The Principal’s Report Highlights the key activities, events, and successes of the past year and briefly describes major new initiatives to be undertaken over the next year. The College has a mission statement, which is reflected in the motto of the College— ‘Jyotirhi Vigyanam’ Meaning, ‘Light is Science’, to be elaborated as ‘Science explores the Light of Truth’ It is the mission statement of the College and expressed in the motto. The fundamental aims of the institution is to provide a congenial environment for all round development of students and generating attitude of integrity, hard work, honesty, fairness and tolerance so that they give off their very best along with equipping themselves for good career prospects and at the same time remain ready for the service of the nation. College functions in a fairly decentralized manner as reflected in the democratic functioning of the staff council, delegating authority further through constituting societies, committees and Departmental committees. The college is committed to uphold highest standards of quality in academic and extra-curricular activities. The quality improvement strategies include participation of faculty in Conferences / Seminars / Workshops and also by adopting ICT methods of teaching. Some faculty members have been deputed to attend the refresher and orientation programmes conducted by Academic Staff College. It has enabled them to keep abreast of the latest trends in their respective fields. Departmental Committees take all the necessary steps for successful implementation of the academic plans and provide the feedback. The faculty members are allowed to participate in and contribute to the deliberations. In addition to the above, all Heads of departments and Professor-in-charge of autonomy plan the academic activities and framing of proposals during their frequent meetings. In the meetings responsibilities are defined and communicated to the staff. The teaching as well as the non-teaching and supporting staff follows instructions in the interest of the institution. Glorious past and the rich traditions led for the award of the “Special Heritage Status” from UGC, New Delhi. It is worth mentioning that out of the 73 colleges shortlisted from all over the country, only 19 were selected to grant status; and this College is only from MP recognized for this status. The strongest asset of the college is its faculty. Almost all of the faculty members hold Ph.D. degree except a few, who are presently pursuing their doctoral research work or have been submitted for the award. Several research projects are ongoing in the college. The research work is supported by the various funding agencies viz. UGC, DST, DRDO, ICMR, IITM etc. The NAAC peer team (last visit) has highly appreciated the research work of this college which reads as “Good quality research work of international repute by the faculty member within limited facility” at the college level. Departments of Botany, Chemistry, Environment Science, Geology, Physics and Zoology of this college are recognized research centers of Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya, Jabalpur. Presently, 86 registered research Annual Report October 2017 to September 2018 (RUSA) Govt. Science College, Jabalpur – MP 3 scholars are pursuing their research work under supervision of various staff members of this college. 20 scholars from various departments were awarded Ph.D. degree in the last session. Faculty members published their research in national and international journals of repute and participated in various conferences, seminars, workshops, etc. chaired the session/ presented their research papers. The College publishes a Peer Reviewed Journal of Multiple Sciences namely ‘Sci-Fronts’ having ISSN: 0974-5297 every four month a year; the College activity is published in ‘Mahavidyalaya Samachar’ halfyearly, and an annual students’ magazine ‘Jyortirmayee’. A well equipped Central Instrumentation Lab is established in the college. Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, Carbon Dioxide incubator, UV-visible double beam spectrophotometer, HPLC, High Precision Balance and FTIR Spectrophotometer are available for use by the researchers, PG students and faculties. Process of purchasing ‘Table Top X-ray Diffractometer’ out of the grant sanctioned under DST-FIST scheme is in progress. UGC has sanctioned Rs. 1.5 crore in CPE-III phase. Dr. G. Subba Rao Memorial Scholarship (each Rupees.20,000/-) is awarded to four students of Geology at Post Graduate level; the scholarship is sponsored by Shri Narayan Rao based in Hyderabad. DST INSPIRE fellowship awarded to students on the basis of marks in 12th examination. Besides academic activities the students actively participate in various intercollegiate competitions in sports, youth festival and got due appreciation of their talent by representing RD University teams. The College has rich infrastructure for sports activities and it is the ‘Lead College’ for sports. The NCC and NSS boys and girls units of the College actively and effectively trained and motivated students for service of nation. ‘Swami Vivekananda Career Guidance and Personality Development Cell organised various programmes throughout the academic calendar for students to create awareness regarding career opportunities to suit their inclinations and multifaceted personality development. With the UGC grants for SC/ST/OBC and minorities; Remedial coaching, entry in service coaching and NET coaching classes were organised. A new common room for boys was constructed, and boys and girls hostels were renovated. 2. Overview (i) Vision, Mission and Objectives of the college Vision: The vision of the college is “to provide students with an environment for all round development of their mental, physical, aesthetic, social and spiritual potentials and generating attitude of integrity, honesty, fairness and tolerance, so that they give off their very best. Excellence in these areas is to be interpreted in terms of putting the skills developed in each to equip themselves for good career prospects and at the same time, remain at the service of the socially discriminated groups in our country, with a view to setting up a society where all have equal opportunities.” Mission: Annual Report October 2017 to September 2018 (RUSA) Govt.
