• Mcallister Interview Transcription
Interview with Timothy McAllister: Gershwin, Adams, and the Orchestral Saxophone with Lisa Keeney Extended Interview In September 2016, the University of Michigan’s University Symphony Orchestra (USO) performed a concert program with the works of two major American composers: John Adams and George Gershwin. The USO premiered both the new edition of Concerto in F and the Unabridged Edition of An American in Paris created by the UM Gershwin Initiative. This program also featured Adams’ The Chairman Dances and his Saxophone Concerto with soloist Timothy McAllister, for whom the concerto was written. This interview took place in August 2016 as a promotion for the concert and was published on the Gershwin Initiative’s YouTube channel with the help of Novus New Music, Inc. The following is a full transcription of the extended interview, now available on the Gershwin channel on YouTube. Dr. Timothy McAllister is the professor of saxophone at the University of Michigan. In addition to being the featured soloist of John Adams’ Saxophone Concerto, he has been a frequent guest with ensembles such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Lisa Keeney is a saxophonist and researcher; an alumna of the University of Michigan, she works as an editing assistant for the UM Gershwin Initiative and also independently researches Gershwin’s relationship with the saxophone. ORCHESTRAL SAXOPHONE LK: Let’s begin with a general question: what is the orchestral saxophone, and why is it considered an anomaly or specialty instrument in orchestral music? TM: It’s such a complicated past that we have with the saxophone.

  • ARSC Journal, Fall 1989 213 Sound Recording Reviews
Sound Recording Reviews The Music and Arts Programs of America CD offers the entire broadcast program of January 19, 1952, a typical though not particularly exceptional example of Reiner's work on the radio at this time. His Bart6k "calling card" included the two Rumanian Dances in the orchestration of Leo Weiner (not Tibor Serly, as indicated). He recorded both the Debussy Suite and Ravel's Le tombeau de Couperin music two days later with the same orchestra for RCA Victor, and had previously recorded Til Eulenspiegel with the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra, which included players from NBC. The gem of this present CD is the Ravel Suite, a superb reading of that composer's precise timbre and rhythmic subtlety. Possibly for legal reasons, the orchestra is labelled "The Symphony of the Air," a designation that did not appear until after Toscanini's retirement in 1954. Despite minor pitch problems, the CD transfer is acceptable for its vintage, if only because the RCA Victor recordings of the three principal works are no longer available. Of these recordings from broadcasts, the two most important by far are the Salome and the Walkilre Act II, not only for Fritz Reiner's conducting but also for their exceptional casting. In both releases, the sheer excitement generated by singers and conductor will overcome any sonic limitations. Reviewed by Philip Hart New Reiner CDs Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58 (Recorded Orchestra Hall April 22, 23, 1963); Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 73 (Recorded Orchestra Hall May 4, 12, 1961).

THE MISSING SAXOPHONE: Why the Saxophone Is Not a Permanent Member of the Orchestra by Mathew C. Umble, Committee Member Date ____________________________________________________________ Peter J. Kasvinsky, Dean of School of Graduate Studies Date Abstract From the time Adolphe Sax took out his first patent in 1846, the saxophone has found its way into nearly every style of music with one notable exception: the orchestra. Composers of serious orchestral music have not only disregarded the saxophone but have actually developed an aversion to the instrument, despite the fact that it was created at a time when the orchestra was expanding at its most rapid pace. This thesis is intended to identify historical reasons why the saxophone never became a permanent member of the orchestra or acquired a reputation as a serious classical instrument in the twentieth century. iii Dedicated to Isabella, Olivia & Sophia And to my father Michael C.
