www.acadiaathletics.ca 2018 SEASON RECAP

2018 SEASON IN REVIEW:

As host of this year’s National Championship from November 1st to 4th in Wolfville, the Axewomen have an automatic berth to the championship tournament, so much focus was on a conference championship that has alluded them since the 2015 season.

With the return of several key veterans from the 2015 AUS championship team along with seniors from a strong 2017 squad, the Axewomen opened the exhibition season with a 4-1 record, losing only to AUS rival StFX.

Opening the season with lopsided wins over UPEI and Saint Mary’s, the Axewomen faced the StFX X-Women in the first of two regular season meet- ings in week three. In a 36-17 loss in Antigonish against StFX, the Axewomen would regroup for wins against UPEI and Saint Mary’s before facing the X-Women at home for the regular season finale.

The Axewomen pushed out to a 15-0 lead against visiting StFX in the October 14 matchup. The X-Women would eventually take over the lead in the second half and with no time remaining on the clock, Acadia came within two points of tying the match. A missed conversion on the last play of the game gave the X-Women a 22-20 win and first place in the AUS standings.

The Axewomen handed the visiting UPEI Panthers a 55-0 AUS semi-final loss and fell short in winning a conference championship by losing 38-7 to StFX in the AUS Championship game.

www.acadiaathletics.ca 2018 Coaching Staff: Matthew Durant heads into his ninth season as head coach. His Axewomen finished the 2016 and 2017 AUS regular season with 4-2 records and were AUS finalists. The Axewomen have attended the U SPORTS championship for three consecutive seasons beginning in 2015 and have attended four since 2012.

In 2015, Durant led the Axewomen to their first AUS title after knocking off the 17 year reigning champion StFX in Antigonish in a convincing 34-17 win for Acadia’s first women’s rugby AUS championship.

Matt was named the 2010 and 2013 AUS Coach of the Year and was also honoured as the 2013 National CIS Coach of the Year after guiding his Axewomen to a first place finish in the AUS standings.

Matt was the AUS coach of the year in his first season at the helm, and over his nine years as head coach, Matt has posted a 36-16 regular season record and a 9-7 post season record, paying visits to the AUS finals in all his nine seasons.

As a past player of the Valley Bulldogs RFC, Durant captained the Bulldogs to three McCurdy Cup (Nova Scotia Premier Division) championships in 5 years as well as the Maritime Premier Division Caledonia Cup Championship in 2008.

Named as the Nova Scotia Premier Division League Most Valuable Player in 2005, Durant also captained the Nova Scotia Senior Keltics in the Super League for 2 seasons (2006, 2007) during his 10 year tenure with the provincial program. Matthew Durant
