Captain

“Heaven and earth never agreed better to frame a place for man’s habitation.” Who said this? What were they talking about? The person who said this was John Smith. He is quite a famous person in history, and I will show you that he was an explorer, a leader and an author.

In the first place we see him as an explorer. He was born in England in 1580. Also known as Captain John Smith, he sailed on the to New England, on a mission to colonize Virginia. Along with him were two ships, the and the . Smith also created a map of New England and Chesapeake Bay (which he had explored) and it became known as the Zuῆiga map.

As well as being an explorer, we also see him as a good leader. In the above quote, Smith was talking about Virginia, which he succeeded very well in colonizing. He helped create a colony, Jamestown, and was one of its seven governors. Smith helped so much with the colony that he ended up becoming its leader in 1608. He also gave training to people in the settlement. Smith even served as the Admiral of New England! But, after being badly burned in an accidental explosion in 1609, he returned to England.

Additionally, Smith was not only a good leader but is also known as an author. Smith wrote several books, including A True Relation of Virginia since the First Planting of that Colony (1612), A Description of New England (1616), General (1624) and The True Travels, Adventures and Observations of Captain John Smith (1630). Unfortunately he tended to exaggerate his exploits to make himself look good. Even so, much of what he said has been verified by modern scholars. He died in England in 1631 of an unknown illness.

Given these points I hope you now know a little more about Captain John Smith. I hope I have made it clear that John Smith was an explorer, a leader, and an author. I have enjoyed learning, researching, and writing about Captain John Smith.
