[email protected] Building a Boundary: the First Venetian-Ottoman Border in Dalmatia, 1573-1576 The establishment of a precise borderline between the Ottoman Empire and the Repu- blic of Venice on the Dalmatian mainland fi rst became an issue as a consequence of the third Venetian-Ottoman War (1537–1540). The issue arose again after the War of Cyprus (1570–1573). The victories of the Turkish army forced the Venetians to sue for a favourable interpretation of the 1573 peace treaty, under which they envisaged a full handover of their pre-war Dalmatian territories. The lengthy negotiations involved the Grand Vizier Mehmed Sokollu and his counsellor Solomon Ashkenazi, the Venetian Senate and its ambassadors. Only once Sultan Murad III had agreed to a settlement did both the Ottoman Empire and Venice send a special commission to Dalmatia, led respectively by Ferhat Sokolovic, Sanjak-bey of Bosnia, and by the Venetian nobleman Giacomo Soranzo. The negotiations took place in pavilions erected in Biljane, near Zadar; they were later moved to Skradin and fi nally to Solin during the summer of 1576. The Venetian government was highly satisfi ed with the new borderline, which led to relatively improved relations between the two states that lasted until the War of Candia (1645–69).

  • A Fountain for Memory
1 A FOUNTAIN FOR MEMORY: The Trevi Flow of Power and Transcultural Performance Pam Krist, PhD Thesis School of Modern Languages, Literature and Culture Royal Holloway, University of London 2015 2 3 Abstract In memory studies much research on monuments focuses on those with traumatic or controversial associations whilst others can be overlooked. The thesis explores this gap and seeks to supplement the critical understanding of a populist monument as a nexus for cultural remembering. The Trevi Fountain in Rome is chosen because it is a conduit for the flow of multivalent imagery, ideological manipulation, and ever-evolving performances of memory, from design plans to mediated representations. The thesis begins by locating the historical pre-material and material presences of the Fountain, establishing this contextual consideration as contributory to memory studies. It then surveys the field of theory to build a necessarily flexible conceptual framework for researching the Fountain which, given the movement and sound of water and the coin-throwing ritual, differs from a static monument in its memorial connotations. The interpretations of the illusory Trevi design and its myths are explored before employing a cross-disciplinary approach to the intertextuality of its presences and its performative potential in art, literature, film, music, advertising and on the Internet. The thesis concludes with questions about the digital Trevi and dilution of memory. Gathering strength throughout is the premise of the Fountain as a transcultural vehicle for dominant ideologies ‒ from the papal to commercial, the Grand Tour to cyber tourism ‒ seeking to control remembering and forgetting. Sometimes these are undermined by the social and inventive practices of memory.

Tonight on the travel channel they Francescos Italy beginning a series called- Francesco"s Italy!!!!!!!!! Looks wonderful!!!! They aired it in the UK last year, it's a good series. They also did a book, which is actually on sale on www. Hi Witty : you'll Francescos Italy these programmes! Thanks to all!!! I thought Francescos Italy this was the same series that had all of you abuzz across the pond!!! And I had no idea that there was a book too!!! Thanks a lot and I will Francescos Italy tomorrow about what I think of it!! You all know that I just live and breathe for Italy!!! We soooo looked forward to Francesco's Italyhaving got totally immersed in his fabulous series 'Francesco' s Venice' which was Fantastic!!! Francesco's Italy was too superficial. I mean 20 minutes for Rome???? Come on! Francesco is such a good presenter he deserves to have more time to develop each subject. Like Anna, I was a little disappointed in the 'Italy' one. As she says the 'Venice' one was great, so in depth, which we didn't get from the 'Italy' one. I would have prefered he did another city or Francescos Italy in depth, as he did in the Venice one but that is just a Francescos Italy preference. Maybe I just love "all things Francescos Italy "!! I have not had the pleasure of seeing the Venice one, so I can't make a comparison there.

  • Music for Trombone and Voice from the Hapsburg Empire: an Historical Overview with Tenor Trombone Transcriptions
Abstract Title of dissertation: MUSIC FOR TROMBONE AND VOICE FROM THE HAPSBURG EMPIRE: AN HISTORICAL OVERVIEW WITH TENOR TROMBONE TRANSCRIPTIONS Wayne W. Wells, Doctor of Musica l Arts, 2005 Dissertation directed by: Professor Gregory Mill er School of Music Compositions featuring voice and obbligato trombone reached a n artistic peak in the courts and monasteries of 18th century Austria due to the convergence of s everal factors. These factors included the influence of Giovanni Gabri eli and the many northern Italian composers who worked at the Austrian courts, the long history of religious connotations of the trombone in Germany and Austria , the high level of trombone playing in the courts of 18th century Vienna and Salzburg , and the unique ability of the trombone to blend with voices. This document explores the rich history of the trombone and charts the evolution of soloistic trombone writing in vocal music, from the innovations of large scale works by Gabrieli and Schütz to the highly virtuosic obbligato writing of composers in 18th century Austrian monasteries and the courts of Vienna and Salzburg. This exploration takes place through discussion of general trends in trombone writing as well as by examination of specific selected pieces that illustrate interesting or unique stylistic features. The document accompanies recordings of two recitals of Austrian and German music for trombone and voice from the 17th and 18th centuries. The r ecitals include several transcriptions of music originally written for alto trombone and alto voice into keys that would be suitable for performance by tenor trombone and tenor voice. This was done with the goal of sparking interest in this repertoire by less experienced trombonists.
