ANALYZED BY U ~ 8., GEOLOGICAL SURVEY DURING A PROGRAM

OF SAMP LING MINE, lflLL, AND SMEL~rER PRODUCTS

By

Mo Lo Hall and Ao Pe BUtler, Jr.,

In 1942 the Geological Survey began to collect 9 in response •to are-

quest made by the Wa1r Production Board, samples of mine, millj and smelter

productse J\bout 1~400 SUCh SantplE~S were COllected and analyzed Spectro~

graphically for about 20 elements that were of ·~trategic importance, in

o~ier to determine whe~ner any of the products analyzed might be possible

sources o.f some o.f the needed elementso When attention was directed to

radioactive elements in 19J~3 !I most o.f the samples were ~canned fpr radio-

activity, Part of the work wa.s dc•n~ on behalf or the Divisi on o~ RB.w

The sources, mine, mill, smelter, or prospect, .from which these s~ples

were collected, the kind of material samplep .. i.,e. ores, concentrates~

middlings, tailing~, flue dustsf .aLnd so forth, and the radioactivity of the

samples are list~d in this report o Samples of materials collected in the

course of the Geological Surveyus investigations for uranium are excluded~

but about 500 such samples were analyzed spectrog.raphically for some or all

of the same ~C elements sought in the samples that are the subject of this

reporte Most of the samples were tested only for their radioactivity, but - . . . a few ·were analyzed chemically for uranium, The radioactivity of many of

the samples t ested in the earl y screening was determ:i.ned only qualitatively.

Several samples were tested at one time~ and if the count obtained did not

In general, the rough screening served as a basis for separating samples in which the radioactiv- ity amounted to less than 0.003 percent equivalent uranium from those in. which it exceeded that amount. Some aspects of various phases of the in- vestigation of radioact~vity in thes·e samples have been reported in various

In general, also, a range in grade is given for several produc~~ from the same locality rather than the radioactivity of each ino.ividual component. However, in a fe·w cases.t the radioactivities of individual p~oducts are disti~4Uished in the tables. Where analyses f9r ura..n.ium v1ere also made, the results are expressed in this manner:
