Bloodwise Sponsored Walk st 1 Tadcaster Scout Group Bowness to Tadcaster Sponsored Walk Friday 29th June to Sunday 1st July 2018 A welcome from John Swift Group Scout Leader, 1st Tadcaster Scout Group. We are inviting everyone associated with the group, past or present, to get involved in an exciting forthcoming sponsored hike in aid of Bloodwise. The group are recreating a sponsored walk that took part 26 years ago, partly in aid of Leukaemia, and are hoping to raise £5000 for the charity. Parents and families are invited to take part in two sections of the walk, Beckermonds to Kettlewell and Wetherby to Tadcaster. T-shirts and wristbands will be on sale at meetings between now and the event, to help advertise the event and help towards our £5000 target. T- shirts are £5 each, wristbands £1. Scouts and supporters do not need a t- shirt to take part, but those who do purchase one can wear this if they so wish over the course of the weekend. Charity and collection buckets are also available if anyone is able to display one. We also have two fantastic prizes available for the Cub and Scout/ Explorer who raise the most funds for the walk. For more information please email me at [email protected] Walk Schedule & Transport Arrangements An interactive map of the route waypoints is available on the website at www.tadcaster-scouts.org.uk, or by following the QR code shown here. The schedule for the walk is shown on the following page. Please note that the 14 young people walking in each team, plus the 2 Leaders, will be transported by minibus from Tadcaster to the start point of their section. They will then be transported by minibus back to Tadcaster when they have completed their section. This will also apply to the Cub Team for Section 5. Any additional Cubs, parents, siblings and supporters will need to make their own way to Kettlewell where we have a designated car park (cost £3 for the day). From this car park they will be transported by minibuses to the start point of that section at Beckermonds. On returning to Kettlewell all additional walkers can then return home. The Cub team will be transported back to Tadcaster by minibus. For Team 10 all Cubs, parents, siblings and supporters will be transported to Wetherby if they require transport. It is expected that these participants will continue all the way back into Tadcaster. All Beavers, parents and supporters for Team 11 will be transported from Tadcaster to the start point at Newton Kyme and then walk back to Tadcaster. Refreshments will be supplied to all walkers at change-over points, but each walker will be required to carry a backpack with additional drinks and snacks for the duration of the walk. To confirm their place we will need a completed Emergency Contact form which is at the end of this pack within a week of adding their name to the list. If we do not receive the form we will then make that place available for another member. We need up to 14 members of the group on each section. They will be transported by minibus from the Bus Station in Tadcaster to the start of their section. They will then be transported back to the bus station on completion of their particular section. Pick up and drop off times will be detailed in the near future to those taking part. Beavers Beavers, with their Leaders, are being asked to complete 1 section of the hike; 11. Newton Kyme (1pm Sun 1st July) back to the Scout Hut, a distance of 3.5 miles. This section of the walk incorporates a short Memorial Service at the riverside near St. Marys Church, Tadcaster, to be conducted by the Reverend Sue Sheriff. Playgroup members will join us here also and hopefully all others who have taken part in the event. We will then all walk back through the town back to the Scout Hut for a BBQ and refreshments. Cubs Cubs, with their Leaders, are being asked to take part in 2 sections of the hike, either of the sections; 5. BECKERMONDS (start 12.30, Saturday 30th June) to KETTLEWELL(finish 17.30, Saturday 30th June). This follows the Dalesway for a total of 10 miles. 10. WETHERBY (start 1100, Sunday 1st July) to NEWTON KYME (finish 1300 Sunday 1st July), a total of 6 miles. Scouts Monday Scouts, with their Leaders, are being asked to complete 2 sections of the hike; 3. DENT (start 0600, Saturday 30th June) to GEARSTONES (finish 0930, Saturday 30th June). This follows the Dalesway for a total of 9.5 miles. 8. MENSTON (start 0500, Sunday 1st July) to HAREWOOD (finish 0800 Sunday 1st July). This follows the Dalesway initially, then the Ebor Way, for a total of 9.5 miles. Friday Scouts, with their Leaders, are being asked to take part in 2 sections of the hike, the sections; 1. BOWNESS (start 19.30, Friday 29th June) to BURNSIDE (finish 2300, Friday 29th June). This follows the Dalesway for a total of 10 miles. 6. KETTLEWELL (start 1730, Saturday 30th June) to BARDEN (finish 21.30 Saturday 30th June). This follows the Dalesway for a total of 12 miles. Explorers Explorers, with their Leaders, are being asked to complete 2 sections of the hike; 2. BURNSIDE (start 2300, Friday 29th June) to DENT (finish 0600, Saturday 30th June). This follows the Dalesway for a total of 18 miles. 7. BARDEN (start 2130, Saturday 30th June) to MENSTON (finish 0500 Sunday 1st July). This follows the Dalesway for a total of 18 miles. Emergency Contact Details All participants will need to complete this form with a contact number in case of emergency. All details will be held by relevant Scouters for the duration of the walk. Families should complete the form even if participants are walking different sections of the route. Because we are limited to 14 young people in many of the sections your child will not be registered until we have the completed emergency contact form below. Places will be allocated in these sections on a first come, first served basis.   • Andrew Franks: Grub Stones Walk
    A walk to the Grub Stones on Burley Moor. 6 miles circular. This walk starts from Menston library and goes up Main Street and then along Bleach Mill Lane. It ascends to cross Moor Road, leading onto Burley Moor, with far reaching views over Burley in Wharfedale and beyond towards Blubberhouses. The highlight of the walk is an outcrop of rocks known locally as Lanshaw Rocks or the Grub Stones or the Castle. It is a naturally occurring rock formation providing a certain amount of shelter with extensive views across the Moor. Ordinance Survey Map ref. SE136448 What also makes this an intriguing location is the amount of unusual carvings and symbols on the rocks themselves. The rock art or carvings are very different to the easily identified modern graffiti that has been chipped away on some areas of the rocks over recent years. For example there are various animals, tribal figure heads and a sun devil. Burial mounds or cairns are common place on the entire Moor and it is not beyond reason that these particular rocks possibly served as a tomb as there is an unnaturally flat area to the rear of the rocks. It is a walk of approximately 6 miles circular. It is strenuous and challenging in parts. A few of the fields have cattle, with a handful of docile Highland cows in the latter part of the walk. A certain amount of caution is needed with traffic when on the way back you need to walk along Moor Road for approximately a quarter of a mile before turning to the right onto Moor Lane leading back down into Menston village.

It is also a good walk for children as there are lots of interesting things to see along the way. The route passes through the Chevin Forest Park where there are lots of information boards about the area generally and specific points of interest. There are also a number of interesting wooden sculptures, many of which will appeal to children. These are very pleasant woodlands, through which to stroll. There are fine vistas of Lower Wharfedale at various points. The walk passes Caley Crags, a series of gritstone boulders popular with climbers and a spot where the famous artist J.M.W. Turner came to paint views of Farnley Hall, which was owned by his friends the Fawkes family. Some of the original tree planting on Otley Chevin was carried out by the Fawkes family in the 1780s. Descendents of the Fawkes gifted the Chevin to the people of Otley in the 1940s. After Caley Crags, the walk circles round to visit the top of the Chevin known as Surprise View. “Chevin” comes from Celtic word(s) meaning ridge.

    East Keswick Parish Council East Keswick Neighbourhood Plan 2020 – 2033 Pre-submission consultation draft Version 30 March 2020 Foreword In 2011 a new Act of Parliament came into force, the Localism Act. One of its central tenets was the concept of a Neighbourhood Plan. It was an idea that a local community might want to take ownership of how its environment developed. It will come as little surprise to those who know this parish that, within a year a number of keen parishioners had put themselves forward, ready to do the work that would create East Keswick’s Neighbourhood Plan. A Neighbourhood Plan has to be created by a properly constituted community body, and the Parish Council fits that remit. The Neighbourhood Plan group was a subcommittee of the Parish Council. Our first meeting was in September 2012. A year later and we were ready for our first public meeting weekend to gather the views of the community. Writing a Neighbourhood Plan is a time consuming and challenging enterprise and due to lack of time and other issues affecting steering group members, there have been a couple of occasions where there has been a long pause in moving this document forward. We started with support from professional consultants who helped provide a framework with which to develop the plan, but over time the document has evolved into a document which specifically reflects the individuality of East Keswick parish. In particular the depth of thought and the insight which has been undertaken by members of East Keswick Wildlife Trust has meant that the Environment section is one of the most detailed in England to date.

    East Keswick Character Assessment Appendix 2 of the East Keswick pre-submission consultation draft Version 9 28th May 2019 1. Introduction East Keswick is a small settlement in the hinterland of Leeds and the wider West Yorkshire conurbation. It incorporates some very valuable qualities which need, in the public interest, to be protected and enhanced. This Character Assessment relates to the village and its surrounding countryside up to the parish boundaries. It represents the views of the community of East Keswick and is intended to guide the design of new development proposals and inform decisions taken in relation to development in and around the village. Historic England’s ‘Local Heritage Listing’ was used to identify buildings which are local heritage assets, both inside and outside the Conservation area. Relevant designations The village and the parish of East Keswick contain certain key features which enjoy particular protection under the existing statutory and planning policy framework. This includes the following: • a large part of the village is designated as a Conservation Area (see map CA2); • there are seven listed buildings and two milestones within the Parish of East Keswick which are the subject of special statutory protections and controls (see map CA1); • the Green Belt boundary is tightly drawn around the built up area of East Keswick village and also the built up area adjacent to Collingham village (see maps CA2 and CA3). There are very strong national and local policies against inappropriate development in areas designated as Green Belt; • the countryside surrounding the village is designated as a Special Landscape Area, the visual character and amenity of which is specially protected in local policy; • the Parish of East Keswick includes one Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) (Keswick Fitts) and two Sites of Ecological and Geological Interest (SEGI) (Ox Close Wood and parts of the River Wharfe upstream and downstream) • Keswick Marsh and Frank Shires Pasture are designated as Local Wildlife Sites.

    Appendix 1 Executive Summary The Leeds Rights of Way Improvement Plan (ROWIP), forms a ten year management plan, setting out areas for consideration and improvement across the public rights of way network within the Leeds district. The ROWIP links to aims and priorities at both a national and local level, such as the West Yorkshire Local Transport Plan, Vision for Leeds, Leeds Strategic Plan, Cultural, Sport and Recreation Strategies. As the Local Authority, we have a statutory duty to publish a Rights of Way Improvement Plan for Leeds which we see as an aspirational document highlighting improvements (which in part) are over and above the basic statutory requirements. This ROWIP provides an opportunity to bid for additional funding on an informed basis. This in turn will inform the Council’s future investment decisions concerning improvements to the public rights of way network in Leeds. Our draft Plan was subject to a 12 week statutory consultation period during which time, comments were received. Following this public consultation period, and taking into account any comments and suggestions made, the final Plan is now ready to be published,. The Leeds ROWIP will be reviewed again within 10 years. This Rights of Way Improvement Plan covers eight main sections and begins by setting out the legislative requirements and guidance on how to prepare such plans as part of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act, 2000. In particular, we have focused on the following three areas of assessment: a) The extent to which rights of way meet the present and likely future needs of the public.
