Growing from a rich and diverse food the city’s restaurant industry has kicked into a new level over the past few years bringing in more tastes and dining experiences! The following lists is only a small sample of what the city offers, I highly recommend you take a look at the places listed and also wander around the neighborhoods yourself and find a new place to add to this list! Pizza! Whether you are looking for that greasy, delicious pizza or one that has more flavor and less regret we have you covered! o Caliente Pizza & Draft House- 4624 Liberty Ave, Pittsburgh PA 15224 – 412-682-1414 Home to the 2016, 2017, and 2018 World Pizza Champions! Caliente’s has four locations in the Pittsburgh area. They have a variety of pizza and over 20 craft beers on tap. They have extra seating downstairs with another full bar. They also have every day food and beverage specials along with special beer release events! o Pizza Taglio- 126 South Highland Ave, Pittsburgh PA 15206 – 412-404-7410 Pizza Taglio is a Roman-style pizzeria with the option of red and white pizza! The crust is thin and crunchy, but light and delicious! The restaurant is small and seating is limited, so be prepared to wait if going on a weekend evening. There are plenty of bars near the restaurant so I recommend putting your name on the wait and grabbing a cocktail nearby. Be aware, it is BYOB but luckily just across the street is a Wine’s and Spirits so you can grab a bottle of wine to pair with the pizza! o Mercurio’s- 5523 Walnut St, Pittsburgh PA 15232 – 412-621-6220 Mercurio’s is a family-owned Italian eatery located in Shadyside. They are known for their Neapolitan pizza which is pizza made with tomatoes and Mozzarella cheese. Monday’s through Wednesday’s they offer Gluten-Free crust! After you get your pizza fix, they also are an artisan gelato shop! o Spak Brothers- 5107 Penn Ave, Pittsburgh PA 15224 – 412-362-7725 Pizza that is only a 15-minute walk from the hospital? • Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage
Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Aaron Joseph Johnson All rights reserved ABSTRACT Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson This dissertation is a study of jazz on American radio. The dissertation's meta-subjects are mediation, classification, and patronage in the presentation of music via distribution channels capable of reaching widespread audiences. The dissertation also addresses questions of race in the representation of jazz on radio. A central claim of the dissertation is that a given direction in jazz radio programming reflects the ideological, aesthetic, and political imperatives of a given broadcasting entity. I further argue that this ideological deployment of jazz can appear as conservative or progressive programming philosophies, and that these tendencies reflect discursive struggles over the identity of jazz. The first chapter, "Jazz on Noncommercial Radio," describes in some detail the current (circa 2013) taxonomy of American jazz radio. The remaining chapters are case studies of different aspects of jazz radio in the United States. Chapter 2, "Jazz is on the Left End of the Dial," presents considerable detail to the way the music is positioned on specific noncommercial stations. Chapter 3, "Duke Ellington and Radio," uses Ellington's multifaceted radio career (1925-1953) as radio bandleader, radio celebrity, and celebrity DJ to examine the medium's shifting relationship with jazz and black American creative ambition.
