RESOLUTION 2011 TOUR FOR LIFE WHEREAS, North Shore Animal League America.is the world's largest no-kill rescue and animal adoption organization saving almost 1,000,000 lives; and WHEREAS, North Shore Animal League America's innovative programs provide education to reduce animal cruelty and advance standards in animal welfare; and WHEREAS, beginning Saturday, March 19th, North Shore Animal League America, in partnership with Purina® and The American Mutt-i-grees® Club, launched its annual month-long national life-saving adoption event, Tour For Life; and WHEREAS, during the Tour For Life, two mobile adoption units are traveling simultaneously across the country and partnering with more than 100 shelter and rescue groups in 37 cities in 19 states; and WHEREAS, these "shelters on wheels" will cover over 13,000 miles and help save the lives of thousands of animals across the country through humane education and mobile adoption events; and WHEREAS, this year, country music icon Wynonna Judd is serving as the national spokesperson for the 11th annual Tour for Life; and WHEREAS, over the past decade, the Tour for Life has helped place hundreds of thousands of homeless animals with loving families throughout the country; and THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that by adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council joined by the Mayor, City Attorney and the City Controller acknowledges North Shore Animal League America, Purina® and The American Mutt-i-grees® Club for continuously promoting the advantages of adopting shelter animals and the significance of saving a life. PRESEN1ED BY~TONY RDENAS Cr~J ADOPTED Counc1 member, 6th D1stnct MAR 1 S 2011 SECONDEDBY ~ ALL ELECTED OFFICIALS MAR I 8 2011 CITY OF LOS ANGELES RESOLUTION Tom McConville WHEREAS, Tom McConville and his wife, Joan, arrived in Los Angeles, California, in 1958; and, WHEREAS, Tom McConville, before leaving Ireland, played defense for County Armagh in the All Ireland Minor Football Championship League in 1949-1950, and won a gold medal when his team beat Kerry by 2 points, a record that was not broken for 60 years; and WHEREAS, Tom has served the Irish and Irish-American community in Los Angeles for more than 40 years; and WHEREAS, Tom has unfailingly demonstrated his dedication and commitment to supporting the Irish and Irish-American community as host of the Irish Hour on KIEV 870-AM for more than 35 years; providing updated news from Ireland, and local Irish news and events in Los Angeles County, and WHEREAS, Tom, as President and founder of the Irish Center of Southern California, Inc., continues to support and promote Irish culture in Los Angeles County; and NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of Los Angeles hereby commends TOM MCCONVILLE, for his excellent service and dedication to the Irish and Irish-American community and to the people of Los Angeles. SECONDEDBY' ~~ Councilmember, 4th District ADOPTED MAR 1 8 2011 lOS ANGElES CITY COUN.Cil MAR l 8 7" • '- ,, 11 RESOLUTION WHEREAS, CAPTAIN II ADDISON BIRDINE, retired from the LOS ANGELES FIRE DEPARTMENT effective March 4, 2011; and WHEREAS, CAPTAIN BIRDINE was appointed to the LOS ANGELES FIRE DEPARTMENT on December 14, 1980 and has served selflessly and professionally for over 30 years in the following positions: Firefighter December 14, 1980 Inspector I November 23, 1986 Inspector II January 28, 1990 Captain I March 6, 1994 Captain II August 2, 1998 WHEREAS, CAPTAIN ADDISON BIRDINE achieved success in these challenging assignments and faithfully served the City of Los Angeles at Fire Stations 58, 43, 92, 4, 65, 64, 68, 61, 94, Valley Industrial Commercial Unit, Central Public Assemblage Unit, Underground Tank Unit, Building Standards Unit, Legal Liaison Unit, Recruit Training and as a member of the (Proposition F) Bond Education Team; and WHEREAS, CAPTAIN ADDISON BIRDINE, during his service to the LOS ANGELES FIRE DEPARTMENT, dealt with countless emergencies, disasters and noteworthy events, including the 1983 Century City Twin Towers Fire, 1984 Westwood Multi-Casualty Incident, Westward Ho Market Fire, Central Library Fire, Calabasas Brush Fire, 1992 Los Angeles Civil Disturbance, 1993 Chatsworth Brush Fire, 1994 Northridge Earthquake, 1995 Malibu Brush Fire and Palomar Hotel Fire; and WHEREAS, CAPTAIN ADDISON BIRDINE earned the admiration and respect of his peers and· supervisors through his dedication and commitment to the fire service and the LOS ANGELES FIRE DEPARTMENT: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that, by adoption of this resolution, the Mayor joins the Los Angeles City Council in commending Captain II Addison Birdine for devoted, loyal and invaluable service; thanks him for providing professional expertise and knowledge benefiting the people and communities of the CITY OF LOS ANGELES; and hereby extends best wishes to Captain II Addison c;:) Bi<dloo fo<" hooliliy, hoppy eod rew.rolog '"7J< :tll ADOPTED Pre=<edby PA~K~J2' § MAR 1 S 2011 :;;:: lOS ANGElES CiTY COUNCil ):> MAR 1 8 2011 Socooded by /1d £1 r- RESOLUTION Marla Gibbs Whereas, Marla Gibbs, an eight time recipient of the NAACP Image Award has provided countless hours of entertainment to people around the world through her memorable television roles in; The Jefferson's, 227 and The Hughley's, we honor her with this tribute; and Whereas, Marla Gibbs has provided "Marla's Memory Lane" as a venue in the Los Angeles Community, for entertainers to showcase their talent, receive mentoring and networking with others in the entertainment industry we salute today. Whereas, Marla Gibbs' vision to create the "The Vision Theater" as place for community theater, acting, dancing and performers to display their talent to the Los Angeles Community has helped to launch the careers of many who are successful today. Whereas, Marla Gibbs has always given back to the community, with her unselfish generosity, concern for others and love for helping others to harness their God given talent, we honor her today. RESOLUTION Palos Verdes Chapter The Links, Incorporated WHEREAS, the Palos Verdes Chapter of The Links, Incorporated celebrated over a quarter of a century on March 12, 2011; and WHEREAS, the Links, Incorporated is one of the oldest and most prestigious African American Women's national organization known for their compassion and loving volunteer group members. Since its inception, in 1946, their mission has been to promote civic involvement, educational opportunity, civic welfare of the disadvantaged and cultural interests. Through their efforts many disadvantaged youth have found mentors and role models; and WHEREAS, the Palos Verdes Chapter of The Links, Incorporated was founded in 1982. The diverse group includes women from various professions including: business, law, education, stay at-home-mothers, medicine, and community leaders; and WHEREAS, the 100% volunteer organization spearheaded a multifaceted, award winning program called Project Life, that has provided enrichment and motivational activities for hundreds of youth throughout the South Bay. Project Life enrolls youth as early as the seventh grade and follows them through their college and career life; and WHEREAS, the Palos Verdes Chapter of The Links, Incorporated has partnered with SRO Housing Corporation, to help further their mission of providing housing and supportive services to the Skid Row community: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by adoption of this resolution the Los Angeles City Council does hereby congratulate the Palos Verdes Chapter of The Links, Incorporated on celebrating over a quarter of a century of accomplishments; and extends best wishes as it continues to inspire and thrive. Adopted: March 18,2011 Janice Halm ADOPTED MAR 1 8 2011 Seconded by: lOS ANGELES GHY COUNCil All Councilmembers CITY OF LOS ANGELES RESOLUTION Gordon Sherwood WHEREAS, Gordon Sherwood was born March 22, 1911 in a home on Bunker Hill, California and he lived most of his life in Los Angeles County. Gordon is an extraordinary centenarian and has been a major contributor to the Los Angeles region throughout his life; and WHEREAS, Gordon Sherwood was a graphic artist by trade and a mechanical engineer by heart, after graduating from the Schevard Art Institute Art Guild Academy. He began his life-long career with the advertising agency of the day, The Tabery Corporation in Los Angeles; and WHEREAS, there he worked on campaigns for companies such as Chevrolet, Ralphs Groceries, Lockheed, and IBM among others. In addition, he was a pioneer in developing what has evolved into today's auto show industry and he spent several years as a graphic artist for Howard Hughes at the dawn of jet propulsion, putting his technical and artistic talents to work to visually explain how jet engines worked; and WHEREAS, Gordon Sherwood first love was his beloved wife Donna Sherwood, whom he met when he was just 11 years old. Gordon and Donna were married in 1939 had a very happy and fulfilling life together. Sadly, Donna passed in 2003, and while heartbroken, he continues to stay busy, feisty and enjoy his life; and WHEREAS, Gordon Sherwood second love is trains. Gordon is a founding member of the Los Angeles Live Steamers, a railroading hobby club in Los Angeles. Building and running scaled steam locomotives has always been a passion for Gordon and he spent many years building three locomotives in his meticulous workshop at his home in Burbank, and helping to establish the LALS facility, located in Griffith Park, California, now in its 57th year of operation; and WHEREAS, Gordon Sherwood enlisted in the Army.
