Although a Glossary of the Words peculiar to each County of England seems as reasonable an object of curiosity as its History, Antiquities, Climate, and various Productions, yet it has been generally omitted by those persons who have un- dertaken to write the Histories of our different Counties. Now each of these counties has words, if not exclusively peculiar to that county, yet certainly so to that part of the kingdom where it is situated, and some of those words are highly beautiful and of their and expressive ; many phrases, adages, proverbs are well worth recording, and have occupied the attention and engaged the pens of men distinguished for talents and learning, among whom the name of Ray will naturally occur to every Englishman at all conversant with his mother- tongue, his work on Proverbs and on the different Dialects of England being one of the most popular ones in our PRELIMINARY OBSERVATIONS. -

DISASTERS AND MISFORTUNES: THE STORY OF JOHN AND JANE DANIELL by Martin Taylor Introduction On 17th June 1601 John Daniell, the tenant of Hackney rectory, was found guilty by the Court of Star Chamber of what we would now call forgery and blackmail. He was sentenced to a period in the pillory, a term of imprisonment, and a massive fine which led to the confiscation of his property by the Exchequer. This resulted in a ten year trail of inventories, pleas and petitions which has been used to build a picture of Daniell's house in Hackney - the Parsonage House - and the lives lived in it. Perhaps uniquely for a 17th century resident of Hackney, this evidence also tells us a great deal about John Daniell himself, and his wife Jane - their attitudes, aspirations and failures - and on this part of the site we have tried to piece together the circumstances which led to the DanielIs' move to Hackney, and then to their rapid departure. The records of John's trial in Star Chamber and his later law suit against Ferdinando Heybourne (who subsequently bought the lease of the Rectory) give us a great deal of information. The papers relating to the Star Chamber action in the State Papers series are annotated by him, mostly with rather petulant comments refuting the prosecution case. Moreover, to justify his actions he wrote a narrative of his misfortunes, poignantly entitled 'Danyells Dysasters'.' This gives us a rare insight into the thought processes of an Elizabethan gentleman. Throughout this memoir, Daniell represents himself as an injured party who was 'entrapped by double dealing and powerful adversaries'.' Furthermore, we have a similar recital of the story written by Daniell's wife Jane, entitled 'The Misfortunes of Jane Danyell'.' Autobiographical material relating to an Elizabethan woman is even rarer than such material relating to an Elizabethan man. -

Runcorn Local Policing Unit Daresbury & Windmill Hill Newsletter April 2021 Local News Update Welcome to your April 2021 Newsletter for your area It’s definitely getting warmer! Spring is in full bloom and more social restrictions have been lifted just in time! Unfortunately with the warmer weather comes an increase in Anti-Social Behaviour and in particular the use of off-road motorbikes. Runcorn LPU is running Op Scrambler which is dedicated to targeting the users of these anti-social bikes on the streets of Runcorn. We are asking the community to provide us with any information as to the location and storage of any off- road bikes know to ride illegally. April saw Cheshire Constabulary’s Op SCEPTRE – this was a week of action highlighting knife crime and the dangers posed to young persons who carry knives and the consequences involved. The LPU held a range activities including knife sweeps, educational visits & presentations. Plain clothed and uniformed patrols were in your local area targeting known locations and individuals intent on carry weapons or engaging in ASB. Again if you know someone who carries a knife please let us know via Crime Stoppers or calling 101 anonymously. I continue to hold weekly police surgeries, Again I’d like to focus on any Road Safety concerns in your area to be raised to me so we can target our resources effectively. Cheshire East: Developing Emotionally Healthy Children and Young People
CHESHIRE EAST: DEVELOPING EMOTIONALLY HEALTHY CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE The Cheshire East emotionally healthy children and young people partnership is led by Cheshire East council’s children’s services, and is primarily funded from the council’s public health budget. Many organisations have been actively involved in developing the partnership including the NHS’s local clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) and children’s and adolescents mental health services (CAMHS), headteachers, and several vol- untary organisations. As a council senior manager explained: “It’s all partnership working. We work with schools, with the CCG, with health providers, with school nurses, health visitors, early years services, third sector organisations.” As a health lead commented: “It is pretty unique in its nature and scope.” The partnership’s aim is to support children and young people in becoming more mentally resilient: to be better able to manage their own mental health, to pro- cess what is going on in their environment, and to access specialist services should they need them. They want to reduce the number of children and young people attending accident and emergency services, or being inappropriately re- ferred to the CAMHS. The partnership’s original focus was creating ‘emotionally healthy schools’, but they are now extending their reach into early years settings. “We have been really blessed in support from above. We have had investment in to this project year after year. The moral and ethical support is there but also Pinancial.” INITIAL PHASE In 2015 CCGs were required to produce a local ‘children and mental health trans- formation plan’ to implement the NHS’s national ‘Five Year Forward View’ and ‘Future in Mind’ recommendations. -

Its walls, its bridges, its ruined priory, its many churches, its old houses, its almost unique " rows," all arrest and repay attention. The cathedral, though not one of the largest or most magnificent, recalls many names which deserve to be remembered The name of Matthew Henry sheds lustre on the city in which he spent fifteen years of his fruitful ministry ; and a monument has been most properly erected to his honour in one of the public thoroughfares, Methodists, too, equally with Churchmen and Dissenters, have reason to regard Chester with interest, and associate with it some of the most blessed names in their briefer history. ... By John Wesley made the head of a Circuit which reached from Warrington to Shrewsbury, it has the unique distinction of being the only Circuit which John Fletcher was ever appointed to superintend, with his curate and two other preachers to assist him. Probably no other Circuit in the Connexion has produced four preachers who have filled the chair of the Conference. But from Chester came Richard Reece, and John Gaulter, and the late Rev. John Bowers ; and a still greater orator than either, if not the most effective of all who have been raised up among us, Samuel Bradburn.
