BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

It’s time again for the fall box top contest! Starting Wednesday October 9th I will have each homeroom teacher collect box tops for their classroom. The contest will run for the next two weeks. The last day for them to be turned in and counted for the contest will be October 25th. Please make sure all box tops turned in are cut out around the dotted line otherwise they will not be counted. (Box tops will not accept them if they are not trimmed.) The winners of the contest will receive breakfast in the classroom on Wed. October 30th.

NOTES FROM THE SECRETARIES.

Due to the large amount of children needing ice packs we are running out of zip lock baggies to put them in. If you are willing to donate zip lock baggies to the school that would be much appreciated.

Also if you have not filled out your child’s emergency card please stop by the office and do so. We know some of you may have done this online but we still need the paper form in the school as well as the photo release form.

DESTINATION IMAGINATION

Destination Imagination, or DI, is a team based creative problem solving competition. It is worldwide. It is fun, very challenging, builds teamwork, and develops problem solving capabilities in the participants. During the 2012-2013 school year, Lindbergh did very well in DI. We had four teams. Two progressed to the State Tournament. One of those got 2nd place and thus was able to participate in the Global Finals Tournament along with 1200 other teams from throughout the world.

On Tuesday, October 22, we will have an “Intro to DI” meeting for students and parents. The meeting will be at 6:30 PM in the Lindbergh Library. The purpose is to answer all questions about DI.

After the meeting, we will form teams and begin our creative journey for the year. Teams will select and develop a creative solution to one of six standard challenges. There is a technical challenge, a scientific challenge, a fine arts challenge, an improvisation challenge, a structures challenge, and a community service challenge.

If DI sounds interesting to you, please come to the meeting and find out more.

FRENCH CLUB

There will be a French Club meeting this Thursday, October 10 from 2:30-3:30 p.m.

YEARBOOK MEETING

There will be a Yearbook meeting on Monday, October 21 from 2:30-330 p.m. SUPER SCIENCE WITH MRS. LEPINE-WAHL BY LASHAI CHILDERS-HARRIS, BELLA KONTOS, TRINITY MAUGHAN, JULIANNE MOSER, CHANCE FLEMMING

7th Grade Leaves are blowing, rain is falling… ITS SUPER SCIENCE TIME!!! This month is September along with bits and pieces of October. This September we talked about tools, lab expectations, and labs on processing skills, observing and inferring, and along with much, much more.

One of the projects that we did is an inquiry project. In this project we tested what affected the bounce height of various balls.

We have just finished up properties of matter which are mass, weight, volume, and density. You can find density by mass divided by volume.

Currently we are working on chemical and physical changes and the law of conservation of mass. Physical changes occur when a substance changes from one form to another, but has the same mass (iron to rust). Chemical changes occur when a substance changes completely to another substance (wood on fire to ashes). The law of conservation of mass is the same mass but changes to another form.

We are looking forward to learning about atoms, elements, compound, mixtures, pure substances, heterogeneous, and homogeneous.

8th Grade Did you know that Binary fission is an example of asexual reproduction? Unicellular organisms split into two parts during binary fission. This is part of what the eighth grade had been focusing on at the beginning of the year. The main topic was “What Living Things Share”. We then learned about Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. Darwin figured out theories of how evolution takes place. The eighth grade did a lab on “Genetic Evidence for Evolution”. We had to investigate a method for using DNA to infer how species are related. About a week ago we finished a movie called “How the Earth was made”. It went all the way back to Precambrian Time.

Currently we finished learning about many things such as geologic time and classification of living things. Do you know the 5 levels of classification? There are 4 major eras in the divisions of geologic time. The eighth grade is excited to learn about Earth’s Organisms and we will get into more detailed information about archaea, bacteria, viruses, protists, and fungi followed by many other interesting information.
