Really goes into great detail about what made eminem the international superstar he is and one of the best rappers The Dark Story of Eminem all time - trials and tribulations, demons, drugs and alcohol, the hood he grew up in, family and his motivation. You won't be disappointed. Realistic view into a true superstar GOAT. I liked the insights into the "real" Eminem. The person. He is a genius and even a book purportedly about his dark side comes off as a positive. Long live Em! Very interesting. Had a hard time putting it down. My heart goes out to him. More respect towards this fighter I almost never read biographies, but something about Eminem made me want to know more. His public image as Slim Shady often incites anger and promotes the idea that he is without any moral compass - and yet in many interviews he comes across as a soft-spoken, intelligent, and honest man that is quite at odds with that public image. This book is sympathetically yet even-handedly written: Nick Hasted is the first to admit those times that his subject overstepped the mark, and yet manages to show us the damage - partly caused by we, the public, in our often-invasive want for celebrity gossip - that has made Marshall Mathers into the man he The Dark Story of Eminem. I was honestly moved by the The Dark Story of Eminem of his early life, and later his life in the goldfish bowl, and came away with the impression that this was the story of a mostly good man turned borderline insane by the crazy media-led society we live in. The middle portions of the book, detailing his many legal battles, home troubles, criminal convictions and inflamatory lyrics may turn many off him - I admit even I found some things distasteful, as I have some of his music, and I'm largely unshockable - but the latter chapters The Dark Story of Eminem up for that by showing us how those things can be overcome. Nick Hasted cleverly refuses to shy away from the more unsavoury parts of Em's story while somehow helping us to understand how culture, poverty, and issues of identity may have contributed to its happening. Eminem's battle with prescription drugs, alcohol, and lethargy ultimately make for inspiring reading, as The Dark Story of Eminem comes out the other side to one of the most impressive comebacks in recent music history. Listening to Recovery and its uplifting messages of re-birth and renewal, it's hard to believe just how far he's come. On a more personal level, I The Dark Story of Eminem myself on prescription painkillers for a long-standing condition, and have sleeping tablets likewise for when I need them. Reading this and watching Em's many candid interviews on drug use have The Dark Story of Eminem me think carefully every time I reach for the pills. I now stop to think "Do I need them at this moment? Am I actually in pain right now, or going by habit? So thank you, Marshall, and thank you, Nick, for this great story. Similar Products. Task: Explain why you chose this text I chose this book because Eminem is one of my favorite artists. It makes me think about how crazy this guy actually I'd and the things he says makes me laugh but really he's saying some crazy stuff. Just finished page 17 on chapter 1. So far in the book I read that Eminem is a crazy guy he angers a lot of gay rights people. And he is most defiantly different then other artists. The Dark Story of Eminem uses a lot of ways to make fun of America and is not proud of where he lives. I Task: Explain why you chose this text I chose this book because Eminem is one of my favorite artists. I predict that it will explain about how Eminem was drugged as a child and get into more things about his past! Hard to say though because it's an autobiography! View 1 comment. Jan 27, Chris Jones rated it really liked it. Really enjoyed it. Covers most of Marshall Mathers life in depth. Definitely understand him more as a person. Goes in depth on childhood and how he blew up in the rap game. Disappointed the author didn't mention Royce da 5'9 once. Was looking forward to that, understanding how him and Em met, beefed, made up and dropped an EP. Also barely a mention of Obie Trice, who after being Eminem's next big thing is now basically on the back of milk cartons. What happened there? Anyhow, solid book and lear Really enjoyed it. Anyhow, solid book and learnt lots of things new! Jul 10, 15huckerbyg rated it really liked it. It was really intriguing, and i didn't mind having a little peek into life! The person. He is a genius and even a book purportedly about his dark side comes off as a positive. Long live Em! The often The Dark Story of Eminem Independent and Guardian music, movies, culture and books writer looks at Marshall Mathers childhood, family ties, his relationship with his only love and former wife Kim, and his rise to global fame. Hasted attempts to understand the rationale of the angry man that first came to international light with '', but also a look at modern Detroit, censorship, , Dr Dre, misogyny and homophobia in rap and the realisation of the film 8-Mile. Jun 01, Ellie rated it it was ok. I've read this book years The Dark Story of Eminem. From my point of view, it doesn't give any detail about Eminem's childhood apart from saying he was bullied at school. There are other books that go more in-depth about his early life and the jobs he worked at before he became famous. This book is more about his rise to fame and how he first started rapping. I was more interested in his childhood. The book was good, but the translator apparently cannot conjugate French verbs correctly or spell. Aug 26, Per rated it it was amazing. Explain the background, stumbling blocks and pitfalls for this great artist. I found it to be a very well written book that provides insights into the childhood The Dark Story of Eminem rise to fame of one of the more mysterious artists in the rap industry. The book discusses how Eminem, born Marshall Mathers, was raised by his drug addicted mother in the projects of Detroit, his struggles at school and at making friends, and, later on, his improbable rise to stardom as a rapper. Even though the main focus of the book is Eminem, Hasted does a good job showing other interesting topics as well. For example, in the beginning of the book, he gives a brief history of the city and the eventual decline of Detroit, which was the area where Eminem grew up. The Dark Story of Eminem the book, Hasted also discusses the struggles of being a celebrity, how the hip hop and rap industries work, how artists much change their character and appearance in order to become famous, the drug issues that exist in the music business, misogyny in rap music, and how music is important to and can change our society. Although at some points the book tended to drag on for a bit, overall, I found it to be a very well written and informational book that I would recommend to anyone who is curious about the life of Eminem or how the rap industry works. The Dark Story of Eminem y reiterativo. El ritmo narrativo es muy lento. Se anima por momentos en los que cuenta cosas nuevas. Pero cuando se trata de contar sus malos rollos con sus familiares se atasca y se repite una y otra vez. Me que Irregular y reiterativo. Oct 02, Sierra rated it really liked it. Remember the '90s? I had kind of forgotten about our societal preoccupations during that time, but bought this book for 25 cents at the library and found it fairly interesting. Eminem is a fascinating character and incredibly talented - that's just a fact. This book also managed to be about the decline of Detroit, the rise of celebrity culture, misogyny in hip hop and the role of music in our culture. On the down side, this dragged a bit and relied entirely on media interviews. On the upside, ce Remember the '90s? On the upside, certainly an interesting subject and this book touches on all the foggiest parts of Eminem's history - his upbringing, his relationship with his mother and Kim, his personas. I have been a pretty big fan of Eminem since I was very young but this book about him was absolute torture to read. I was having to force myself to go and pick it up after not touching it for days and days It was like reading an essay instead of a book. Just blaaaaahhhhh! Apr 30, Kylie Martin rated it really liked it. Sep 12, Lynda Mcgovern rated it liked it. This book was quite interesting.
