Welcome to the graduation celebration for Green City Force’s (GCF) 20th Cohort! Green City Force’s AmeriCorps program prepares young adults, aged 18-24, who reside at NYCHA and have a high school diploma or equivalency for careers through green service. Being part of the Service Corps is a full-time commitment encompass- ing service, training, and skills-building experiences related to sustainable buildings and communities. GCF is committed to the ongoing success of our alumni, who num- ber nearly 550 with today’s graduates. The Corps Members of Cohort 20 represent a set of diverse experiences, hailing from 20 NYCHA developments and five boroughs. This cohort was the largest cohort as- signed to Farms at NYCHA, totaling 50 members for 8 and 6 months terms of service. The Cohort exemplifies our one corps sustainable cities service in response to climate resilience and community cohesion through environmental stewardship, building green infrastructure and urban farming, and resident education at NYCHA. We have a holistic approach to sustainability and pride ourselves in training our corps in a vari- ety of sectors, from composting techniques and energy efficiency to behavior change outreach. Cohort 20 are exemplary leaders of sustainability and have demonstrated they can confidently use the skills they learn to make real contributions to our City. Cohort 20’s service inspired hundreds of more residents this season to be active in their developments and have set a new standard for service that we are proud to have their successors learn from and exceed for even greater impact.

    THE OFFICE OF THE QUEENS BOROUGH PRESIDENT Strategic Policy Statement 2014 Melinda Katz Queens Borough President The Borough of Queens is home to more than 2.3 million residents, representing more than 120 countries and speaking more than 135 languages1. The seamless knit that ties these distinct cultures and transforms them into shared communities is what defines the character of Queens. The Borough’s diverse population continues to steadily grow. Foreign-born residents now represent 48% of the Borough’s population2. Traditional immigrant gateways like Sunnyside, Woodside, Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, Corona, and Flushing are now communities with the highest foreign-born population in the entire city3. Immigrant and Intercultural Services The immigrant population remains largely underserved. This is primarily due to linguistic and cultural barriers. Residents with limited English proficiency now represent 28% of the Borough4, indicating a need for a wide range of social service support and language access to City services. All services should be available in multiple languages, and outreach should be improved so that culturally sensitive programming can be made available. The Borough President is actively working with the Queens General Assembly, a working group organized by the Office of the Queens Borough President, to address many of these issues. Cultural Queens is amidst a cultural transformation. The Borough is home to some of the most iconic buildings and structures in the world, including the globally recognized Unisphere and New York State Pavilion. Areas like Astoria and Long Island City are establishing themselves as major cultural hubs. In early 2014, the New York City Council designated the area surrounding Kaufman Astoria Studios as the city’s first arts district through a City Council Proclamation The areas unique mix of adaptively reused residential, commercial, and manufacturing buildings serve as a catalyst for growth in culture and the arts.

    Historic Lower Manhattan To many people Lower Manhattan means financial district, where the large buildings are designed to facilitate the exchange of money. The buildings, streets and open spaces, however, recall events that gave birth to a nation and have helped shape the destiny of western civilization. Places such as St. Paul's Chapel and Federal Hall National Memorial exemplify a number of sites which have been awarded special status by the Federal Government. The sites appearing in this guide are included in the following programs which have given them public recognition and helped to assure their survival. National Park Service Since its inauguration in 1916, the National Park Service has been dedicated to the preservation and management of our country's unique national, historical and recreational areas. The first national park in the world—Yellowstone—has been followed by the addition of over 300 sites in the 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. National Park areas near and in Manhattan are: Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site, Fire Island National Seashore, Gateway National Recreation Area, Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, Hamilton Grange National Memorial, and General Grant National Memorial. National Historic Landmarks National Park Service historians study and evaluate historic properties throughout the country.     2016 COMMUNITY HEALTH NEEDS ASSESSMENT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Community Health Needs Assessment, 2016 Update Purpose of the Community Health Needs Assessment This 2016 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) updates the CHNA completed in 2013 to meet the requirements of Section 9007 of the 2010 federal law, The Affordable Care Act (“ACA”). The ACA requires that any tax-exempt, IRS- designated 501(c) (3) hospital complete or update a publicly-available, comprehensive CHNA every three years in order to document the extent to which it understands the unique characteristics and needs of the local communities it serves, and responds to these needs by delivering meaningful and effective community benefit through clinical services and other programming. Required Components A CHNA report has five required components: 1) Definition of community served 2) A prioritized description of the significant health needs of the community 3) Transparency in the process and methods used to conduct the CHNA, including how it took into account input from the community served and prioritized community health needs 4) A description of the resources potentially available to address the identified significant prioritized community health needs 5) An evaluation of the impact of actions taken to address the significant health needs identified in the previous CHNA report (June 2013). A CHNA report is considered complete when it is adopted by a governing body of the facility and made widely available to the public. Community Served NYC Health + Hospitals serve all New Yorkers in every neighborhood in New York City regardless of their ability to pay. Addressing disparity throughout New York City, NYC Health + Hospitals is the safety-net for the uninsured and underserved in New York City.

Because of time and space limitations this paper is limited to Cheney Brothers' activities in New York City which are, but a fraction, of a much larger story. Brothers and beginnings Like many other enterprising Americans in the 1830s, brothers Charles (1803-1874), Ward (1813-1876), Rush (1815-1882), and Frank (1817-1904), Cheney became engaged in the time consuming, difficul t business of raising silk worms until they discovered that speculation on the morus morticaulis, the white mulberry tree upon which the worms fed, might be far more profitable. As with all high profit operations the tree business was a high-risk venture, throwing many investors including the Cheney brothers, into bankruptcy.
