Field work for the three rivers was undertaken between 1995 and 1999 and the Daly River and Roper River Reports were completed in 1998 and 2001 respectively. Further funding for writing up this report has been provided by the Natural Heritage Trust and DIPE, and the Victoria River District Conservation Association (VRDCA) has contributed to the report printing costs. I have handled the co-ordination and management of all aspects of the project since 1995 and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Dealing with the usual staffing issues, time constraints and budgetary concerns was a constant challenge. Developing a suitable assessment method for Northern Territory Rivers was an extremely worthwhile experience, as was the production of a database and report template. Organising and undertaking the field assessment was a challenge in this Top End environment. I was assisted with field surveys and data collection throughout the Victoria River catchment by Mathew Connelly, Brent Whitworth and Jim Cryer. The memorable estuary trip was undertaken with the assistance of Nigel Scullion and Angus Cameron. The helpfulness of everyone throughout the field surveys was extremely appreciated. The great sites and experiences will never be forgotten. Particular thanks to Jane Lloyd (nee Suggit) for letting me tag along on one of her Ausrivas data collection trips with Steve Sly; allowing me to experience my first ride in a Jet Ranger helicopter and taking the time to establish the important link between our two projects. I am extremely grateful to Sally Kirby who took all the collected information and did such a wonderful job in compiling it into this finished report. Judy Faulks I was employed in March 2003 to complete the Victoria River Report and associated maps detailing findings and management issues. It was a challenge checking data and knowing I had to write a report without visiting any of the sites, however having a report template and Judy’s assistance every step of the way has made the whole experience very rewarding and enjoyable. I would also like to thank Caroline Green for her patience and all her help compiling the GIS information and producing the maps for the report. I will also take this opportunity to thank all of the DIPE staff in Katherine for allowing me to work part time from home whilst on maternity leave, and for putting up with Ella on her frequent visits to the office. I have enjoyed working on the project, and hope you are satisfied with the results. Most of the photographs in the report were taken during field surveys; however Annemarie vanDoorne, Patrick Carmody and Royce Sample provided some additional photos which are appreciated. Background information was supplied by various people within DIPE (Darwin), the VRDCA Co-ordinator(s), Parks and Wildlife Services NT (PWS), Timber Creek Local Council and DBIRD. Special thanks to Maria Wauchope for answering endless questions about Gregory and Keep River National Parks. Identification of the large quantity of vegetation samples was carried out by the NT Herbarium (PWS). Support, information and comments were also supplied by a number of other DIPE staff members within the Katherine and Darwin offices. Thanks also to the property owners/managers and Aboriginal communities who allowed access to the survey sites located on their lands and provided background information on the rivers and creeks. Pierce* Abstract A new species of fork-tailed catfish is described on the basis of 31 specimens collected in northern Australia between the Fitzroy River (Western Australia) and the Mitchell River (Queensland). Arius midgleyi sp. novo grows to at least 1.3 m TL and is distinguished from other Australo-Papuan ariids by a combination of charac­ ters including snout shape, barbel length, eye size, tooth arrangement and gill raker number and position. Comparison is made with other ariid species occurring in northern Australian rivers, including the morphologically similar A. leptaspis (Bleeker). Introduction The Timor Sea and Gulf of Carpentaria drainage systems (Lake 1971) approx­ imately represent the Leichhardtian zoogeographic region of Whitley (1947). The rainfall pattern in this region is dominated by the wet monsoon (occurring within the period November to April). Most rivers here traverse a flat coastal plain about 15 km wide before reaching the sea (Lake 1971). These rivers commonly possess wide flood plains and low gradients, often contracting to a chain of waterholes during the dry season; some (Gregory River; Fitzroy to Daly Rivers) have reaches of rapids or very deep gorges. The average annual discharge from this region is 69000 billion litres (Lake 1971), most of it occurring during the wet season. Five of Australia's 18 species of fork-tailed catfishes (Ariidae) are common in this northern region, yet were overlooked by Whitley (1947) and Iredale and Whitley (1938). The members of this family, which is distributed circumglobally in the tropics and subtropics, may inhabit the sea, rivers within tidal influence, or fresh waters.

    Helictite, (2012) 41: 5-14 A History of Cave Exploration in the Judbarra / Gregory National Park Bob Kershaw 15-56 Duke St., Woonona, NSW 2517, Australia Abstract The caves of the Judbarra / Gregory National Park were known to the Aboriginal tribes of the area who used them for art and ritual sites. The initial work by Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife Commission Rangers Keith Claymore and Keith Oliver was followed by the Operation Raleigh Expedition from the UK in 1990, which made the first maps of the caves. Starting in 1991 regular exploration and mapping expeditions by Australian cavers were coordinated by Top End Speleological Society and Canberra Speleological Society. The surveyed passage length of all caves in Judbarra/Gregory National Park is almost 220km and the longest single connected system is the 122km Bullita Cave System in the Central Karst Area.     AUSTRALIAN JOINT COPYING PROJECT THOMAS BAINES Sketches, 1855-57 Reel M397 Royal Geographical Society 1 Kensington Gore London SW7 2AR National Library of Australia State Library of New South Wales Filmed: 1961 BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE (John) Thomas Baines (1820-1875) was born in Kings Lynn, Norfolk, and was apprenticed to a coach painter. In 1842 he emigrated to South Africa and worked in Cape Town as a scenic and portrait painter and he was later an official war artist in the war against the Xhosa tribes in 1850-52. He returned to England to supervise the publication of Scenery and events in South Africa (1852). In March 1855 Baines ailed to Australia to take up the position of artist and storekeeper on the Northern Australian Exploring Expedition led by A.C. Gregory. The party, comprising 18 men and 50 horses, left Sydney in July 1855 on the barque Monarch and the schooner Tom Tough. They sailed through Torres Strait and reached Entrance Island at the mouth of the Victoria River on 15 September 1855. The Monarch then departed for Singapore. From two bases on the Victoria River, Gregory and his companions proceeded to explore the interior. In April 1856 Baines accompanied Gregory and two others on a foray in which the Baines River was discovered. In June 1856 Gregory began a mounted journey to Moreton Bay, sending Baines and a small detachment on the Tom Thumb to Timor to obtain supplies. Baines was forced to sail west to Surabaya to have the boat refitted. The main mast was broken and he decided to abandon the Tom Tough and purchased a brigantine.

Sir—I have the honor to submit to you my report on the affairs of the Northern Territory for the quarter ending December 31st, 1884. PASTORAL OCCUPATION. There can be no doubt that at the present time this, the first established, is the one really progressive interest in the Northern Territory. From causes which are of course well known the development of our waste lands, as of those of our neighbor Western Australia, is proceeding at a very rapid rate. The intelligence from the eastern routes is of large mobs of cattle for the country from Limmen's Bight to the Victoria River. All holders of good country are stocking up to obtain their leases, and lessees are pushing on the development of their runs in order to secure as early as possible a return for their outlay. The fact which very distinctly fronts those who intend to breed extensively on the northern coast of Australia is the necessity of finding a market for their fat stock. It is to be presumed that ultimately large freezing works will be erected, and shipments of carcasses will be made to Europe. But before that is done, the markets of the East will afford an outlet for a large number of live cattle. It is satisfactory to report that, even at this early stage, three markets are being tested. Messrs. Fisher & Lyons have during the past few weeks dispatched a trial shipment of mixed cattle from their Marrakai and Daly Stations to each of the following ports:—Hongkong, Sourabaya or Batavia, and Singapore.

The park is managed jointly by the Traditional Owners and the Parks and Wildlife Commission of the NT. As the second largest national park in the NT, its size, ruggedness and the inaccessibility of much of the park has meant that significant areas of both the Victoria River Gorge and Bullita sections had previously not been adequately surveyed.

    Hugh Young inspected and took delivery of the sheep on Victoria River Downs on January 20th 1894. Gunn then returned to Darwin while Young stayed on to take the sheep overland to Bradshaw.75 Five white men took charge of the sheep and by February or March 1894 the last of them had left VRD. Today one of the few visible signs that there ever were sheep on VRD is a set of rock paintings of sheep in the Stokes Range, on the northern boundary of the station (plate 111 ). From VRD the sheep were first taken to Delamere where about a dozen died from poisoning on the headwaters of Gregory Creek. 76 The sheep had been shorn some time before they arrived on the Gregory (probably while they were still on VRD where men to shear the sheep were available) and the wool was carted to the Depot by James Mulligan.77 From there it was taken by boat to the Dome where it was loaded on Bradshaw's 'steamerette', the 'Red Gauntlet', and shipped to Darwin.78 Probably because of the poisonings that had occurred it was decided that the route to Bradshaw via Gregory Creek was impassable for sheep; they were instead taken the long way around via Delamere, the Flora River and across to the headwaters of the Fitzmaurice River.79 By August 1894, Young had formed a sheep station on the 'open tableland' of the Upper Fitzmaurice, but had 'considerable trouble with the blacks,80 who on at least one occasion attacked the camp.
