ANOTHER VIEW Turkey’s tantrum he ability to respond smartly to controversy is a measure of responsible leadership. Turkey’s T Recep Tayyip Erdogan just flunked a test. The Turkish president-cum-caliph with a tart tongue has flown off the handle over the U.S. foreign policy turn toward Israel, demonstrating why he is an unreliable ally. Eliminating common ground undermines the basis for friendship. President Trump’s announcement that the United States would move its embassy to Jerusalem, endorsed by a succession of presidents of both parties and long delayed, was treated like poison in the Islamic capitals, where poison abounds. Better than that would have once been expected from Istanbul. No one should have been surprised that Mr. Trump delivered on the promise made by several presidents. The decision was classic Trump, somewhere between fearless and oblivious. And it is classic retribution that an ally of the Turkish strongman has placed a reward of $800,000 on the heads of two U.S. diplomats who dared condemn the Erdogan retaliation against supposed orga- nizers of a 2016 coup attempt. Mr. Erdogan reacted with venom in keeping with A Christmas truce his full salute to the forces that have conducted the siege of Israel in their long war to establish an adjacent uring World War I, there was where folks come together and Palestinian state from which to dislodge the Jewish a brief truce in the trenches reach out, find ways to get along, nation. “Palestine is an innocent victim,” Mr. Erdogan Din war-torn Europe, in the and learn to accept, respect, appre- said in a speech the other day to his masses. “As for cold of winter, during the Christmas ciate one another, and become good Israel, it is a terrorist state, yes, terrorist. 6B FRIDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2017 SPORTS LAKE CITY REPORTER THRASHER Continued From 1B Columbia swim celebrates at banquet football complex. “You can have the greatest coaches in the world, but if your administration doesn’t see things the way you see things and allow you to do things that way, nothing can be achieved,” Fisher said. A year before he left when he signed a long-term extension at Florida State, Fisher had praised Thrasher for “seeing the big pic- ture.” Thrasher had lauded Fisher for being a perfectionist, though noted that dealing with Fisher could be complicated. It’s apparent Thrasher believes Fisher crossed the line, and he defended the program. “Our facilities are pretty good right now,” Thrasher said. “They’re not bad at all and Willie Taggart will tell you he wants to get kids to come here not because of the facilities but because of the education they’re going to get and leadership on the field.” COURTESY PHOTOS Thrasher said the results of a fea- Columbia’s swim team recently held its season ending banquet. Whatever the decision, Florida State’s current facilities are good enough for Taggart. Thrasher has known Taggart for only two weeks, but said the 41-year old coach — who grew up in Palmetto, Florida, as a Seminoles fan — has already made a positive impression on players and the fac- ulty. Thrasher met Taggart for the first time in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Dec. 4 to discuss the job and he was introduced as the school’s 11th foot- ball coach two days later. I hadn’t quite heard that in the way he expressed things,” Thrasher said of Taggert. He may have found his man, but Thrasher didn’t expect to be involved in a coaching search. The president felt when the school gave Fisher an extension last December through 2024 that it was a lifetime contract — it lasted 11 months. Thrasher had to deal with plenty of sticky situations as speaker of the Florida House of Representatives in 1999 and 2000, but said hiring a foot- ball coach was a unique challenge. “I looked in the closet for the playbook on hiring a coach and there wasn’t one,” he said. “Stan had a good plan of working around the potential opportunities and it just worked.” Taggart received a six-year con- tract worth $30 million that also includes paying the buyouts from his previous jobs at Oregon and South Florida.
