News Update (16th March 2020)

CAMDEN MUSIC FESTIVAL AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL

The Camden Music Festival held at The Royal Albert Hall last week was amazing.

A joyous occasion with many WES students performing. It reinforced what a great place Camden is. A celebration of togetherness and all that can be achieved by working together with commitment and energy. Wonderful.

None of this would have happened without the huge efforts from staff across Camden, committed students and support from parents. Special congratulations to our music teachers, Mr Forbat and Mr Singleton and a big thank you to Mr Pratt and Mr Glover for their support.

Below is a picture that has Bobby D in centre stage singing solo along with an LSU student leading the secondary school choir.

The school twitter feed has better pictures, including Daniel U rapping!

The Year 10 WES Apprentice 2020 has been gradually building since our last News Update with two further challenges set by Lord Harris (aka Mr Harris, Head of Business and Economics Department). There have been announcements throughout each challenge on the school tannoy accompanied by the music used in the TV series to encourage the participants.

Challenge 2 of The WES apprentice 2020. “The Badge Challenge” is on....

The WES Apprentice 2020 candidates are now in teams and have agreed names.

• Schmiffy Assets (?????) • KSI (Knowledge, Strength and Integrity)

Project managers democratically decided.

• Kamil K (10W) • Aaron K (10K)

Second challenge complete: “Badge maker, Badge maker, sell me a badge”.

Both teams - Schmiffy Assets & KSI met the 3:30pm Friday deadline, handed in their:

• Reflection sheets • Receipts for each badge • The overall money

Challenge 3 – 15 candidates Lord Harris sets the challenge to the two teams to design a new educational product for kids aged five to nine for use at home to support their Primary school Education.

The pitch will be five minutes. Candidates are allowed three lunchtimes to research and plan, and one after school session (should they need it). They will then make their pitch to an outside audience.

As ever... One team will win, one team will lose, and within the losing team, someone will be fired.

Click here for the challenge three promo video. https://williamellisschool100056- my.sharepoint.com/:v:/g/personal/lharris102_202_wes_camden_school/ERRd EHlyQ4tFtoV3ZHK8sd4Br2NWRMWTcjiSvChNIJzZDg?e=wdm1oi

The candidates will make their formal five-minute pitch next week after school.

Challenge 3 over. All candidates turned up promptly to the boardroom (room 33), to find out the challenge results..... it was extremely tense.

Both groups performed well and demonstrated some excellent qualities

throughout.... However, there can be only one winner, and that was team Schmiffy Assets, led by Aaron as PM.

• Team Schmiffy Assets raised £49.35 - (initial seed money) £11.00 = £38.35 • Team KSI raised £31.26 - (initial seed money) £11.00 = 20.26.

However, both teams in true Apprentice style, faced fines for misleading consumers.

As a result, 150 NEW badges have been produced and given to Ms Jones as compensation for misleading consumers. Leaving £32.37 overall to be reinvested into future challenges and prize funds.

YEAR 8K BABYWATCHING

8K have been part of the Babywatching project over the last few months.

Babywatching has been developed to encourage students to think about their feelings and about the feelings of others in order to help them sensitively understand what motivates us and to help understand the nature of communication. This ties in with the WES PSHE emphasis on building healthy relationships.

A mum bought her baby Remi (who was only 7 weeks’ old at the start of the project) to their tutorial time, fortnightly, for 20-30 minutes. The boys sat in a circle in the Art Room to watch carefully what the parent and baby did together. The sessions were led by our school counsellor, Emma White, who is trained to lead Babywatching groups, and Ms Madsen their form tutor. Both leaders encouraged the boys to comment on what they saw: playing, comforting, crying, laughing, nappy changing, feeding, interactions between parent and baby. The boys were encouraged to express their thoughts and feelings based on what they observed. This simple activity has been shown to reduce anxious and unkind behaviour and develop empathy through understanding of others. The aim of discussion in the group was to encourage curiosity and develop the language to talk about relationships. Many students hopefully found themselves calmer having observed and thought together creatively, returning to lessons ready to learn.

YEAR 7 SPELLING BEEch Spelling Bee

As featured in our website News Post…After months of preparation - round 2 came to a close!

The MFL department kicked off this half term with the second leg of the Foreign Languages Spelling Bee.

The winners from the class competitions all took to the stage and, in front of the whole of year 7, translated from English to French, and spelt using the French alphabet, as many words as they could in 1 minute.

Everyone did incredibly well, taking the time to learn 150 words in French, and having the confidence to stand up in front of their peers.

The following pupils took part in the contest, representing their forms: Daniel 7B, Pierre 7F, Lawrence 7F, Jonathan 7F, Eshaan 7F, Abdulilah 7K, Imran 7K, Sam 7L, Rron 7L, Orlando 7L, Bram 7W, Joseph 7W, and Norik 7W

It was a tense competition and, with only 3 winning spots available, the event ended in a tie breaker to decide the third and final winner.

In the end we said well done to Orlando 7L, Jonathan 7F, and Abdulilah 7K, who won the competition and will be representing William Ellis School on the 27th April at the regional finals in East London.

Here they are together, along with Corey 7B, the honorary timekeeper for the competition.

We were proud that students from WES were very much involved in Youth Safety Week in February. Do have a look at the link above – Camden’s photo album of the event.

As part of a Camden multi-media competition to kick off the week some of our students produced this striking film.

WES HAS SOME IMPRESSIVE GOVERNORS TOO……

Last week Professor Conor Gearty our Deputy Chair of Governors, ran an event at the London School of Economics – LSE Presents the People vs The Social Sciences. The aim of the event was for the audience (including 6th formers) to witness a lively and interactive examination on the role and relevance of social sciences in the world today. The event took the form of a mock trial with engagement from the live audience in the theatre. Most of the speakers were from LSE with guest speakers from DFID, Oxford and the British Academy.

WORLD BOOK DAY

Students at WES are now too “big” for dressing up, so instead, to mark this now very special annual day, they carried out an activity in their tutor groups devised by Ms Ozkaya, lead in the Learning Resources Centre. She was inspired by the Hemingway story 'For sale: baby shoes, never worn.' Her activity showed boys how they could compose their own micro-stories onto postcards to share:

he or World Book Day this year

All Year 7s and 8s were given a World Book Day £1 book token, and the 10 best submissions will be given tokens.

WE DAY AT WEMBLEY and WE TRIP TO CITY HALL

On Wednesday March 4th, William Ellis School took part for the first time in the WE.org Charity’s WE Day at the SSE Wembley Arena. World-renowned speakers, A-list performers and thousands of young people celebrated a year of action that is transforming communities and changing lives.

26 WES students and 3 staff members enjoyed the day immensely and, this being the second WE.org event that WES has taken part in, we hope to have a long-lasting relationship with the organisation.

The first event was a visit with a group of 7 year 9 students to City Hall, the Mayor’s office, to take part in WE.org‘s City Hall Youth Integration Summit among with a select number of other schools in the London area. The students from WES were singled out for their participation in the workshops they took part in.

Thank you to all students and staff who took part in both events.

Both events are part of the widening Careers in the Curriculum programme.

Message from:

NORTH CAMDEN CHORUS

Come and join the North Camden Chorus on Tuesday evenings at William Ellis School.

We have a great relationship with the school stretching back to 1978 when the North Camden Chorus was formed for parents and students of William Ellis and Parliament Hill Schools. The aim? To perform major choral works.

Since then we have performed works from Bach to Handel, Rossini to Fauré, Mozart to Janacek.

We have three ‘terms’. At Christmas and Easter, we perform that term’s music at concerts held at St Mary Brookfield in Laurier Road. We have professional soloists and a professional and semi-professional orchestra. We get a good audience and after the concert wine and finger food is available.

In the summer we relax with an informal social for friends and family. There’s a great spread of food brought in and shared by choir members and friends. Then there’s a whole range of music from folk to popular.

During each term we rehearse each Tuesday at William Ellis school from 7.30pm to 9.30pm with a short, and necessary tea break!

The choir averages around 80 singers but we are always on the lookout for more. So please do consider coming along to join the choir.

We are an amateur choir in the best sense: we sing for pleasure. We have no auditions, but we do produce very good music. And singing is great fun – and very good for you!

It costs £50 a term (concessions available) and all the information is on our website: http://ncchorus.org.uk/category/2020-spring/
