Having completed the large family of Dr Abraham FAURE (1795-1875), we revert back to Dr Abraham’s next brother, Johannes Gysbertus FAURE (1796-1869). A reminder: JGF was born in Stellenbosch and died in Somerset West. He married Magteld Johanna HOFFMAN (1799-?) in Stellenbosch. JGF was the first FAURE to own the farm “Vergenoegd” in Faure (previously part of Eersterivier, Cape), which remains in the family today (2014). JGF and MJH had 10 children.

On 21.06.1842, aged 21, Willem married Margaretha Magdalena BOSMAN (* 20.09.1822, “Vergenoegd”; 2001 Pic by APF (1946-) Stellenbosch; ~ 29.09.1822, Stellenbosch; + 1885) [daughter of Izaak Pieter BOSMAN (* c1793) and Anna Maria ACKERMAN (* c1803)], in Stellenbosch. At the time of marriage Margaretha lived at Bottelary (just outside Stellenbosch). She became a member of the Stellenbosch DRC on 20.12.1837. They had 11 children. (DrA, HeLo, DVP, HMM, FS/DRCR.)

JOHANNA BARBARA FAURE (1822-?): No further information. She probably died young.

A SON FAURE (1824-1824)

SHDR yields that a “zoontje van Johannes Gysbertus” died on 16.01.1824, 19 days after birth. This data enables us to calculate a birth date. He died at “Moddergat” (the old name for the farming area). He was unnamed, presumably because he was born frail, very ill, or disabled, and expected to die soon after birth.

On 08.08.1848, aged 23, Aletta married Daniel Ferdinand IMMELMAN (* 23.10.1821, Stellenbosch; ~ 04.11.1821; + 23.04.1902, aged 80) [son of Gysbertus Christiaan IMMELMAN () and Christina Elisabeth ACKERMAN ()], in Stellenbosch. They had 9 children. (DrA, HeLo, DVP, FS/DRCR.)

ABRAHAM FAURE (1827-1852)

At age 24, whilst driving to Ceres, Cape with his brother, Johannes Gysbertus, he fell from the wagon and was killed instantly. (DrA.)

CLARA ELIZABETH CATHARINA FAURE (1829-?)

DrA gives her date of birth as 23.09 (no year). In the document he changed the date, presumably indicating that he was unsure. We have accepted the Birth Register date. She became a member of the Stellenbosch DRC in 1846 (FS/DRCR). On 05.12.1859 (FS/DRCR; DrA says 06.12.1859), aged 30, she married Adriaan Jacobus ROOS [FS/DRCR, DrA (misses “Jacobus”), HeLo, DVP] in Stellenbosch. He was a widower (FS/DRCR). Clara’s place of abode at the time of marriage was Somerset West (FS/DRCR). A FS/DRCR search yields that AJR was born on 17.07.1818 and baptised on 09.08.1818 in Stellenbosch (son of Tielman Johannes ROOS and Anna Sophia ROUX). He was therefore 41 years’ of age at date of marriage. There are no records of children. (Other sources: DVP, HeLo, FS.)

JOHANNES GYSBERTUS FAURE (1831-1858)

For many 2 decades we had “No further information” next to JGF’s name. For the same period we have been puzzled by the data we had on a Abraham FAURE:

 MOOC/97611: * 11.1850, Somerset West; + 12.06.1937, last address Kock Street Rustenburg, aged 86 years, 7 months (* 11.1850 is derived from this data). He married Margaritha Jacoba NEL (+ 23.06.1936) in Kimberley. The surviving children were: o Margaretha Leonora FAURE x HOFFMAN. o Pieter Johannes FAURE. o Abraham FAURE.  Mr Faure BASSON (source FBAS used extensively elsewhere): * 19.06.1858. He married a MJ NEL and had 4 children in Kimberley.  Mrs VISSCHER (PC/VIS) (contacted in 1995, and not again later because were were stymied): Abraham had children 6: o Petrus Johannes (or possibly “Thomas”), who farmed in the Syferbult District, near Darby, Transvaal. o “Aunt Maggie”; she was married and had 2 sons and 2 daughters. This can only be Margaretha Leonora FAURE x HOFFMAN referred to above (the MOOC information). o Abraham, who had 3 sons. o “Aunt Clara” (other MOOC information shows that Abraham had a daughter Clara Elizabeth FAURE). o Louis Carel Emmanuel FAURE, who had 1 son, Abram FAURE. o “Oom (uncle) Johnnie”, who died young and unmarried. o Other MOOC information yields a Johannes Gysbertus FAURE (1886-1913), most likely “Oom (uncle) Johnnie”.

The above information clearly indicates the same Abraham FAURE, but his date of birth clealy remains a puzzle. Other information which substantiates the link to his father, Johannes Gysbertus FAURE (1831-1858):

 Abraham (1850/58-1937) had a son named Johannes Gysbertus FAURE (1886-1913), as was his grandfather, Johannes Gysbertus FAURE (1796-1869).  The name Abraham appears frequently in this branch (but this is not strong evidence, as it appears in many other branches).  Johannes Gysbertus FAURE (1831-1858) had a sister Clara Elizabeth Catharina FAURE (1829-?), and a niece, Clara Elisabeth Catharina IMMELMAN (see above).  The name “Willie”, grandson of Abraham FAURE (1850/58-1937), was mentioned by PC/VIS (see later). This is most likely “Willem”, a name that started off, and appears frequently, in this branch.  Johannes Gysbertus FAURE (1831-1858) died at age 26. Abraham’s birth dates, 11.1850 and 19.06.1858, both fit with JGF’s date of death, 31.07.1858.  We can find no evidence of brothers or sisters of Abraham FAURE (1850/1858-1937). This fits with the early death of his father, Johannes Gysbertus FAURE (1831-1858).

 Johannes Gysbertus FAURE (1831-1858) died in Somerset West; Abraham FAURE (1850/1858-1937) was born there.

As the above is stong evidence that the “missing link” has been found, as well as based other MOOC information we provide later, we proceed on this basis.

Subsequent to the above work on the missing link story, RML assisted greatly in the research of this family (his source: FS). In July 2015 RML wrote: “Onto the children on FS with no mother or father given. Johannes Gysbertus Faure LZXN-JK6 * 07.07.1876 Kimberley ~20.08.0876 Kimberley. Helena Claudia Faure LZXN-JYP * 12.08.1877 Kimberley ~23.09.1877 Kimberley not on your list. Petrus Johannes Thomas Faure LZXN-VHN*06.11.1878 Kimberley ~09.02.1879 Kimberley. Clara Elizabeth Catharina Faure LZXN-VD7 *04.09.1880 Kimberley ~28.09.1880 Kimberley (+before 11.09.1882 contradicts your Aunt Clara statement? Or was there a second Clara??). Abraham Faure LZXN-VNY 02.06.1882 Kimberley ~06.08.1882 Kimberley.”

On 29.04.1856 (FS: 27.04), aged 22, Susanna married Gysbert Christiaan IMMELMAN (* 01.01.1828, Stellenbosch; ~ 27.01.1828, Stellenbosch; + 08.09.1913, aged 85) [son of Gysbertus Christiaan IMMELMAN (* c1793) and Christina Elisabeth ACKERMAN (* c1802; + 12.01.1843)], in Stellenbosch. JACOBUS CHRISTIAAN FAURE (1855-1945)

JCF was born in Caledon. We do not know where he grew up or was educated. Accordinng to source PC/AFC [Abraham Faure COETZEE (1949-)] he owned a wine grape / wine farm in Somerset West, most likely “Erinvale”, which adjoined “Vergelegen”. He writes: “We have no concrete evidence, but it was common knowledge in our family that JCF owned a wine farm in the Somerset West district. It bordered the farm of his brother-in-law, one Theunissen. From family lore, and the fact that Theunissen owned ‘Vergelegen’, it would place JCF's farm approximately at the current Erinvale. I have not been able to confirm this. Back to JCF. The farm was sold by around 1890 (likely as a result of the phylloxera epidemic that destroyed local vineyards). Another story relates to British government subsidies that were ceased. Whatever the reason, Theunissen offered JC employment on Vergelegen when the farm was sold, to which JC responded, ‘Ek werk nie vir 'n baas nie’ (I do not work for a boss).”

AFC. This information is supported by the story of JCF’s sister, Catharina Elizabeth THEUNISSEN (nee FAURE) (1863-1930) (see below): when her husband, Willem Daniel (1820- 1868), passed away she and her children moved to the farm “Laaste Gift”, which, according to source AAF, was across the river from “Vergelegen”. It is not certain exactly where “Laaste Gift” was, but it is likely the area between present day “Erinvale” (which borders Lourensford Road) and the Lourensford River. An historical account of Erinvale (http://erinvale.co.za/history-of-erinvale/) informs that “Erinvale” was bought by an Irishman, Edward Strangman, in 1868 [the year when CEF moved to “Laaste Gift” with her mother, MMF (nee BOSMAN)], and that: “At the time of development [of “Erinvale” in1868], the land between the river and Lourensford Road was sold to Vergelegen”. This confirms that the land between the between present day “Erinvale” (which borders Lourensford Road) and the Lourensford River had a separate title deed. However, the historical source adds: “The Erin Vale farm … [had] … the Lourens River as the southern boundary.” The “sale to Vergelegen” could be incorrect as it conflicts with the AAF source (the present day owner of “Vergelegen”) which says that CEF lived “across the river”. The “southern boundary” could well have been the southern border of “Laaste Gift” which was also owned by the owner of “Erinvale”, and who sold it to MMF (nee BOSMAN) in 1868. A title deed search will be done in this regard.

JCF was 13 when the farm was bought and most likely assisted his mother on the farm (perhaps after school initially). He would have become a full time Farmer at a later age. As indicated by AFC, the farm was sold c1890, when JCF was c35. According to AFC, “JCF moved to the Transvaal. It was probably between 1889 and 1892. The train service only operated to Bloemfontein at that time (it was extended only in September 1892). JCF's in-laws came

As the wagons could not carry all his belongings, some were buried near Bloemfontein and were retrieved at a later date. JCF tried his hand at many things and eventually bought the farm ‘Blyvooruitzicht’ in the Belfast district where he settled.”

AFC adds: “It is not entirely clear what JCF's position was during the Boer War that saw his wife and children in tent T242 I6 of the Barberton Concentration Camp from 25.06.1901 to 22.07.1902. The records at the camp indicated that JCF was ‘out with stock; not a burgher’.” [The latter could mean “Out with cattle; not a citizen” (of the Transvaal); we know that he relocated from the Cape (a separate country then under British rule) sometime in the period 1886-1889 (see birth of second and third children). A puzzle is that JCF’s wife, MEB, was also from the Cape, but she was interned.]

According to PC/AFC, MEB was interned with 4 of her children, listed as: Anna Gloudina, aged 15; Margrita Magdalena, aged 12 [she died in the camp on 02.10.1901 (this date conflcts with the date in the table)]; Abraham Justinus, aged 8; Jacobus Christiaan, baby. They were released on 20.06.1902 (this date conflicts with the above date).

JCF was a member of the DRC. On 17.07.1883, aged 27, Jacobus married Maria Elizabeth BRINK (* 08.11.1865, Caledon, Cape; + 18.02.1951, Belfast, aged 85; [] 1951, Old Cemetery, Belfast, Transvaal) in Stellenbosch. MEB (called “Bettie”) was the second of 14 children of Abraham Justinus BRINK (* 20.02.1824; + 1900) and Anna Gloudina LOUW (* 30.03.1838; + 1910). Her last address was Fitzgerald Street, Belfast. According the PC/AFC: “Very little is known about her life, other than the records of the Barberton Concentration Camp. They list Margrita Magdalena as a 12 year old who died in the camp of pneumonia. No date of death is listed on those records. The death list of the Government Gazette dated 24/07/1901 (page 119), includes her name, so I can only assume she died before that date.”

There is uncertainly as regards MMF’s first name and date of death. PC/AFC has her first name as “Maria”, PC/WdS as “Margaretha”, and the Concentration Camp records as “Margrita”. The Barbeton Concentration Camp. Source: AFC. sources in the table give her date of death as 28.08.1901, and PC/AFC refers to the GG of 24.07.1901, ie a date which is before the table date.

ABRAHAM JUSTINUS FAURE (1893-1969)

AJF was the grandfather of Abraham Faure COETZEE (1949-), the source denoted “PC/AFC” in this text. He writes: “My grandfather Abraham (as he was named and called) was 7 when he spent a year with his mother and siblings in the Barberton Concentration Camp. Also in the camp was the family of Commandant Hendrik Prinsloo, Commander of the Carolina Commando. One of the children was the 12 year old Hendrik. By 1914 young Hendrik, later to become Colonel, was in command of the Carolina Commando first in action during the rebellion and then in South West Africa. Abraham FAURE was a member of this Commando and was stationed near Luderitz. Because of his ability with, and love for, horses, he spent most of his time tending horses. While walking a horse, he came across a lone German soldier. I still have in my possession the water bottle, bayonet and a blanket that was taken from the German before he was sent back to his side of the line.

“Abraham farmed, first on the farm 'Blydevooruitzicht' with his father JCF, and later bought the farm ‘Groenvlei’, also in the Belfast District. The purchase of ‘Groenvlei’ was made possible by successful flower production on the farm. At one time the farm was referred to as ‘Floradale’. During the 1947 visit of the Royal Family, carnations from ‘Groenvlei’ were used extensively in flower arrangements made for their visit. Abraham died on December 24, 1969 and was laid to rest in Belfast.”

First at Pretoria Boys High and later at the Medical School of the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. Here in Edinburgh, on 28.07.1926 he married Isobel Jean MacCREA (* 18.05.1896; + 06.10.1991). Koos furthered his studies at Edinburgh and also the Sorbonne in Paris. He specialised in Ear, Nose and Throat at the University of Vienna and returned to Lancashire where he opened a practice.

He moved to Kimberley at some stage and married Margaretha Jacoba NEL (* 1854, Glen Lynden, District Queenstown; + 23.06.1936, aged 82) there. They had 8 (possibly 9) children.
