Back in 1997, [artist ]Eminem[/artist] recorded The Slim Shady EP, the collection of songs that Dr. Dre first heard before signing him to Aftermath, and that would later serve as the basis for the Detroit rapper's debut, The Slim Shady LP. But prior to Slim Shady 's twisted, demented shock rap, Eminem was a battle-rapper at heart who was still searching for his lyrical voice. His first album, 1996's Infinite, showcases the Shady one with a more measured flow and lower vocal register. The hard-to-find indie album was made available for free download on Wednesday (May 13) on ThisIs50.com, the Web site founded by Em's protégé [artist ]50 Cent[/artist]. "I recorded Infinite in 1995, my first album," Em said in his 2008 autobiography, "The Way I Am." "It sold maybe 70 copies and didn't get great feedback. A lot of people said it sounded like Nas, and he was a heavy influence at the time. But I had an album out, and I could say that. With The Slim Shady EP, it was a different story. That sh-- got some buzz in the underground, and online sites couldn't keep it in stock. I started getting calls about shows." The 11-track album features a handful of guests, most notably Denaun Porter, who was also a member of Eminem's D12 crew under the name Kon Artis. Eminem's rare debut available for free download. Eminem's rare first album is being given away online, but not by Eminem. Infinite, independently released in 1996, is now available for free download from a website owned by 50 Cent. The give-away certainly doesn't seem that professional. "This rare album is a MUST have for any Rap [sic] fan," reads the blurb on 50 Cent's This Is 50 website, which offers Infinite as an MP3 using the ad-supported download service zShare. Recorded four years before The Slim Shady LP made Eminem a star, only 1000 pressings of Infinite were ever made. "It sold maybe 70 copies," Eminem wrote in his autobiography. Infinite has since been out of print and copies of the album sell online for about £100. Speaking to Vanity Fair in 2004, Eminem explained how Infinite's reception guided his future career. "On [Infinite] you can hear the pain and the woes of just growing up and being poor and having a baby on the way. Obviously, I was young and influenced by other artists, and I got feedback that I [sounded a lot like] by Nas and AZ, another rapper who was down with Nas at the time. I started taking all the feedback and started throwing it back in my music: 'Yeah, I am white trash, I am whatever you're gonna say about me.' Somehow started taking the disadvantages and used them to my advantage. I reached a point where I stopped caring what people thought about me. And the second I stopped caring, people started caring about me." However, it is unclear whether Eminem has approved his first album being made available for free download by This Is 50. Keyes, Chair The black brass band parade known as the second line has been a staple of New Orleans culture for nearly 150 years. Through more than a century of social, political and demographic upheaval, the second line has persisted as an institution in the city’s black community, with its swinging march beats and emphasis on collective improvisation eventually giving rise to jazz, funk, and a multitude of other popular genres both locally and around the world. More than any other local custom, the second line served as a crucible in which the participatory, syncretic character of black music in New Orleans took shape. While the beat of the second line reverberates far beyond the city limits today, the neighborhoods that provide the parade’s sustenance face grave challenges to their existence. Ten years after Hurricane Katrina tore up the economic and cultural fabric of New Orleans, these largely poor communities are plagued on one side by underfunded schools and internecine violence, and on the other by the rising tide of post-disaster gentrification and the redlining-in- disguise of neoliberal urban policy.

Williams ABSTRACT ‗Musical Borrowing in Hip-hop‘ begins with a crucial premise: the hip-hop world, as an imagined community, regards unconcealed intertextuality as integral to the production and reception of its artistic culture. In other words, borrowing, in its multidimensional forms and manifestations, is central to the aesthetics of hip-hop. This study of borrowing in hip-hop music, which transcends narrow discourses on ‗sampling‘ (digital sampling), illustrates the variety of ways that one can borrow from a source text or trope, and ways that audiences identify and respond to these practices. Another function of this thesis is to initiate a more nuanced discourse in hip-hop studies, to allow for the number of intertextual avenues travelled within hip-hop recordings, and to present academic frameworks with which to study them. The following five chapters provide case studies that prove that musical borrowing, part and parcel of hip-hop aesthetics, occurs on multiple planes and within myriad dimensions.
