The Doctrine of the Most Holy Trinity: Key Points There is but one, true God. There are three Persons in the one God and each of these Persons is fully God. Nobody made God. He always was, is now, and always will be. The mystery of the Holy Trinity is the mystery of God in Himself. The doctrine of the Holy Trinity is the most fundamental and essential truth of the Faith. The sacred mystery of the Holy Trinity is the source of all the other mysteries of the Faith. Sacred mysteries are not things we can’t know anything about, but holy realities that we cannot know everything about. The word Trinity is a contraction of two words: Tri – Unity. It was coined by the Church to help us better understand the sacred mystery of the three divine Persons in one God. The doctrine of the Holy Trinity is a revealed truth. Without God’s direct revelation, we could not know that the one God is a Trinity of Persons, cf. Matthew 28:19 Nature answers the question what something is. What the divine Persons are is God. Person gives us the answer who someone is. Who God is, is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This is why when somebody is baptized, the formula that must be used is: I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. None of the three divine Persons is either of the others; each is wholly Himself. Yet each is fully God. -

Joseph Blankholm Department of Religious Studies University of California, Santa Barbara Secularism, Humanism, and Secular Humanism: Terms and Institutions Abstract: This chapter considers recent American attempts to recognize secular humanism as a religion in light of more than a century of debates over the religiosity of secularism and humanism. It offers a history of these terms’ codependent evolution in the United States by focusing on the individuals, groups, and institutions that have adopted them and shaped their meanings. The chapter also argues that those who use these terms today bear forth a fraught and sometimes self-contradicting inheritance. In order to recognize the stakes of contemporary struggles over the meaning and purpose of secularism, one needs a deeper understanding of how the term has come to bear its traces and how it fits within a shifting constellation of labels and concepts. Keywords: Secularism, Humanism, Secular Humanism, Organized Nonbelievers, Secular Activism, Separation of Church and State In October of 2014, a federal district judge in the state of Oregon ruled that secular humanism is a religion, at least for legal purposes involving the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment. The judge sided with the lawsuits’ plaintiffs, who argued that a humanist inmate at a federal prison should receive certain rights reserved solely for religious groups. The decision arrived a year after the U.S. Army began recognizing humanism as a religious preference, and in the lawsuit’s wake, the Federal Bureau of Prisons granted the same formal recognition. This was not the first time that federal courts have called secular humanism a religion, nor does it settle the question of its religiosity for humanists and their opponents. -

Lalitha Senior Lecturer, Department of Mathematics The Hindu College, Machilipatnam ABSTRACT Humanism is a philosophy, world view, or life stance based on naturalism-the conviction that the universe or nature is all that exists or is real. Humanism serves, for many humanists, some of the psychological and social functions of a religion, but without belief in deities, transcendental entities, miracles, life after death, and the supernatural. Humanists seek to understand the universe by using science and its methods of critical inquiry-logical reasoning, empirical evidence, and skeptical evaluation of conjectures and conclusions-to obtain reliable knowledge. Humanists affirm that humans have the freedom to give meaning, value, and purpose to their lives by their own independent thought, free inquiry, and responsible, creative activity. Humanists stand for the building of a more humane, just, compassionate, and democratic society using a pragmatic ethics based on human reason, experience, and reliable knowledge-an ethics that judges the consequences of human actions by the well-being of all life on Earth. Acta Theologica 2011:2 F England SACRED TEXTS AND MYSTIC MEANING: AN INQUIRY INTO CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY AND THE INTERPRETIVE USE OF THE BIBLE ABSTRACT This article endeavours merely to highlight four areas in the increasingly fertile and enriching field of Christian Spirituality which may demand some further scrutiny by scholars: (i) the observation of the ‘open’ and ‘live’ quality of classic sacred texts; (ii) the attention owed to the informing worldviews of both authors and readers; (iii) the specific use of language and modes of exegesis employed in the Christian spiritual quest, and (iv) the issue of the highly personal and narrative nature of Christian spirituality and how it may be monitored. 1. INTRODUCTION Sacred books invoke wars. The causae bellorum reside in the claims by those who brandish a particular holy text that it alone possesses the singular and defining “truth” about the nature of human existence in its ultimate and conclusive sense. Thus, such adherents, in subscribing to the tenets of a singular deposit of sacred wisdom, maintain that the definitive answers to the fundamental questions about the purpose of creative inception, and the meaning of the threshold crossings of birth and death, reside in their holy book. And, moreover, if these particular writings do provide the incontrovertible narrative veracity about such profound matters, then it is affirmed that it is incumbent upon all humanity to subscribe to that unique, original, and unsurpassed corpus of eternal bearing and relevance. Kinlaw Revival depends on grace, and the fruit of revival is holiness. Revival depends on grace because dead people cannot bring themselves back to life. Even Jesus, the eternal Son, does not raise himself from the dead. It is the Spirit who gives him life. There is no true revival without resultant holiness. Trees that have been made alive again are always fruitful. And here is where Wesleyan theology best recommends itself as revival theology.”2 Beth Felker Jones Introduction One classical definition of theology is “faith seeking understanding.” Knowledge and experience of God, whether individual or corporate, seeks deeper consideration through reflection and study. Anselm writes that believers examine God’s revelation “not for the sake of attaining to faith by means of reason but that they may be gladdened by understanding and meditating on those things that they believe.” 3 Augustine teaches similarly; experience of God incites Christians to apprehend what they believe; what they can hope for; and what they ought to love.4 Part of theology’s work accordingly is to find language to express the Christian experience of God; to try to put into words who God is and what God has done, is doing, and will do, while acknowledging the inadequacy of any verbal or visual signs in the face of an incomprehensible reality. -

POSITIVISM AND HUMANISM BY EDWIN H. WILSON THE process of integrating the new world view of science to the rehgious needs of man is going on continually. One sees it taking place in the ranks of modernism. ^len like Harry Emer- son Fosdick/ Reinhold Neibuhr,- and Russell Henry Stafford^ have made notable concession to the position of the new humanists al- though eager to retain old symbols. In the Unitarian denomination the issue is more clear cut. with friendly controversy openly en- gaged in between theists and humanists. In this controversy the terms Positivism and Humanism are continually confused. The effort has been seemingly to try to heap all the old sins, real or alleged, of Positivism upon the New Humanism and to push the latter scapegoat fashion over the cliff into oblivion. By Positivism I understand these critics to mean the philosophy and cult of Auguste Comte, the French social theorist of the nineteenth cen- tury. The repeated confusion of the two terms led me, while I was studying abroad, to supplement the thesis I had already written upon The Religion of Humanity According to Auguste Comte and Alfred Loisy with an investigation at first hand of what is left of the movement. This investigation brought me into immediate contact with the present leaders, both in England and France and access to information upon the movement in South America. My conclusion is that the two movements are so unlike that the effort to use Positivism as a shibboleth for Humanism is not justified on the grounds either of content or of form. -
