ROBINSON1 (Received 30 May 2000; accepted in revised form 25 September 2000) ABSTRACT. Peatlands are a particularly good medium for trapping and preserving tephra, as their surfaces are wet and well vegetated. The extent of tephra-depositing events can often be greatly expanded through the observation of ash in peatlands. This paper uses the presence of the White River tephra layer (1200 B.P.) in peatlands to extend the known distribution of this late Holocene tephra into the Mackenzie Valley, northwestern Canada. The ash has been noted almost to the western shore of Great Slave Lake, over 1300 km from the source in southeastern Alaska. This new distribution covers approximately 540000 km2 with a tephra volume of 27 km3. The short time span and constrained timing of volcanic ash deposition, combined with unique physical and chemical parameters, make tephra layers ideal for use as chronostratigraphic markers. Cet article recourt à la présence de la couche de téphra de la rivière White (1200 BP) dans les tourbières pour agrandir la distribution connue de ce téphra datant de l’Holocène supérieur dans la vallée du Mackenzie, située dans le Nord-Ouest canadien. -

ALLEE: Well, good morning, if you could 3 take your seats we'll get started with this morning's session. 4 It's going to be an exciting one all the way over to Norway and 5 we've got an interesting panel. 6 Just in terms of brief discussions this morning I'd 7 like to thank you for coming again and I thought yesterday's 8 session was really quite good. We got into some great issues 9 at the end of the day kind of talking about some of the things 10 that were concerning people, that's the sort of thing we want 11 to promote, so we're trying to promote dialogue and discussion 12 and that sort of thing. We're going to continue in that vein 13 today so, again, thanks so much for showing up this morning and 14 we'll get started here. 15 I'd like to introduce the moderator of the panel and 16 that is Jessica Shadian. She just recently got her Ph.D. in 17 Political Science and International Relations from the 18 University of Delaware and she's an associate professor at the 19 High North Center for Business at Bodo University in the 20 graduate school there for Business in Norway. This switch caused a lot of change in the lives of NC State students, forcing them to step out of their typical day-to-day routines in favor of something different. Abby Hepp ‘23 took this as an opportunity to go on the adventure of a lifetime-hiking, camping, and climbing her way across the United States! Today, we sit down with her to talk about her cross-country road trip, along with advice and NC State resources that students can use to get outside and craft their own adventures. Glenn Highway Region
Chapter 3: Glenn Highway Region Glenn Highway Region This approximately 581,000 acre region encompasses the Glenn Highway corridor from Palmer out past Eureka to the eastern border of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. It follows the Matanuska River Valley with the Talkeetna Mountains to the north and Chugach Mountains to the south. The communities of Palmer, Sutton, and Chickaloon are within this region. Most of the state land within the western third of this region is within the boundary of the Matanuska Valley Moose Range, a Legislatively Designated Area (LDA). Another LDA within the plan boundary and adjacent to this region is a small portion of Chugach State Park at the southwest corner of the region along the Knik River. Two Public Use Areas (PUA) adjoin the boundary of this region: the Nelchina PUA to the north and the Knik River PUA to the south. The Hatcher Pass management area defines the western boundary. While most of the region is the valley bottom and benchlands of the Matanuska River, the front range of the Talkeetna Mountains, where most of the human use is due to its accessibility from the highway, is also within the region. At the eastern end of the region the land rises to a high plateau and the distance between the Talkeetna and Chugach mountains broadens significantly. Refer to Figure 3-1 to locate the map of a particular area. Distribution and Characteristics There are approximately 331,000 acres of general state land (and state-selected) within this region. This does not include the approximately 122,000 acres in the legislatively designated Matanuska Valley Moose Range (MVMR). -

The obsolete 61foot high dam, built in 1929, may soon be dismantled, allowing salmon to return to the river. EKLUTNA In 1929, the Eklutna River was dammed, forever it seemed. A 61foothigh dam impounded the river about 1 1/2 miles upstream of the old AnchoragePalmer highway. And few manmade things appear to be as immutable as a concrete dam. On a recent hike through the Eklutna River canyon, slipping on boulders coated with brown algae, wading back and forth between the banks to avoid sheer cliffs or deep pools, I considered what it would be like to be a salmon growing up in such a river. Imagine overwintering as one of thousands of translucent, orange eggs buried in the gravels of riffles or deep pools. Maybe I’d hatch into an alevin, become a fingerling and survive another year or two in the frigid water, constantly alert to predators like rainbow trout and American dippers. One day, with a little luck, I’d become a silvery smolt and swim downstream to Cook Inlet. Only there are no salmon in Eklutna River above the old hydroelectric diversion dam. The dam decimated the river’s salmon runs. If you’re a salmon, however, help is on the way. -

Alaska Range Introduction The heavily glacierized Alaska Range consists of a number of adjacent and discrete mountain ranges that extend in an arc more than 750 km long (figs. 1, 381). From east to west, named ranges include the Nutzotin, Mentas- ta, Amphitheater, Clearwater, Tokosha, Kichatna, Teocalli, Tordrillo, Terra Cotta, and Revelation Mountains. This arcuate mountain massif spans the area from the White River, just east of the Canadian Border, to Merrill Pass on the western side of Cook Inlet southwest of Anchorage. 268 NORTH AMERICAN NOTES NORTH AMERICAN NOTES BY KENNETH A. HENDERSON HE year I 967 marked the Centennial celebration of the purchase of Alaska from Russia by the United States and the Centenary of the Articles of Confederation which formed the Canadian provinces into the Dominion of Canada. Thus both Alaska and Canada were in a mood to celebrate, and a part of this celebration was expressed · in an extremely active climbing season both in Alaska and the Yukon, where some of the highest mountains on the continent are located. While much of the officially sponsored mountaineering activity was concentrated in the border mountains between Alaska and the Yukon, there was intense activity all over Alaska as well. More information is now available on the first winter ascent of Mount McKinley mentioned in A.J. 72. 329. The team of eight was inter national in scope, a Frenchman, Swiss, German, Japanese, and New Zealander, the rest Americans. The successful group of three reached the summit on February 28 in typical Alaskan weather, -62° F. and winds of 35-40 knots. On their return they were stormbound at Denali Pass camp, I7,3oo ft. for seven days. For the forty days they were on the mountain temperatures averaged -35° to -40° F. (A.A.J. I6. 2I.) One of the most important attacks on McKinley in the summer of I967 was probably the three-pronged assault on the South face by the three parties under the general direction of Boyd Everett (A.A.J. I6. IO). The fourteen men flew in to the South east fork of the Kahiltna glacier on June 22 and split into three groups for the climbs.
