WESLEYAN WORSHIP AND THE MEANS OF GRACE Robert W. Gribben The first of three keynote addresses given at the 7th Australasian Centre for Wesleyan Research Conference, Brisbane 12-13 August 2016 This article explores the question, ‘What is Wesleyan worship?’ by investigating John Wesley’s use of the means of grace and of hymn singing. The role of hymns as a valuable mode of teaching doctrine is highlighted. The liturgical minimalism of nineteenth-century Methodism and the impact of revivalism are identified as contributing causes of the loss of Wesley’s worship practices among Methodists. ____________________________________________________ Introduction I had better begin by defining my terms. My title was not ‘Methodist worship’, though these lectures will be very brief if Methodism is not included! I do, however, want to keep Mr Wesley - as his disciples still call John - as my plumbline. As I was preparing for this weekend, I was also reading - I am embarrassed to say, for the first time - David Hempton’s ground-breaking study, Methodism, Empire of the Spirit.1 It is a breathtaking survey and reframing of the Methodist movement, and perhaps the first which adequately embraces both its British and its American forms. It is also most eloquently written and a joy to read. Hempton breaks the pattern of writing about Wesley and Methodism by those who are devoted to, and defensive of the man and his movement. That, I suspect, is where I still was when I began; I hope I have learned from Hempton. One thing Hempton and others have borne in upon me in recent times, though a glance at the membership of the World Methodist Council would confirm it, is that there is no one single way of being ‘Wesleyan’. -

Scenes and Means of Grace • Gilson Waldkoenig 327 Theme Articles Scenes and Means of Grace By Gilson Waldkoenig Abstract: The Word, Baptism, and Holy Communion—key means of grace according to the Lutheran tradition—take place in a web of earthly conditions whenever they are celebrated. Generating their own scenes of grace, the means of grace give voice, sense of place, and creativity where those are otherwise threatened. Other scenes of grace complement the means of grace, similarly bringing voice, place, and creativity in the face of environmental and social injustices. Martin Luther’s affirmation of Christ’s presence in creation, both in means of grace and throughout God’s world, is a strategic and meaningful threshold for Christians to engage environment and justice while continuing to listen and look for the grace in Christ that feeds and shapes them. The Doctrine of the Most Holy Trinity: Key Points There is but one, true God. There are three Persons in the one God and each of these Persons is fully God. Nobody made God. He always was, is now, and always will be. The mystery of the Holy Trinity is the mystery of God in Himself. The doctrine of the Holy Trinity is the most fundamental and essential truth of the Faith. The sacred mystery of the Holy Trinity is the source of all the other mysteries of the Faith. Sacred mysteries are not things we can’t know anything about, but holy realities that we cannot know everything about. The word Trinity is a contraction of two words: Tri – Unity. It was coined by the Church to help us better understand the sacred mystery of the three divine Persons in one God. The doctrine of the Holy Trinity is a revealed truth. Without God’s direct revelation, we could not know that the one God is a Trinity of Persons, cf. Matthew 28:19 Nature answers the question what something is. What the divine Persons are is God. Person gives us the answer who someone is. Who God is, is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This is why when somebody is baptized, the formula that must be used is: I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. None of the three divine Persons is either of the others; each is wholly Himself. Yet each is fully God. -

ARMINIAN-WESLEYAN UNDERSTANDING OF HOLINESS IN THE CHRISTIAN LIFE (Reaction to the paper by Jerry Rice) By Ruthie I. Córdova Country of Origin: Peru Serving in: Costa Rica When we refer to our Arminian-Wesleyan theological heritage it appears that of this heritage we only know about the Wesleyan aspects and very little or almost nothing about the Arminian aspects. It is true that Jacobus Arminius contributed in a very valuable way in the theological thinking we now do. He had a key role in the history of the church and especially in Holland. As a theologian, Arminius clearly expounded God’s intention in regard to free salvation of the human being through Jesus Christ and man’s responsibility to accept or reject this grace, when facing very strong propaganda and the condemning teaching of predestination. This affirmation brought other implications to the understanding of the dynamic relationship between God and man, the action of divine grace in the world, in the spiritual growth of the person and the human response to these actions of God’s love. These were the foundations for the development of doctrines that would make a difference in the lives of the believers and that gave impulse to the evangelistic enterprise of the Wesleys a century later. The corrections proposed by Arminus to Calvinist teaching are the distinctives of his theology and are presented in a clear, brief and concise manner in Jerry Rice’s paper. However, the differences between Arminius’s concepts of perfection and sanctification with those of Wesely are not discussed according to what the author shows. -

Acta Theologica 2011:2 F England SACRED TEXTS AND MYSTIC MEANING: AN INQUIRY INTO CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY AND THE INTERPRETIVE USE OF THE BIBLE ABSTRACT This article endeavours merely to highlight four areas in the increasingly fertile and enriching field of Christian Spirituality which may demand some further scrutiny by scholars: (i) the observation of the ‘open’ and ‘live’ quality of classic sacred texts; (ii) the attention owed to the informing worldviews of both authors and readers; (iii) the specific use of language and modes of exegesis employed in the Christian spiritual quest, and (iv) the issue of the highly personal and narrative nature of Christian spirituality and how it may be monitored. 1. INTRODUCTION Sacred books invoke wars. The causae bellorum reside in the claims by those who brandish a particular holy text that it alone possesses the singular and defining “truth” about the nature of human existence in its ultimate and conclusive sense. Thus, such adherents, in subscribing to the tenets of a singular deposit of sacred wisdom, maintain that the definitive answers to the fundamental questions about the purpose of creative inception, and the meaning of the threshold crossings of birth and death, reside in their holy book. And, moreover, if these particular writings do provide the incontrovertible narrative veracity about such profound matters, then it is affirmed that it is incumbent upon all humanity to subscribe to that unique, original, and unsurpassed corpus of eternal bearing and relevance.
