Its setting in a religious context makes the whole research unique among research on the topic of international students’ cross-cultural experience. The study aims to address the overarching research question: What is the role of Christian churches in the intercultural experiences of Chinese international students in the UK? There are five sub-questions further developed from both student and church perspectives to comprehensively explore the main issue: 1) Why do non-Christian Chinese students choose to go to churches after they arrive in the UK? 2) Do Christian churches serve as a medium of intercultural encounter for Chinese international students? 3) What is the institutional motivation of the Christian community for attracting international students, especially Chinese students? 4) What are the Christian churches’ strategies in working with Chinese international students? 5) What is more important for students, religious or intercultural experience? The study employs survey, semi-structured in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis as research methods to provide an analysis on international students’ church experiences. In the context of the non-Christian Chinese students’ international mobility and Christianity in China and UK, it investigates the intentions behind and purposes of the intercultural engagement between churches and students. What underpins the interaction between Chinese students and the international Christian community is the interplay between educational, religious, socio-cultural, and psychological factors. The study also presents the western culture, Christianity, as well as the cultural/religious background of Chinese students, and highlights Christian ambitions and missionary strategies (working model) towards non-Christian international students. The findings indicate that social connections with the host environment and the nature of organisation play a significant role in the cross-cultural adaptation and individual development of international students. Besides offering an explanation for the mechanism behind the students’ church participation, the findings also demonstrate that it is Christian churches, rather than universities in the experience of Chinese international students in the UK to facilitate intercultural encounters. The study recommends that universities be encouraged to undertake relevant interventions to facilitate meaningful intercultural engagement among students in the multicultural campus environment. iv     Tang dynasty clothing Continue Unified and prosperous China was founded in the Tang dynasty (618-907). In Chinese history, the Tang dynasty was a period when politics and the economy were well developed and culture and art flourished. The women's dress and the personal decorations of the Tang dynasty were excellent in Chinese history. The clothing materials were fine, the texture was natural, graceful and elegant, and the decorations were brilliant. Although the shapes of the garments were still a continuation of the Han dynasty (206BC-220AD) and the Sui dynasty (581-618), they were influenced by western cultures and arts. High Tang's national power in particular was strong. Trade and cultural exchanges with Korea, Vietnam, Japan, Persian and other countries gradually became more common, sending each other ambassadors and accepting students from other countries. In this way, a special open and romantic dress style and personal decorations were formed. Due to communication with the Western regions, the impact of the dress culture of other minorities on the Tang Court also reflected a change in ideas and concepts. Chinese women were severely constrained by the old Kungfutse or feudal ethical code throughout the ages. The social status of ancient women was very low: they often served under the nameJileren (music performer), Guanji (official performer), Gongji (palace performer) andJiaji (family performer), and were considered playful and goods that rich people can sell and buy. Some women had rebel spirit in the Tang dynasty, so they climbed or jumped over walls and went into the wild to watch beautiful scenes and/or go sightseeing in the spring riding horses with men.

I have come to believe that cultivating personal style is a sustainable way to approach fashion in terms of creating self-awareness in relation to clothes. A couple of years ago I started to experiment with what that meant to me. I decided to stop buying clothes and only make them myself as a tactic to cultivate my personal style of dressing as well as my craft by letting them inform each other. Kim, Chair The transnational adoption industrial complex established between South Korea and the United States following the Korean War initiated what is sometimes called the “Quiet Migration.” Since then, over 200,000 Korean children have been sent abroad, and the transnational, transracial adoption industry has operations set up in dozens of developing countries worldwide which takes thousands of children annually from their natal homes and places them in adoptive families in Western countries. For the past seventy years, the figures of the Korean orphan and adoptee have held significant meaning in the imaginations of by South Korean and American citizens. The sentimental figure of the Korean orphan became the conduit through which both South Koreans and Americans defined their experiences in the Korean War. The transnational Korean adoptee has become an icon of the United States’ commitment to humanitarianism and diversity and South Korea’s modern branding as a sophisticated and internationally-networked nation. This dissertation explores how United States and South Korean culture and society have used the figures of the Korean orphan and Korean adoptee to construct national identities that reflect its citizens as virtuous, cosmopolitan, and unified.
