Thanks to the volunteer efforts of several Brother Knights and parish members, the cost of the project was limited mostly to the acqui- sition of materials. Basilio Crestan, assist- ed by Walter Friedl, laboured mightily to lay new tile in the vestibule, hallway, and a bathroom. Helmut Hofgärtner did his part by painting the bedrooms assisted by pa- rishioner Carlton Ngui, while parishioner Leo Benedet painted the laundry room. In addition, Brothers Dan Dumouchelle, Wal- ter Friedl, Lee Leveque, GK Greg Mac- Donald, Don Panek, and George Pickering provided much of the muscle in doing the groundwork of demolition, site prepara- tion, clean up, and the incessant moving around of furni- ture and appliances. Brother Walter, who in his capacity as Chair of the Parish Properties Committee was in general direction of the project, estimates that these Brother Knights and parish members put in around 180 hours of volunteer work on the project. Thank you gentlemen for another job well done.

General Meeting Guest Speaker – Fraternity At our Council’s January general membership meeting, we were fortunate to have with us a Brother Knight, Detective Sergeant Glenn Gervais of the Fraud Division of the Windsor Police Department, who came to give us a brief and interesting talk and warnings about the many fraudulent schemes being perpetrated on many unsuspecting people especially through the Internet. The presence of Det. Sgt. Gervais among us was no coincidence. He is the son of our Council’s Lec- turer, Brother Paul Gervais, FDD, PGK, and a former member of our Council. We are grateful to Glenn for making time in his busy schedule to give us this talk, and to his father Paul for inviting him.

8 Our Council In Action .... cont’d Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest Awards - Community Salon A in our Parish Family Centre was abuzz with excitement on the evening of January 10th as children who participated in our Council’s Substance Abuse Poster Contest gathered in excited anticipation to fi nd out who the winners of the contest were. Members of our Council’s Cooking Team (Brothers Ron Bardwell, Ken Bondy, Bob Cayea, Mike Charbonneau, Mike Finn, Walter Friedl, Earl Fontaine, Terry Killen, Bill McKay, and John Sabga) had earlier been busy in the kitchen preparing a meal of spaghetti with tomato sauce, meat balls, and garlic bread for those in attendance. Fr. Mike began the proceedings by saying grace before these same Brother Knights served the food to an appreciative crowd. Following the meal, our Council’s Youth Director emceed the event assisted by GK Greg MacDonald and DGK Mike Agius. Fr. Mike gave a short inspirational talk to the chil- dren, encouraging them to stay away from drugs. As in the past few years, RCMP Offi cer Walter Silver and Drug Abuse Counsellor Frank De Angelis gave informative talks to the children and parents present about the dangers of substance abuse. Offi cer Silver spoke about how the makers of illegal drugs often use toxic substances in making them, and how there have been many cases where young people died after their fi rst encounter with illegal drugs. Mr. De Angelis spoke about the psychological and social effects of taking illegal drugs – how people lost all their possessions to drug use, and how the use of illegal drugs often leads to all kinds of mental problems. He described how young people often fall into the trap of drug use because they sometimes feel that they do not fi t in. All speakers urged children to avoid drugs, and to “just say no”. It was then time to present the awards to the winners, certifi cates of participation to every child who participated, and certifi cates of ap- preciation to the school principals and teachers who guided the children in their projects. The winners were as follows:

State Council Family of the Month – Fraternity The people attending the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, January 13th, were in for a pleasant surprise. Just before the conclusion of the Mass, the celebrant, our Council’s Co-Chaplain Fr. Mike Graham, invited DD Josip Banoviç to come to the lectern. Our DD was at the Mass for a special purpose – to make a presentation in which he was assisted by our GK Greg MacDonald. Together they announced that the On- tario State Council had selected the family of Brother David Wilbur as Ontario State Family of the Month for April 2007. They called for- ward Brother Dave, his wife Cathy, and their daughter Rosemary and presented them with the Ontario State Council Family of the Month certifi cate and a beautiful statue portraying the Holy Family. We congratulate Dave, Cathy, and their family on receiving this pres- tigious and well-deserved recognition.

9 Our Council In Action .... cont’d KofC-CWL Breakfast – Fraternity The winter wind blew hard and cold and bitter chilling people’s bones on Sunday, January 20th, but inside the Atonement Parish Family Centre, it was toasty warm. Several members of our Council’s Cooking Team – DGK Mike Agius, Ron Bardwell, Ken Bondy, Mike Charbonneau, Mike Finn, Bill Foris, Walter Friedl, Paul Gervais, Terry Killen, Lee Leveque, GK Greg Mac- Donald, Bruce Mackie, Mike MacLellan Sr., Bill McKay, and John Sabga - had once again come together and did an excel- lent job of preparing a, hot, hearty, appetizing breakfast. Serv- ing the food were the ladies of the Catholic Women’s League council of our parish. DGK Mike Agius’s wife Rita and Bro. Walter Friedl kept busy with ticket sales at the door to the hall. The breakfast, which ran from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., was a successful event with 147 people including 25 children attend- ing and enjoying scrambled eggs, home fries, bacon, sausages, toast and other appetizing food. Initial estimates show a profi t of approximately $480 that our Council will share equally with the CWL council. Our Council’s share will go to our general account, which funds such things as trophies and certifi cates for our Council’s youth programs, cards, fl owers, and fruit bas- kets that our Worthy Chancellor sends to ailing members of our Council, and other non-charity expenses. These funds make it possible for our Council to carry out its fraternal activities and youth program activities. Basketball Free Throw Competition – Youth and Community The sun was shining brightly on Windsor’s snow-covered streets on the afternoon of January 24th, while inside the gym at H. J. Lassaline School the bright faces of 50 children excitedly looking forward to our Council’s Basketball Free Throw competition were a match for the sun’s brightness. The competitors came from L. A. Desmarais School and H. J. Lassaline School, two of the fi ve schools in the Forest Glade community that Brother John Barron, PGK had invited to participate in the competition. Although the competition was sharp as boys and girls competed separately in 5 age categories, it was heart-warming to see the children cheer- ing each other on and applauding every time a competitor scored a basket. We congratulate all the children for this great show of sportsmanship. Erica Hensman, who was our Council’s cham- pion in the girls’ 10-year-old category last year, and then went on to win the Ontario-wide competition in her division, had ev- eryone spellbound as we watched her sink 13 baskets out of the 15 throws allowed. The competition came to a nail-biting end when it was necessary to have a tiebreaker after Olivia Ferguson and Lina Florian had tied scores in regulation competition for 13-year-old girls. Bro. John very ably and effi ciently conducted the event assisted by GK Greg MacDonald, DGK Mike Agius, and Brothers Eduardo Aguilar, John Cassidy, and Walter Friedl, while Bro. Tony Ellul kept busy taking photographs.
