Negli anni ’60 ha creato il movimento & his orchestra LIVE musicale denominato Ethio-Jazz, in cui si fondono tradizione etiope, influenze latinoamericane e improvvisazione jazzistica. Primo africano nella storia a diplomarsi alla Berklee Music School di Boston, Mulatu vanta una carriera prestigiosa, impreziosita da collaborazioni con Duke Ellington, Mongo Santamaria e altri. Mulatu ha vissuto tra Addis Abeba e gli Stati Uniti. Il suo status di culto si è rinnovato recentemente grazie all’omaggio reso dal regista Jim Jarmusch nella colonna sonora del film “Broken Flowers” del 2005 che contiene 7 sue composizioni; la francese “Buda Musique” ha ristampato un’intera serie dedicata all’Ethio-Jazz ed a Mulatu; la Red Bull Music Academy lo ha tributato nel 2008 con una storica serata a Londra; la sua musica è stata campionata da artisti del calibro di Nas, Kanye West e Madlib; la Strut Records è riuscita a riportarlo negli studi di registrazione (dopo oltre 20 anni) affiancato dal collettivo londinese degli Heliocen- trics, per il magico album “Inspiration Information” che è stato entusiasticamente accolto anche in Italia mettendo d’accordo critica e pubblico. Ora Mulatu ci presenta il nuovo album “Mulatu Steps Ahead”. I territori sono quelli del tanto caro Ethio-Jazz, nella sue sfaccettature più fumose e dilatate. Il disco è stato registrato tra Boston e Londra, con il contributo della Either Orchestra, degli Heliocentrics e altri ospiti speciali. Mulatu Astatke è un maestro che ha trovato finalmente un posto nella storia, accanto a giganti come Duke Ellington e Sun Ra. MULATU ASTATKE & The Heliocentrics Legendenzeit! Lässt jemand wo auch immer den Namen Mulatu Astatke fallen, sind eigentlich nur zwei Reaktionen möglich: Nackte Euphorie oder fragende Gesichter. Sollte man über einen halbwegs aufgeschlossenen musikalischen Geist verfügen, kann man sich der Faszination von Mulatus Musik in der Regel nicht entziehen. Natürlich vorausgesetzt, dass man mit dieser in Berührung gekommen ist. Dazu mangelte es in den vergangenen Jahren jedoch glücklicher Weise nicht an Gelegenheiten. Zu Mulatus mittlerweile weltweiter Fangemeinde zählen u.a. auch so unterschiedliche Gesellen wie Brian Eno, Robert Plant, Elvis Costello oder Jim Jarmusch, aber ehe einem hier derartiges Namedropping musikalisch auf die falsche Fährte lockt, alles der Reihe nach. Also, was ist da los? Der nunmehr 66jährige äthiopische Vibraphonist, Percussionist, Komponist und Arrangeur begann in den 1960er Jahren nach Schul und Studienaufenthalten in England und den USA verschiedene afro-und lateinamerikanische Stilrichtungen mit Elementen traditioneller äthiopischer Musik zu einem vollkommen eigenständigen Genre zu vermengen, das sich fortan als ‚Ethio-Jazz’ in der Musikhistorie verewigen sollte. Aufgrund der schwierigen politischen Lage seines Heimatlandes, fand all das vorerst fernab jeglicher internationaler Aufmerksamkeit statt. Der Franzose Francis Falceto stolperte Jahre später durch einen Zufall über ein Album Mahmoud Ahmeds und begann sich fortan intensiv mit der reichen Musikgeschichte Äthiopiens auseinanderzusetzen. Nach und nach hob Falceto so manchen musikalischen Schatz und startete Mitte der 80er Jahre schließlich seine mittlerweile über 20 Teile umfassende Compilation-Reihe ‚Ethiopiques’. Diese entwickelte sich wiederum zu einem weltweiten Überraschungserfolg und machte neben zahlreichen weiteren Künstlern auch Mulatu Astatke erstmalig einem westlichen Publikum zugänglich. Ebenso wurden diverse in den späten 60ern und frühen 70ern eingepielte Alben Mulatus zur Freude seiner ‚neuen’ Fanbse wiederveröffentlicht.

Addis Abeba, la capital del ethio-jazz El programa cultural Vis-À-Vis es una iniciativa impulsada por Casa África, la Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (AECID) y la Sociedad General de Autores y Editores (SGAE) para promover el intercambio de creadores y artistas entre España y los países del continente africano. Después de las primeras ediciones celebradas en 2010 y 2011 en Senegal y Cabo Verde, Etiopía será el tercer país que albergará las reuniones de trabajo entre productores musicales y promotores de conciertos, que se celebrarán entre los próximos 2 y 5 de febrero en Addis Abeba, la capital del país africano. Como en las dos ediciones anteriores, entre los grupos de música participantes se seleccionará a los integrantes de próximas giras en España. Con motivo de esta tercera edición del programa Vis-À-Vis, el blog musical de Casa África ofrece hoy un breve esbozo histórico de la música en Etiopía y una selección de veinte canciones de sus principales protagonistas. Con esta edición especial de Semilla Negra queremos poner el foco sobre la cultura sonora de un país que, ahora hace medio siglo, disfrutó de una efervescente escena de jazz y músicas vocales. En la actualidad, los sonidos etíopes presentan unas características bastante comunes al de otras tantas zonas de África. This paper provides a brief, and necessarily partial, sketch of musical life in the Ethiopian American community, spanning several musical genres touching on a cross-section of Ethiopian American musical activities. Since the inception of the Ethiopian revolution in the mid-1970’s, the forced migration of large numbers of Ethiopians has resulted in the establishment of new permanent communities of Ethiopians in the United States.

Let ‘Em Have It “L” In 1995, fresh off the success of Nas’s landmark debut album Illmatic Includes 18” X 24” poster the year prior, Columbia Records released Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & with first verse from “Put It On” Dangerouz, the first LP by a relatively unknown Harlem MC named Big (as seen below) L. Few at the time would realize that Lifestylez — which was only a modest commercial success at the time — would go on to be consid- ered a true classic of the era, comparable to Illmatic itself. Armed with a cocky Uptown attitude, a sharp wit and production from the likes of Lord Finesse, Buckwild and Showbiz, Big L established himself as one of New York’s Hip Hop heavyweights with an album that balanced radio appeal with uncompromising hardcore lyricism. From the smooth sounds of “M.V.P.” to raw posse cuts like “8 Iz Enuff” and “Da Graveyard” (which featured a rookie MC from Brooklyn by the name of Jay-Z), Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerouz solidified Big L’s status as a Hip Hop legend despite being the only studio album released prior to his tragic death in 1999.
