Becky and Mike have been successful in providing a Catholic education for all four of their children. Their daughter, Kylie, recently graduated from Notre Dame Cathedral Latin High School (NDCL). He didn’t always wait to be asked. He could see for himself where he could make a difference in other people’s lives.”

The Samuel H. and Maria Miller Foundation is led by Eleanor Fanslau, Brad Knapp, Kim Scott, Gaby Miller, and Abe Miller.

“This is what Mr. Miller would have done,” says Eleanor Fanslau, who served as Sam’s secretary throughout his lifetime. “He would have seen this crisis and how important it was to do something for people who are in need of help.”

The Emergency Assistance Fund, which is managed by the Catholic Community Foundation, is being used to assist people impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, addressing immediate basic needs such as food, rent, and utilities. The Fund is providing resources to Catholic Charities, which is on the frontlines and is committed to the mission of helping people of all faiths, races, and creeds. Since the start of the pandemic, requests for Catholic Charities Emergency Assistance has risen dramatically. During the height of the crisis, Pat worked on the quarantine unit, where residents were confined to their rooms for 14 days. Staff from the activities department would bring cards, coloring books, and other activities to help residents pass the time in their rooms. “People were missing their families, their roommates, and their normal activities,” says Pat. “The staff was very, very busy providing care.” To help residents get through the long days, Pat did what she loves to do best:

“I developed a relationship with people and talked to them about their families, what type of work they did, and cheered them up. I often sing a song as I enter the room or play a little guessing game with residents. Usually, I’m rewarded with a smile.”

Pat is proud to work in such an excellent rehabilitation program that promotes independence for people. She cannot count all the individuals she has helped over the years who return to St. Augustine Health Campus after their rehabilitation just to visit and say thank you. “Sometimes, you don’t immediately recognize someone because they are well and look completely different,” says Pat. “When I see them healthy and happy, that’s the reward of a job well done,” says Pat.

In addition to everyday expenses, many in his community are paying lawyers to work on their immigration cases; and those expenses do not stop even when people are laid off.

As of the end of May, Fr. Bill has been able to help stabilize 25 families with nearly $10,000 of assistance from the Emergency Response Fund.

ESTATE PLANNING DURING THE COVID-19 CRISIS BY LISA J. ROTH, ESQ.

The past few months have been challenging to say the least. The COVID-19 crisis has forced all of us to make significant changes in our lives and has left us with uncertainty as to what may come next. Having an estate plan in place is important at any time, and it is a topic that many individuals have been thinking about more than usual lately. Some are contacting their attorneys to complete plans that they started, but never finalized. Others may have had it on their to-do list for years, but just never got around to it. Whatever the case may be, there is no time like the present to address your planning.

A basic estate plan should include a will, durable power of attorney, health care documents (living will and health care power of attorney), and, in many cases, a trust. A will or a trust addresses how you want your estate to be handled upon your passing including the distribution of your assets and who will be responsible for administering your estate. If you have minor children, it is important to have a will to designate guardians for them. Through a durable power of attorney, you designate an agent to handle your financial matters on your behalf while you are still alive. Health care documents allow you to appoint an agent to make medical decisions for you and to carry out your wishes with respect to your care and treatment in the event that you are unable to do so yourself.

The past few months have also provided an opportunity to reflect on your values and the legacy that you would like to pass on to loved ones and organizations that are important to you. There are many ways that you can incorporate those into your estate planning including bequests in your will or trust; designating a charity - such as your parish, Catholic Charities or any of the many ministries of the Church - as the beneficiary of your IRA or 401(k), life insurance policy or other financial accounts; utilization of a charitable gift annuity; or through a donor advised fund (DAF) such as a Catholic Community Foundation DAF.

Most estate planning attorneys are working remotely now and are available by telephone, email, and video conferencing to assist you with your planning and there are many options available for completing and signing your documents. The staff at the Catholic Community Foundation is also available to discuss options for your charitable planning at this time. To learn more, please contact Mary Lou Ozimek, 216-696-6525 x4070, [email protected], at the Catholic Community Foundation.

SOPHIE’S LEGACY: living and giving with purpose Sophie Kosem, a member of St. Mary Parish in Collinwood, has been extraordinarily

generous to the Diocese of Cleveland. Both she and her brother, Fr. Frank Kosem, are

members of the Heritage Society, having made provisions for the Church in their wills. In

2018, Sophie established a Donor Advised Fund with the Catholic Community Foundation

and named Fr. Frank and their nephew, Tom Celestina, as successor advisors. This past

year, Sophie made a generous pledge to the Heart of the Shepherd campaign with a gift

that honors her family, her faith, and support for the priesthood.

That night, the family would leave their homeland in darkness – a life or death decision as they feared wartime persecution. The family walked on foot to Austria, where they lived in an open field for six weeks. Eventually, Sophie, her mother and father, and five of her six siblings moved to a camp for displaced persons. After living there for more than three years, the family immigrated to America.

In a book that compiles the memories of the Kosem family children,

Sophie writes: “God has called each one of us to existence for a purpose. I have to complete the ministry God has given me for my life.”

During her 92-years, Sophie has been fulfilling her purpose, which she defines: “What can I do for my neighbor? Our purpose is to get closer to God; and, we are not complete until we close our eyes.”

Sophie’s life of faith and family was nurtured at home amidst the turmoil of war and relocation by loving parents and a strong Slovenian community. She worked as a nurse until she retired at age 90, spending most of those years as a school nurse for the Cleveland Board of Education.

Sophie’s life of service rarely slows down. She volunteers to visit people in hospice, sponsors seminarians in Slovenia, and with her sister Mari, has supported Catholic missions to aid Slovenian priests and nuns. Her nephew, Tom Celestina, who is employed by the U.S. State Department and served for three years at the embassy in Slovenia, sees the passing of Catholic and Slovenian values from one generation to the next. “I have 19 nieces and nephews, who are all connected to their Catholic faith. ANNUAL REPORT 2019 13 SHARITA AND SHAYE BUILD FRIENDSHIPS THROUGH CATHOLIC CHARITIES’ SATURDAY SCHOOL

Twins Sharita and Shaye share a sweet demeanor, a passion for skating, and autism. Buoyed by their parents’ positive attitude, the twins live with purpose. “God sends us down here for a reason,” says Sharita. “Maybe it’s to preserve our world and fill it with love and inclusion and unity.”

That sense of unity permeates Saturday School at OLA-St. Joseph Center, a program that brings together adults with disabilities to continue their education. Saturday School also seeks to foster independence and unite participants as part of the Catholic community.

“The program is educational and social,” says Shaye. “I like delving into things and figuring out things with math.” Through Saturday School, Shaye and her sister build lasting friendships. “We’re one big happy family,” she says. “It’s an inclusion revolution.”

On the heels of several record setting years, the 2019 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal exceeded its goal of $13.5 million, raising $14 million to support social services throughout the eight-county Diocese of Cleveland.

18 GRATIAS agere COMMUNITY IS AT THE HEART OF DEACON JOE’S PRIESTLY FORMATION

My seminary experience was pretty awesome,” starts Deacon Joseph Robinson, who attended Saint Mary Seminary and is awaiting ordination to begin his assignment as parochial vicar for St. Peter Parish in North Ridgeville. “Living in community and praying in community, being with everyone in classes and for meals, this was a huge blessing. My experience highlights, especially now, how important that example of community will be for my future as a parish priest.” Deacon Joe says his parish internships at St. Sebastian Parish in Akron and Ss. Robert and William Parish in Euclid made it possible to see the fulfillment of a parish community – something quite familiar because of his experience in the seminary.

Six years ago, Deacon Joe entered the Saint Mary Seminary as a Pre- Theologian after completing a Bachelors of Science degree at Cleveland State University. Seminary coursework, especially philosophy, challenged his approach to formation in general. “I found out that there were more ways of doing things than my way,” he says with a laugh.

With his days in the seminary completed and ordination pushed back to August because of the pandemic, Deacon Joe looks at this “holding pattern” as a time for God to continue forming him. “Who knows what God has in store for us?” he says. “I think God is using this time to form us more spiritually and especially in trusting Him.”

“My time at the seminary seemed to go by so fast,” says Deacon Joe. “Our formation would not be possible without the support of the faithful. I am very thankful that I had the opportunity to truly and fully engage with the formation process. That would not have happened without the support of others.”

Giving to passHERITAGE on SOCIETYa legacy of faith. Members of the Heritage Society understand the importance of passing on the legacy of our Catholic faith to the next generation. By making plans for a bequest or other future gift to strengthen the ministries of the Diocese of Cleveland, these dedicated Catholics inspire others to help build God’s kingdom on earth. We gratefully recognize and honor the individuals who have included their parish or a diocesan ministry such as Catholic Charities, Catholic Education, or Priestly Formation in their estate plans.

FINDING IN THE DARKNESS

BY REVEREND DAN SCHLEGEL light VICAR FOR CLERGY AND RELIGIOUS

Though the COVID 19 virus has brought unprecedented challenges to our Diocesan family, it has also brought creativity, ingenuity, and opportunity to many of our pastors and parish communities. We have rediscovered some basic ways to communicate with parishioners through phone calls and letters. We have also been stretched to discover new methods of communication, such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Facebook Live, and live-streaming, which have brought the Good News of Jesus Christ and the love of the Church to Catholics throughout greater Cleveland.

I have been privileged to hear from many people about how grateful they are for the opportunities to remain connected during these difficult times. The work of the Church continues - despite the challenges we’re experiencing.

One of our suburban parishes held a nightly family prayer time online and had hundreds of people participating in novenas, Scripture reflections, evening prayers, and time spent with family members gathered in ways they had never imagined. Another parish introduced family home blessings. The pastor and his parochial vicar visited parishioners’ homes and blessed the outside doorways, had conversations and social distancing visits. The blessings provided an opportunity to get to know parishioners better and to visit them on their ‘turf’ rather than the usual visit to the church’s ‘turf.’

Another parish community urged its families to utilize ‘sidewalk evangelization’ and requested that they write favorite Scripture passages with chalk on their neighborhood sidewalks to proclaim the ‘good news’ to their neighbors as they exercised and took walks throughout the neighborhood. Others have shared about weekly neighborhood happy hours at a designated time while waving to each other from porches and front yards while keeping safe distances.

An old proverb from 1519 once remarked, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” Perhaps these days we might say, “COVID is the impetus for ingenuity.” Thankfully the Lord can bring good and newness in any situation – even this. Thank you for supporting our parishes and Diocese during these trying times. Your support makes all the difference in the world and helps us remain connected through the bond of our faith and love. That is the ‘light’ that cannot be extinguished.
