (thus making it accessible to theoreticians) tend to be more generous. There are no references more fundamental than comprehensive summaries of current knowledge, and the efforts of assembling and organizing information from a vast polyglot literature into a compact and manageable form are highly appreciated by subsequent users. A checklist or catalog is often the catalyst that initiates or stimulates active interest in some neglected taxon, and whether one concurs with the details of presentation is immaterial so long as all the facts are available. It is often overlooked that the basic purpose of such compendia is to facilitate their own obsolescence. An increasing interest in tropical biotas during the past several decades allows a guarded hope that the importance of millipeds in such ecosystems will be recognized and investigated. Although three annotated checklists have been published (West Indies: Chamberlin, 1918; North America: Chamberlin & Hoffman, 1958, and Middle America: Loomis, 1968 respectively), they are now obsolete and inadequate. As the faunas of these regions are now amenable to a revised treatment, this occasion is taken to provide a comprehensive, updated, summary of the diplopod fauna of the entire area north of the South American mainland.
