MOUNT MERCY ACADEMY Presents the 2011 Mcauley Gala Mount Mercy Academy Winter/Spring 2011 HorizonsMOUNT MERCY ACADEMY Presents the 2011 MCAULey GALA... From the President’s Office “I never knew the charm of spring, never met it face to face… April in Paris, chestnuts in blossom… holiday tables under the trees”, croons Frank Sinatra! Ever since my French classes at Mount Mercy with Sister Mary Jane I have longed to see Paris and the lovely French countryside. Although my romantic dream has not yet been fulfilled those littleP arisian-type experiences have become part of my imagination as well as my life experiences. In my mind’s eye I can see La Tour Eiffel, alive with twinkling lights, the beacon of Paris, seen from the riverboat gliding through the evening waters of the River Seine. Versailles and the Louvre have fascinated me for years as I pursued them through books and film. My young fingers labored to master Jacques Offenbach’s “Orpheus in the Underworld” (Can Can) on the piano while my friends attempted the lively and very precise dance, surely unrecognizable as authentic Moulin Rouge! I practiced communicating in the lyrical French language with my pen pal from the village of Maine et Loire, France, and with my French Canadian aunt from St. Regis Falls, NY. Over the years several excursions to French Canada have helped feed my fascination with all things French. Montreal’s Notre Dame Basilica, open on a sunny afternoon for a live indoor/outdoor music festival with Charles Du Toit and the Montreal Symphony was simply heavenly. This was followed by coffee and pastry at a side walk café and shopping in the little boutiques. Equally thrilling was lunch in Quebec City’s monumental Chateau Frontenac looking out over the historical Plains of Abraham. Soon “April in Paris” will become a bit more real and my dreaming will be satisfied once again in this year’s McAuley Gala on April 2nd! I really can’t wait to enter the Parisian ambiance, now in preparation by our decorating committee with little hints beginning to leak out to wet our appetites. See the article on page 3 on how to become involved in “April in Paris.” Join me for this virtual excursion to Paris in April without the hassle of packing suitcases and airport security. We’ll have a wonderful time and who knows, we could find ourselves closer to making aP arisian experience a reality in the near future. See you there! Merci Beaucoup! Graduate School of Business Title STRATEGY TRANSFORMATION AND CHANGE: CHANGING PARADIGMS IN AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC HEALTH AND AGED CARE John Joseph Ryan This thesis is presented as part of the requirements for the award of the Degree of Doctor of Business Administration of the Curtin University of Technology August, 2001 VOLUME 0NE Declaration This thesis is my own work. No part has been submitted for a degree at this or any other university. 2 Acknowledgements Firstly, to my family, thank you for your help and patience. A message to my wife, who put up with a great deal and who typed all of the transcripts: Parkes, my darling, it can only get better from now on! A list of acknowledgements always runs the risk of omitting people whose help and influence have been crucial, or the risk of being boringly long. Unlike the thesis itself, these acknowledgements will risk omissions in the interest of being short. My apologies to those people unfairly omitted. Ivor Davies, of St. John of God Health Care, gave me the idea to research Integration 2000. Francis Sullivan and his staff at Catholic Health Australia made the project possible, invited me to two National Conferences, guided me in setting up the sample and made themselves and their records available on several trips to Canberra. Bruce Callaghan, the consultant who helped the peak body to initiate the process, made his office files available, in his absence, and participated with Francis Sullivan in giving me a preliminary briefing at Sydney Airport. All of the respondents to this research gave freely of their insights and their time, often at considerable personal inconvenience.

  • Annual Report
Catherine McAuley Center for women & children experiencing homelessness ANNUAL REPORT July 2019-June 2020 The Legacy of Catherine McAuley Born into a wealthy family in Dublin, Ireland, Catherine McAuley’s comfortable early life turned upside down when her father died in 1783. She was only five years old. Catherine’s mother managed to maintain a home of relative affluence for her three children by slowly selling off parcels of land, but she too would pass in 1798. Catherine went to live at first with an impoverished uncle and later cousins with whom Catherine clashed over religious convictions. When her mother’s wealthy relatives William and Catherine Callaghan returned from India in 1803, Catherine gladly moved in to manage their elegant home. She lived there for nearly 20 years, providing religious instructions to the Catholic servants and village children and helping the less-privileged in the community find resources to improve their lives. When William Callaghan passed in 1822, he named Catherine McAuley as his sole heir. She used her inheritance to establish a ‘House of Mercy’ on Baggot Street in September 1827. There, she and several companions provided food, clothing, housing, medical care, and education for many of Dublin’s poor women and young girls. Initially, Catherine distinguished herself from nuns and their convents, but in time she came to realize that in order for her work to continue, the House of Mercy would need to become a convent. In 1831, with the approval of Archbishop Daniel Murray, the congregation of Sisters of Mercy was founded. The Baggot Street house served as its first convent.

  • THE EARLY HISTORY of the SISTERS of MERCY INWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA Sister Kathleen Healy
THE EARLY HISTORY OF THE SISTERS OF MERCY INWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA Sister Kathleen Healy Congregation of Sisters of Mercy is the largest English- speaking congregation of religious women in the world. Founded Thein 1831 by Catherine McAuley in Dublin, Ireland, itnumbered thirty thousand sisters within one hundred years. The number of Mercy convents in the United States more than doubles the number of all other Mercy convents in the world.1 The birthplace of the Congregation of Mercy in the United States was not in Dublin, Cork, or Limerick, Ireland's largest cities, but in the small provincial town of Carlow. The first Mercy foundation in the United States was not in New— York, Chicago, St. Louis, or San Francisco. It was in Pittsburgh the population, 25,000; the year, 1843. When the Sisters of Mercy were first established in Dublin, they were severely criticized because they left their cloister daily to care for the poor, the sick, and the uneducated. They were called "the walking nuns" in derision, because they went out among the people to serve them. Their ideal was to be religious who were prayerful and contemplative but also active in the service of their fellowmen. They grew rapidly in numbers because both the church and the society of the mid-nineteenth century were ready for an active-contemplative congregation of women ;because teachers, nurses, and social workers were greatly needed by the people of that era ;and because religious leaders capable of combining personal spirituality with a pioneering spirit of initiative and independence were in demand. No one embodied these qualities more profoundly than Sister Frances Warde, who founded the Sisters of Mercy in Pittsburgh.
