Introduction Approximately 17 cubic feet The Metropolitan Community Church of Greater St. Louis was founded on October 28, 1972, with a primary mission of spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the gay and lesbian community of St. Louis. Materials include administrative files, publications, artifacts, correspondence, and conference materials, which reflect many of the activities of the church and some of its members since its founding, as well as information concerning the gay and lesbian community in St. Louis. Donor Information The records were donated to the University of Missouri by a representative of the Metropolitan Community Church of Greater St. Louis no June 28, 1978 (Accession No. SA2043). The CoH is currently the largest church in the world with a predominantly gay and lesbian congregation. This work tells the history of the church which is located in Dallas, Texas. The thesis employs over 48 sources to help tell the church’s rich history which includes a progressive Christian philosophy, an important contribution to the fight for gay civil rights, and fine examples of courage through social activism. This work makes a contribution to gay history as well as civil rights history. It also adds to the cultural and social history which concentrates on the South and Southwestern regions of the United States. The historical acts of cultural appropriation enacted by the LGBTQ subculture radical faeries of indigenous peoples are intended for healing. However by investigating contemporary radical faerie culture in Thailand, it is found that colonial culture fundamentally defeats queer liberatory movements from within. Primary data was collected through cyber-ethnographic methods and consists of a photo archive and several online blogs and associated websites. Analyzes emerged through Visual Grounded Theory methodology. This study provides evidence of globalizing colonial discourse and the resulting ineptitude of radical faerie activism. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS During my eight years at Colorado State University I have become intimately involved with the Department of Ethnic Studies and its faculty. Chiang1 Princeton University On the Historiographical Politics of Queer Sexuality: Thinking across the Post-Colonial and LGBTQ2 Subjects of History Introduction Opening up the ‘archive’ of the historiography of sexuality, one immediately confronts a striking paradox: if so many historians nowadays acknowledge the ‘social constructionist’ nature of (homo)sexuality, why does a body of literature called ‘gay and lesbian history’ or ‘queer history’ still exist?3 Alternatively put, if sexuality is indeed widely recognized as ‘socially constructed’ across time and place, why are historians still assuming a core set of essential qualities that unite all those historical scholarships categorised under ‘gay and lesbian history’ or ‘queer history’, or even the ‘history of sexuality’? One might recall here David Halperin’s remark: ‘Once upon a time, the very phrase “the history of sexuality” sounded like a contradiction in terms: how, after all, could sexuality have a history? Nowadays, by contrast, we are so accustomed to the notion that sexuality does indeed have a history that we do not often ask ourselves what kind of history sexuality has’.4 In this paper, I wish to first and foremost respond to this important question by turning to the subaltern studies project and post-colonial historiography. My discussion begins with applying subaltern and post-colonial theory to my concerns about the essentialising tendencies of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) historiography. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com One of the earliest American gay movement (or homophile) organizations, the Mattachine Society began in Los Angeles in the winter of 1950. It was formed by Harry Hay, a leading gay activist and former Communist Party member, along with seven other gay men. The name refers to the Société Mattachine, a French medieval masque group that allegedly traveled from village to village, using ballads and dramas to point out social injustice. The name was meant to symbolize the fact that "gays were a masked people, unknown and anonymous." By sharing their personal experiences as gay men and analyzing homosexuals in the context of an oppressed cultural minority, the Mattachine founders attempted to redefine the meaning of being gay in the United States. They devised a comprehensive program for cultural and political liberation. In 1951, the Mattachine Society adopted a Statement of Missions and Purpose. This Statement stands out in the history of the gay liberation movement because it identified and incorporated two important themes. First, Mattachine called for a grassroots movement of gay people to challenge anti-gay discrimination; and second, the organization recognized the importance of building a gay community. The Mattachine Society also began sponsoring discussion groups in 1951, providing lesbians and gay men an opportunity to share openly, often for the first time, their feelings and experiences. The meetings were frequently emotional and cathartic. Over the next few years attendance at Mattachine meetings increased tremendously. Soon discussion groups were meeting throughout the United States. -

A glimpse at the history of the U.S. LGBTQ community Part 1 by Valerie Etienne-Leveille LGBTQ is an acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer or questioning (1). The acronym meaning is simple, yet it provides a glimpse to the varied and complex representative groups united in strength and solidarity toward a common cause which is equal rights for all individuals (2). The early LGBTQ Rights Movement Henry Gerber, a German immigrant, founded the first documented gay rights organization in the United States in 1924 (3)(4). The organization founded in Chicago was named The Society for Human Rights. Gerber’s organization published the earliest documented gay-interest newsletter called “Friendship and Freedom” (3)(5). Due to fear of continued harassment and persecution experienced by many individuals, subscription rates to the Friendship and Freedom newsletter were low. Henry Gerber and the members of his organization were not immune to the social and political hostilities occurring during this time. In 1925, Gerber’s organization disbanded because of unwarranted police raids, arrests, and negative media coverage. Activists: Harry Hay (1912-2002) and William Dale Jennings (1917-2000) Harry Hay was an actor, Communist labor organizer, musicologist, theoretician, and political activist (6). He participated in the San Francisco General Strike of 1934 in which the City of San Francisco was shut down when 65,000 workers from all industries walked off from their jobs to demand for more union control toward improved working conditions (7). -

During the summer of 2010, Toronto‟s premier gay magazine Extra expounded criticisms such as these attacking the Toronto Pride Committee, which oversees Toronto‟s annual gay pride parade. The issues at stake: censorship and freedom of speech. During the spring of 2010, a gay political group entitled “Queers Against Israeli Apartheid” (QAIA) sought permission to march under this name in the Toronto gay pride parade, one of Toronto‟s largest annual events. Sensing controversy, Pride Toronto deliberated whether to allow QAIA to march. -

I began the first Swriting with feelings of disappointment and annoyance. A little talk with Fr. Michael and I realized my efforts needed to be more positive. I was suffering from the same feelings that the Trans Community is feeling. On Thursday, November 20th, the GLB community gathered to remember and celebrate the lives of 30 murdered Transgender individuals. But where was the T? Of the four Transgender people that showed up for the Remembrance, two left before the March to the Joan of Arc statue. For more than ten years, Ambush and I have fought for Transgender equality. So when the Transgender com- munity failed to attend the Remembrance it was natural to feel negative. The Transgender community has not supported the Lesbian and Gay community through the Forum or HRC because of their anger at not being included in mission statements or legislation. I find that reasonable. Early Life and Education Hay's parents, both American, met and married in South Africa, where his father Henry Hay, known as Big Harry, was a manager in Cecil Rhodes' mining company. When the birth of their first child was impending, Margaret Neall Hay sailed for England, where their son Henry, Jr., called Little Harry, was born on April 7, 1912 in Worthington, Sussex. The senior Hay saw little of his family for the next two years, but when World War I broke out, he sent for them to join him in Chile, where he had another mining job. After suffering a serious injury on a work site, Hay resettled the family in California. "Big Harry" Hay was harsh, opinionated, demanding, and quick to criticize anything that he perceived as less than perfect in his elder son, from insufficient "manliness" to his grades in school. In later years Hay spoke of his determination to live a life completely different from his father's because of his "personal hatred" for the man. Hay stated that he was aware--however indistinctly at first--of his sexual orientation at a very early age.
