Is the Huang et al study from the same river? In such case is should be highlighted and expressed differently. Yes, Huang’s data is from the Rajang. We changed the wording: “DIC concentrations measured during our dry season survey were comparable to those determined by Huang et al. (2017) for the Rajang River (201 µmol L-1 and 487 µmol L-1). Kammen Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory http://rael.berkeley.edu University of California, Berkeley September, 2013 1 Shirley & Kammen – Kampung Clean Energy Capacity August 20, 2013 ABSTRACT In this report, we document the potential for renewable energy resource supply and electricity generation in village communities in Sarawak, Malaysia. This research exercise was done in collaboration with the Sabah-based NGO Land, Empowerment, Animals and People (LEAP), Sabah- based Friends of Village Development or Tonibung and Oregon based NGO Green Empowerment. These groups are currently engaged in rural development and expanding rural energy access in East Malaysia. There are over 600 rural villages (more than 50km from an urban center) in the state of Sarawak. Amongst other issues including the formalization of native customary lands, logging and palm oil concession infringement and urban migration, the common lack of affordable and reliable energy access poses a barrier to development in many villages. A majority of rural villages in East Malaysia are not grid connected and rely heavily on diesel fuel for all electricity and transportation needs. Tonibung and Green Empowerment have been installing micro-hydro systems in Malaysia for over a decade. They have already installed micro-hydro plants in a number of Sarawakian villages including Long Lawen1 and have plans for multiple installations in Baram River villages and the Kelabit Highlands. The results of our current assessment show that Sarawak’s rural economy could benefit greatly from a higher penetration of such renewable energy projects. -

Accessibility and development in rural Sarawak. A case study of the Baleh river basin, Kapit District, Sarawak, Malaysia. Regina Garai Abdullah A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2016 School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand i Abstract To what degree does accessibility to markets correlate with levels of development? This is an important question for those living in remote, underdeveloped parts of Southeast Asia during the final phases of de-agrarianisation. My study recounts the experience of rural-based Iban households living in the Baleh river basin of the Kapit District (population of 54,200) within a day or less travel by river to the small market town of Kapit (with a population of 18,000). With no connecting roads to the rest of Sarawak and reliant almost entirely on river transport, the local economy remains underdeveloped and is losing population. My field work among 20 villages in three accessibility zones of the Baleh river basin was undertaken over the three month period of May-July 2014. Structured interviews were conducted with 20 village headmen (tuai rumah), 82 heads of household, and 82 individuals within the households. Data was also systematically collected on 153 other individuals, including both residents and non-resident members of these bilik-families. My conceptual framework draws on von Thünen’s model of agricultural land use in order to generate expectations about the possible effects of market accessibility. While the sale of vegetables and other commodities accords with expected patterns, most rural households are in fact dependent on other, largely non-agricultural sources of income. -

Tropical peat-draining rivers are known as potentially large sources of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere due to high loads of carbon they receive from surrounding soils. However, not many seasonally resolved data are available, limiting our understanding of these systems. We report the first measurements of carbon dioxide partial pressure (pCO2) in the Rajang River and Estuary, the longest river in Malaysia. The Rajang River catchment is characterized by extensive peat deposits found 5 in the delta region, and by human impact such as logging, land use and river damming. pCO2 averaged 2540 ± 189 µatm during the wet season and 2350 ± 301 µatm during the dry season. Using three different parameterizations for the gas transfer velocity, -2 -1 calculated CO2 fluxes to the atmosphere were 1.5 (0.5-2.0) g C m d (mean, minimum – maximum) during the wet season and 1.7 (0.6-2.6) g C m-2 d-1 during the dry season. -

Distributed Energy Resources for Rural Energy Supply 1.1. Assessing Rural Energy Demand While energy infrastructure can contribute to economic development goals, they differ in potential to contribute to local livelihoods. In discussion of distributed energy scenarios and trade-offs it is important to consider the importance of rural energy access especially in a state where the total rural population is so significant. Scale and localized needs are important considerations in energy planning. Most rural villages in East Malaysia are not grid connected, and rely heavily on high-cost diesel fuel for electricity and transportation. Improved rural energy access has been a key component of energy future discussions, however little quantitative data on demand and potential exists. We conduct a case study in the Baram Basin - the next basin to be flooded for a hydroelectric reservoir - which explores the potential of renewable energy as a bottom-up solution to satisfy the energy needs of these impacted communities. In preparing this study we conducted multiple site visits to 12 villages along the Baram River (see Figure 1). Each village was surveyed using field observation, household energy audits and interviews. At each village we interviewed village leaders, household representatives and held a community meeting. -

Asap in Sarawak, Malaysia. Grund für die Umsiedlung war der Bau eines Staudamms, des Bakun Hydro-electric Projektes (BHEP). Neben den Kenyah-Badeng, wurden weitere 16 Dörfer in der neuen Siedlung angesiedelt. Die Umsiedlung begann 1998 und bereits im darauffolgenden Jahr waren die neuen Langhäuser in Sg. Asap vollständig bewohnt. I. Hintergrund Umsiedlungen als Folge von Bauprojekten oder Infrastrukturmaßnahmen sind keine Seltenheit. In diesem Zusammenhang wird oft argumentiert, dass solche Projekte Arbeitsplätze für die lokale Bevölkerung schaffen und die Entwicklung fördern. Andererseits vertreibt ein solche Projekt die vor Ort lebenden Menschen von ihrer Heimstatt und ihrem traditionellen Lebensunterhalt. Im Kern der vorliegenden Studie steht der Aspekt der Zwangsumsiedlung: die Dorfbewohner von Long Geng siedelten sich ausschließlich wegen des Baus des Bakun Wasserkraftwerks in Sg. Asap an. Dies muss als Zwangsumsiedlung angesehen werden, da die indigenen Gemeinden, die früher in dem für das BHP vorgesehenen Gebiet lebten, keine andere Wahl hatten als wegzuziehen und sich anderswo wieder anzusiedeln, denn ihre Dörfer und ihr angestammtes Land wurden von der Staatsregierung für den Bau des BHP beansprucht.
