1 Early Followers of Francis and Clare This list highlights some of the early followers of Francis and Clare who lived mostly within the first one hundred years of the Franciscan Movement. It reflects many different sources, not all of which agree with one another! If some of the accounts were not in agreement with specific dates, the compilers did their best to reflect accurate information. Clare’s group was known as the Poor Ladies of San Damiano, Damianites or the Poor Ladies of Assisi [known today as the Order of St. Clare or Poor Clares (O.S.C. or P.C.; Second Order); the Third Order of St. Francis (T.O.S.F.; Third Order Secular) is known today as the Secular Franciscan Order (O.F.S., Ordo Franciscanus Saecularis). • St. Conrad of Piacenza
St. Conrad of Piacenza (O.F.S.) [1290 – 1351] (Feast Day: February 19) Born in 1290 of a noble family in northern Italy, Conrad as a young man married Euphrosyne, daughter of a nobleman. One day while hunting, he ordered attendants to set fire to some brush in order to flush out the game. The fire spread to nearby fields and to a large forest. Conrad fled. An innocent peasant was imprisoned, tortured to confess, and condemned to death. Conrad confessed his guilt, saved the man’s life, and paid for the damaged property. One site stated that he paid for the damaged property and he and his wife gave everything they owned to the poor in recompense. The other site stated that he paid for the damaged property, selling nearly all he owned in order to raise the cash. Conrad and his wife saw the hand of God in the dramatic event. Soon after this event in 1315, Conrad and his wife agreed to separate: she to a Poor Clare monastery and he joining a community of hermits, who were Franciscan tertiaries (known today as Secular Franciscans), following the Third Order Rule. Soon Conrad developed a reputation for holiness, and the flow of visitors left him unable to keep the solitude he sought. He then embarked on the life of a pilgrim, going to Rome, and from there to the Holy Land and Malta and, about 1340, to Palermo in Sicily, where he was directed to an isolated grotto in the Val di Noto. Conrad felt called by God to serve the local people more directly and in 1343 went to the city of Netum, where he cared for the sick at the Hospital of St.

2-19-21 “Thou need not fear anything, nor be ashamed of anything, who bears the sign of the cross upon their brow.” Saint Augustine ● “Saint for the Week”: Saint Conrad of Piacenza. Conrad was born at Piacenza, Italy around 1290 to a family of nobles. As a young man, he married the beautiful Euphrosyne, daughter of another noble family. One day, while out hunting, Conrad ordered servants to set fire to brushwood to flush out some game. A strong wind spread the fire to nearby fields and forests, and the flames went on to destroy villages. Unable to stop the fire, Conrad returned home in secret with his servants, and they said nothing about their role in the disaster. Authorities seeking the arsonist arrested an innocent peasant and tortured him to confession before condemning him to death. When he heard this, Conrad was filled with remorse and stepped forward to take responsibility for the fire. The experience caused Conrad and his wife to consider where God might be acting in their lives. Upon reflection, they concluded that God was calling them to a simple life of service, and they gave the rest of their possessions to the poor and each joined a religious order. Conrad took on the life of a hermit and lived a life of prayer and solitude. He became known for his holiness, and people sought him out for spiritual direction. His feast day is February 19 and he is the patron saint of Noto, Sicily. ● This Week’s Prayer Partner Mass: This week the Prayer Partner group of 5C and 3A will attend Mass in the St.

  • St. Conrad of Piacenza Catholic.Net
St. Conrad of Piacenza Catholic.net PROFILE Hermit of the Third Order of St. Francis, date of birth uncertain; died at Noto in Sicily, 19 February 1351. He belonged to one of the noblest families of Piacenza, and having married when he was quite young, led a virtuous and God-fearing life. On one occasion, when he was engaged in his usual pastime of hunting, he ordered his attendants to fire some brushwood in which game had taken refuge. The prevailing wind caused the flames to spread rapidly, and the surrounding fields and forest were soon in a state of conflagration. A mendicant, who happened to be found near the place where the fire had originated, was accused of being the author. He was imprisoned, tried, and condemned to death. As the poor man was being led to execution, Conrad, stricken with remorse, made open confession of his guilt; and in order to repair the damage of which he had been the cause, was obliged to sell all his possessions. Thus reduced to poverty, Conrad retired to a lonely hermitage some distance from Piacenza, while his wife entered the Order of Poor Clares. Later he went to Rome, and thence to Sicily, where for thirty years he lived a most austere and penitential life and worked numerous miracles. He is especially invoked for the cure of hernia. In 1515 Leo X permitted the town of Noto to celebrate his feast, which permission was later extended by Urban VIII to the whole Order of St. Francis. Though bearing the title of saint, Conrad was never formally canonized.
